If that’s your situation save a few to give you a 50’ or 100’ since plastic is usually available in those sizes and you only need 2 ends.

Sadly, in northern BC it is illegal in most dumps to let people recycle, you know, liablity is all about protecting us... Our dump is one of two remaining where it is legal to recycle metals etc.

Even though those are known colloquially as Quebec garages, they are not rated for snow load... (Specially with the damage yours endured.) Dozens collapse every year, and I know of at least 2 fatalities in the Gatineau... When I built mine, I started with 3 frame sets and halved the distance between, and added a ridge beam on 2 4x4 posts... Please be careful Stefan, keep the snow cleared off and do it from the outside with a pushbroom. Both fatalities I mentioned were people pushing up from inside to clear the snow... And please consider adding a ridge beam.
@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak 2 жыл бұрын
Great idea, we strengthened the damaged ones with 2x 3s and used truck straps to keep sides from spreading. We always remove snow but great suggestion to do it from outside after a big snowfall. I’ll add a couple of posts under the ridges, thanks.

I've done the same this past year in my back yard and had the exact same issue you did. The hurricanes here in Newfoundland did the job on mine and it ended up flying into my neighbours backyard. I had to rebuild it, cemented anchors in the ground and used ratchet straps to keep it down. I'm currently building my raised beds and should be all set for a nice growing season this year!

This brought back memories! My friend started a farm and asked me to help him refurbish the aviary buildings by turning them into greenhouses. We did pretty much the same things only we had a concrete flooring already laid. We still secured it with wood bottom framing and the same wiggle wire. We built wood framing on the ends though with a solid doors. I was laughing about the wind... we live in Austin, TX and getting a day without some wind is just not happening. It doesn't take much to turn it into a sailboat. It was quite an adventure! I loved watching y'all build this, and I'm sure your chickens love you for building it! You made it look much easier than I remember it.

I have been watching others on KZbin build with plastic pvc and that seems a little to week and getto to me. This is a perfect solution. I believe I will purchase 4 car shelters and build them end to end but I will use cement anchors, temporary but will last years if needed. Thanks so much, what a great idea, I also love the wiggle wire, never knew it existed.
@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak Жыл бұрын
It depends where you are. Plastic may work where there is no snow or hurricane winds at times and you want a short term, hopefully for the season structure. You can find the wiggle wire by searching for greenhouse suppliers. If you are going to buy 4 car shelters you may find it more advantageous to buy a used greenhouse.

Thank you! That's so helpful! I have a much smaller car port and you helped me see that I may actually be able to make this idea work! I look forward to seeing how you add the door. Also I am near Dallas Texas and will need to cover it with shade cloth during our 100 degree summers. That particular car port/greenhouse would mainly be used to extend my growing period through the winter. I have a second car port that I cover with only shade cloth to extend my growing period through the killer hot summer months.

Do you tape the joints to prevent them to come apart or just to make them smoother so they don't damage the plastic? If it's to prevent the pieces to come apart, maybe a metal screw could do the job better.

Good timing for us to see this video. We bought an old carport, probably the same that you have (double harnois) and we want to convert it in greenhouse next spring. Right now, chickens are in, but we only have the original carport plastic on it. We will command a greenhouse plastic at Harnois for the model of carport we have. Have you take one of there model to fit perfectly or you have buy a plastic elsewhere? Have you compare the price and the amount of work involve custom made vs homemade? tank you a lot for sharing your knowledges; it's really nice :)

Thanks for sharing and happy new growing season! Couple of questions..is there a measurement to look for when buying plastic cover to tell how much sun will come through to plants and how thick/durable it will be against weather as well? Do you have to balance the two or do they not go against each other? Also would it have not been better to use some old cable or wire or chain rather than rope for your ground tie down as won't the chickens peck it and sun rot and the water from greenhouse/decomposition and chickens winter rot it to quickly? Is it a special treated rope?
@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak 2 жыл бұрын
No just thick enough to last, chickens have so much they don’t bother pecking them. The plastics sold have ratings for % light transmission.

Hi Stefan, I'm looking to keep chickens and ducks in my gothic hoops house this winter, but I'm worried about the moisture accumulation being a problem for chickens, and about predators. Any thoughts?
@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak 11 ай бұрын
We leave a small door open all winter so the birds can go outside if they choose. It’s hard to keep a greenhouse air tight so there will be ventilation. Abundant dry bedding is important, even building it up over winter. The details I show in the video of keeping chickens in -34C are important (foil insulation, roosts above, small space of shelter in a larger space is easy for the birds to keep warm overnight, abundance of grit…

Ive always heard ventilation is extremely important for poultry. Are there vents on this greenhouse? I imagine that the breakdown of the hay, apples and manure is going to elevate co2 and possibly methane, etc. Is this a concern if there isn't good ventilation? I really enjoyed this project. One day I will do one!
@StefanSobkowiak
@StefanSobkowiak 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Left a few holes near top. For methane and ammonia the rule of thumb is to add bedding before it smells to balance carbon to nitrogen levels.
