A great comparison review. I own the new MU-X but chose the LS-U variant. I want it for towing and not 4WD as I did all the four wheel driving I ever want to do during 13 years living in PNG as a younger man. The LS-U has all the bells and whistles except for leather and electric seats (leather can get very hot in the Australian summer). The LS-U has very comfortable fabric covered seats, manually adjustable with electric back cushion control in both front seats. The LS-U has alloy wheels that are far hardier than those on the LS-T. The new MU-X has excellent safety inclusions the previous model didn’t. They promise, and I’m sure will provide, Isuzu dependability and reliability. Compared to Toyota diesels (6 month/10,000km service) Isuzu have 12 month 15,000km service intervals. That counts for me.

Greg, having 4 wheel drive when towing is for safety. Isuzu fails to offer it which is a critical oversight. Their 4x4 is only part time and only on soft surfaces so nearly useless for towing. Put 3t behind a RWD on a slippery mountain bitumen road and the caravan pushes the car around. Buy a 4x4 that has all wheel grip on bitumen if you value safety.

@@gregturner_awod I apologise if I have been misinformed. The old MUX could not drive in 4Wd on bitumen so they fixed that major downfall, thank goodness. That inability in the previous model was one of 2 reasons I didn't buy an MUX. I gave my opinion on advice from a 4x4 review on the car but cannot remember. I sincerely apologise and am so glad that Isuzu now has a 4x4 bitumen availability in the car like most of its peers.

@@gregturner_awod hi, after you told me I am wrong about the MUX I apologised to you and anybody who read my comment. Well shock horror, sorry but you are wrong not me. Whilst you can change from RWD to 4WD on the fly Isuzu says you cannot drive on a sealed surface in 4WD as it will strain the drivetrain due to not having an unlockable centre differential, even on the latest model! So either you are right and Isuzu, me and various motoring reporters are wrong or you are wrong. I retract my apology as my comment was factual. The MUX cannot drive, towing or not, on sealed surfaces in 4WD/AWD. Maybe yours is modified or something?

MUX is the loser of that group as it can't put AWD on bitumen. Delete it if you want to tow as its only a RWD station wagon on the blacktop where 95% of most people drive. Buy the Ford or Mitsubishi as they can do 4 paw bitumen. Toyota Fortuner has the stupidest 3rd row waste of space imaginable. Its like a landcruiser from the 90s with its side folding seats. Ford 5 year warranty, Mitsi 10. Comparison done.

Yes, I can confirm from my experience that it is a useful off-road and does help. However, you can't use it and the diff lock at the same time. So, you need to choose which works better in certain situations. - Sam

Worth noting that the smallest wheel you go to is 17in as the new model has larger brakes that barely fit inside a 17in wheel. Good news for the LS-T as you can add an extra 3in of rubber without changing overall diameter.

Love this comparison! I want a manual transmission, so I have to look at older vehicles anyways unfortunately. Am looking at the 2018 mux, so am glad there isn't that much of a difference for me. Only thing I'd have loved was to have the rear diff lock option, otherwise most of the other differences don't matter to me as it seems it drives just as well on and off road as the later models. I drive a 2006 Hilux at the moment, so cabin noise, comfort, and such will be an improvement one way or the other.

So disappointing. 2021 and its still got the primitive RWD only on sealed surfaces. Crossed it straight off my list as I tow a heavy van and no way do I want it pushing a 2WD tug around on slippery roads. Is this the last part time 4wd left in this segment but the latest release? You may as well buy the 4x2 because the 4wd is only usable on loose surfaces. Terrible job Isuzu, The style has gone too. Old one at least had character, new one could be an Everest at first glance. But the Everest is a proper 4wd thank goodness. Nice that it finally has active cruise that it peers have had for 3 years!

LOL Wayne your comments are hilarious. I've been researching for a ute-based SUV for a while now and on every-single-video you have commented and replied to so many whinging about 2x4 on asphalt with the MU-X because it doesnt suit your particular need of towing your caravan about. What did Isuzu do to hurt you so bad...
@waynehobbs5175
@waynehobbs5175 2 жыл бұрын
@@joshoxley3869 My facts about the ute based SUV range are simply data. Many unsuspecting buyers are unaware of the differences between the main players being MUX, Fortuner, Pajero Sport and Everest. I have nothing against any of the four but because I cross compared thoroughly before buying what best suited my family in August 2019. Since then nothing has massively changed except for the oldest of the segment, MUX being substantially changed rather than facelifts for the other three. The MUX is a capable car on and off the road but Isuzu's decision to not upgrade the 4 wheel drive system to facilitate 4 wheel drive on all surfaces means it remains behind in that safety fact. Whilst its appearance is now more generic, not unlike Everest, its new enhancements of active cruise, a rear diff lock, blind spot monitoring, forward crash mitigation are really just catching up with its peers whilst not providing anything inspiring. Its claim of 3500kg towing whilst having second lowest payload may be technically correct but tantamount to misleading. All four claim towing ability of 3000kg to 3500kg but none of them can do it with all seats occupied and baggage for the 7 added in. As I said all 4 are guilty but MUX payload of 654kg and 3500kg towing is the biggest discrepancy of data. The new MUX engine delivers the lowest specific kW/l and Nm/l whilst being the noisiest and thirstiest in the 4cyl version segment (as the ancient 5cyl in Everest is deleted in the next generation). There are buyers out there unaware of these facts and the differences in number of gearbox ratios etc. Comparing part time 4 wheel drives with full time ones is chalk and cheese.

Fun fact - Most people only care about longevity and reliability. They don't have the same lifestyle as you do. We've had our mux for 6 years now. Never gave us problems, other than the occasional, lights getting busted. Our old fortuner kept having breakdowns, only 3 years in. That's why we decided to change. We never regretted our decision in getting the isuzu. It's the most reliable vehicle we've ever had.

@@nash6323 agreed so went for the one with best warranty (10 years) and rally winning reliability. Also a proper 4wd rather than part time so of course Pajero Sport was the best buy. Won best 4x4 7 seater wagon in 2020 too. Best 4wd system. Isuzu is okay but noisy and unrefined by comparison even the newest one.

Apart from constant 4wd meaning more wear on components, higher fuel usage and larger turning circle... where exactly do they tell you you can't use 4x4 on a sealed surface? I've used 4 high thousands of times in the wet in my Dmax aswell as my patrols and many others and have for years and it has never been an issue because its for low traction situation ie. Wet roads, snow, dirt etc. Did you think Manufacturers gave you a 100kph max speed in 4H expecting you to drive on dirt? And i don't know why you'd think it wouldn't be capable offroad since the Dmax which if anything would be less capable then the MU-X having leafs instead of coil is winning so many awards. It won 4WD Action ute of the year. Enjoy your Challenger but i tested both and the Mitso was a slug and isuzu has always made a superior engine with just simple ecu remaps neting over 30% power and torque gains. And we all know which one is going to last the longest. And its a 10 year warranty IF you service it at the dealer for the entirety of the 10 years which is a blatant marketing tool which means you'll be locked into over inflated dealership servicing. The isuzu 6 year unconditional warranty is much more customer friendly
