You can, actually. There's the Don River Railway in Devonport, and then there's a heritage steam train ride down near Strahan and Queenstown. We've been on the Don railway many times but haven't done the Queenstown one.

How far for St. Helens or derby

St Helens is around 2 / 2.5 hours from Launceston, depending on which way you go.

You can. There's the Don 'River Railway, which we've been on many times, and there's another down near Queenstown / Strahan, which we haven't been on.
