Caral - Exploring the Sacred City of Peru

Located in the Supe River Valley, this archaeological site is often credited as the oldest civilization in the Americas. At almost 5,000 years old, Caral features several stone pyramids that date to the same time as those in Egypt. It is an excellent example of ancient urban planning, with excavations turning up evidence of trade routes spanning from the Pacific to the Amazon. This shows that Caral was a center of commerce capable of supporting a notable population due to its advancements in agriculture.
Archaeological studies began on this site in 1948 with Paul Kosok. It was archaeologist Ruth Shady who resumed research in 1994 leading to more advanced discoveries.
