Great work. I've been a firefighter 25 years and wouldn't have done anything different. The car was written off by the time you pulled up. I can't believe you stayed so calm. Well done.

Cheers - 25 years suggests you enjoy your job and are good at it. I think it is always good to try not to piss your whole budget up the wall over one thing in case the situation gets more serious. When I was a fair bit younger, I saw a man doing what I thought was an elaborate gymnastic routine over the top of a car in Devizes market place. He was not a gymnast but a partially sighted man crossing the road for a bus. It surprised me how many people completely, 10/10 lost their shit (and not even in a useful way). Poor chap was knocked out and clearly had a broken (45° broken) lower leg. Just knelt quietly with a knee either side of his head, said "ambulance" pretty audibly, checked pulse etc but he was already coming to and could talk. Driver squealing and snotting everywhere next to her car, still running, in the middle of the road. Someone suggesting sitting him up. Someone else keen to give him some water. One stupid woman knelt down and SQUEEZED HIS BROKEN LEG asking if it hurt... Nobody called an ambulance for at least a minute. Told him he was largely fine, asked name, what he was up to (getting bus for optician ironically) and that his leg was damaged but not bleeding. Ambulance arrived, man went away mostly fine, gave statement and left absolutely incredulous that of a marketplace full of people had so many flappers in... Do you get help or training on how not to get overwhelmed if you see something really upsetting?

My friend is a fireman I remember he said if you can pop the bonnet and if it's safe to do so. but under no Circumstances NEVER EVER lift the bonnet up of a car with an engine fire the in rush of oxygen will cause an inferno. I admire the Very calm and caring attitude by both of you to the situation the main thing the occupants were safe a car can be replaced but people can't. A situation like that people would panic so very well done.

Cheers. I do recall being told that fires flare out if you lift the bonnet so good job my chum couldn't. Always worth keeping a lid on your emotions or temper as you never know when more might be asked of you. If you've already blown your budget on something minor, you'll be useless in a crisis...

Same in buildings never open a door with a fire behind it. Called a backdraft where it will suck in all the oxygen and create a huge fireball.

Gave them some biscuits and chatted as the pug burned behind us once it was clear the thing was toast. Shortly after, the police came and the thrill of being allowed into a police car was a nice distraction.

You did everything you could. I had a similar situation a few years back I had broken down and was sitting in a layby when an 80s Mercedes pulled over further down the road with a wisp of smoke coming out of it, it caught fire, and by the time the fire brigade got the only thing that wasn't burnt was the boot lid.

Well done to both of you for stopping to help. Lifting the bonnet would have been a disaster so never attempt that. I did put a `like` on the video but of course, nobody likes to see things like this. Cheers Fred.

That's quite scary. I've changed fuel pumps and have had cars running rich because of a bad 02 sensor, which can cause a lack of power and a fuel smell (which you mention), and this sort of thing is my worst nightmare. I hate working with fuel. I also hate garages. Glad everyone is okay. I would love to know exactly what went wrong here.

Diesel isn't so bad, as that is only highly flammable under pressure in a fine spray from your injectors. Spill it on the floor, it'll never ignite. Petrol is flammable either way, especially the vapours. I guess fuel was leaking and it ignited, hence the grayish smoke from fuel spilt on hot parts..
@lukemallory7832

@@supergeekjay Indeed but why was it leaking? If I was a Peugeot owner I'd look into it.

Supposedly defective wiring is the most common cause of engine bay fires. I wonder if the mechanic who last shut the bonnet was chasing an intermittent electrical fault. Car electrics really are frightening, jebus save me from ever wiring a car
