As a 100% Irish man I can only say this is a beautiful song and beautifully performed, whatever the nationality or language and what lovely eyes the young lady has

Cara arguably has the most stunning voice to emerge from Ireland in a generation. Voices like this are so rare - England's last contender was the superlative Sandy Denny. Both and all are to be treasured. The song and the voice is all. Everything else is nonsense.

As a trad musician - I think this is a lovely rendition. This is how it should be sung - for the song - NOT the singer. Brava Cara

I arrived here after seeing an advertisement for her new record in the window of an Irish music store on Nassau Street in Dublin. Through the magic of Google Earth, the image was nearly as good as standing right there on the sidewalk. Beautiful voice for sure. Here version of "There Were Roses" is beutiful beyond words.

have to say, after listening to a lot of the other versions, cara's is still my favourite. the others seem to lose the rhythm to the song, despite their good vocals. cara keeps it simple and pure, still with amazing vocals, also saw it live and i shivered like nothing else lol

irish music means a lot to irish people wherever they live, and however they identify. my grandparents were irish but it was the irish i grew up with in england so i feel like a cultural mix. i'm not 'as english' as english friends nor am i 'as irish' as my irish family who live there. i love the music and the culture and support the irish in a historical manner, but hate just detracts from your spirit, it's been too long now, sometimes you gotta sit back and enjoy the beautiful music.

Good reply. Quite a lot of western folk music uses the mixolydian mode. For those that find it confusing, play your major scale (C in this case) but flatten the 7th note (B = B flat in this case). Gets you an instant 'folky' feel every time.

@Nemoid If you google it, you find it both ways. (kine and kind) Since cattle was a measure of wealth in some societies, lack of kine would be a lack of wealth. Also, in early societies a woman would bring a dowry to her husband consisting of money or property. If the husband-to-be was a poor man, he would be happy with anything and the father could give a little less -- or slight -- a poor man. Either way, Cara does a great job on the song.

Of all the female performers I've seen do this classic song, I love Cara's version the most. For another treat, search youtube for "Jeremy Brett - Twiggy", he sang this song on her show way back in the 70's I think. Another amazing performance, I had not known Jeremy had such a remarkable singing voice...

For those who've asked - "kine" means cow. The more cows you had the more wealthy you were - the song is stating that her father won't turn him away or stop the marriage because he doesn't have cows!

This song is a well-known tester, deceptively simple, requiring accurate pitching & tempo - you nailed it Cara. (Does anyone remember Mick jagger in the film about Ned Kelly sounding like he was vomitting all over the microphone?!?! Utterly revolting.)

According to the translation, the name of the guy is Till. lol. Not to speak of the terrible German syntax... Automatic translations are just no good. But apart from that, I love this song and am glad to hear the third verse, which is often left out. Thanks for posting this!

@GazzaMazza23 You are mistaken. She's British. The easiest way to check it this out is by asking to see her British passport. Northern Ireland forms part of the Great Britain Union. If she was Irish, she would have an Irish passport with Eire Ireland printed on its cover, like mine.
