As a new 7.5 owner, I really enjoyed this video. Oh and on the road, a 2017/2018 Civic R can't keep up... that's been tested. It's too sketchy in the turns, where the Golf holds the line nicely.

The only thing id say this car has over the competition is the refinement/interior. this is the car to get if you are in the market for an awd sport compact but dont want to make any sacrifices in daily driving livability. / automatic transmission.

lol, I'd rather have a more joyfull designed interior in a bit cheaper materials then this one. You'd have to fit DAA in a Golf just because the interior makes you doze off when you look at it. Not a single exciting curve in it. On top of that the interiors of Golf R competition are just as good, if not better: AMG A45 - just as good, a lot better looking, Audi (R)S3 - better than a Golf although also a bit boring, BMW 140i - just as good, a lot better looking.

Golf design has been the same for almost 2 decades now. They hardly change anything come a new generation and the result is that their car looks old the day it is launched. AMG A45 is 6 years old and it still looks good. Hell, a facelift on a Merc brings more change to the design then a new generation brings change on a Golf. They need a whole design department in their company just to change a headlight over the course of 5 years?

Maybe because I don't want to buy the same car after driving one for 5-6 years? Why would you conclude I have never driven one? Been driving VW's on and off from the Jetta Mk2 to the Golf Mk 5 and I have lived through the downfall of VW in terms of reliability and inventive designs. Even after 2010 I have had a test drive in VW's for a week before buying new cars so I have probably got more miles in VW's than you will get in a lifetime.

@@Iron883Man what part of the design do you say has been the same for decades??? Certainly not the engineering - and that's what counts here... VW are class leaders in terms of progression, look at the dual clutch gearboxes they have developed, they are the strongest, fastest shifting, most efficient gearbox in anything under $120,000! Then you look at the engine... In the past 20 years, their performance model has had 4 new engines, the latest being this EA888 which holds max torque from 1500rpm - 5800rpm... Not to mention a little software tune with no hardware upgrades, and you can push 280kw and 520nm reliably all day long. You can't say that the Golf platform 'has been the same for 2 decades', you have no ground to stand on...

You're talking about mechanical changes and the DSG in former generations was far from the strongest. Golf VI R's were lining up outside the dealerships because their gearbox exploded. I admit it has improved since they introduced the wet clutch, but still, it brakes down more often than DCT's from other brands. I didn't say the Golf platform has been the same for almost two decades, I said the Golf design has been the same for almost two decades. Two different things. Besides that, it wasn't VW that innovated the DSG. Every 'innovation' on a Golf has been used for at least a few years on Porsche before it became cheaper to produce and ended up in VW's.

Still prefer a GTI, a hot hatch should be FWD- more entertaining more fun more history. All these 4wd turbo hatches seem the same, just a pissing contest for normal plonker drivers ever since the WRX. Why buy this, may as well just buy an RS3 or A45 cos whatever is fastest in a straight line is the best to this crew

tizben No 4wd like Golf R, Focus RS, wrx etc tend to understeer at limit and are poor on tracks. Their adv is standing start off the line aka traffic light grand prix .The fwd GTi clubsport is faster around a track than the R, those cars are pretty much the same except 4wd v fwd. Plenty of videos around to watch.

I had m5 and m6 gtis both great cars until it rains, you are on a hill trying to take off quick and or both rain and uphill just kills the moment and gti just cant deliver all that stage 1 kws to the ground being fwd. Awd will

kjs i agree ina way ,my GTU performance model has enough power and BHP is no good if you can’t really drive ! It has dynamic chassis control and that helps get the most out of car in uk country roads
