Carbon Fiber Bike Seatpost Puller (DIY)

This guide shows you how to build a puller to remove a seized seatpost in a carbon fiber bike.
The seatpost in my Pinarello Dogma 65.1 Think 2 has been seized for over a year. When two bike shops failed to remove it I wondered if it was even possible. After reading online I came across Sheldon Brown's comprehensive seatpost removal guide (www.sheldonbrown.com/stuck-se.... This gave me the idea to build a puller, with special tips for carbon fiber frames and posts.
Thanks to Sheldon I was able to build a custom puller that successfully removed a post two different bike shops were unable to remove. Best of all, the bike and the post were unharmed in the process - the most desirable outcome.
Good luck. Seized seatposts are really hard to remove but this method worked like a dream.

This is great! Only to say that the heat cool method isn’t to contract the carbon fiber but the metal collar that it’s up against.

Hi Adam, thanks a lot for this idea - can you tell me what size boards you used, and also how the joint was fixed at the "V" ? I bought a used bike, with carbon in carbon - stuck solid.

Hey Chris, great question! I will try to upload some photos/diagrams of my puller after work tonight and will link the results. For now, some rough notes are: - I used 3/4" oak (scraps I had) for the V, about 2-3" wide and 12" long - I measured the angle of the "teardrop seatpost" shape with an angle finder ($10 or less, like this one i.e. Empire-Polycast-Protractor-Angle-Finder) - I used my miter saw to cut the angle - I affixed one side of the V to the other with 3" construction screws and wood glue (allowing this to dry so the glue wouldn't stick to the seatpost) - The joint was a butt joint, but with the glue/screws, it was strong enough - For the vertical allthread holes, I kind of eyeballed it by holding things to the bike Good luck! I wish you success with your post - they are a pain but still possible to remove.

Hey there, yeah I feel you, these seat posts are so tricky because you can't even twist them due to the teardrop shape. I might not be able to explain this super well, but here's what I tried to do: - Make a wooden V that fits around the seatpost, but rests on the receiving part of the frame - Slip a piece of allthread through the hole at the top of the seatpost - Add wood blocks to either side of the seatpost allthread - Add the final pieces of allthread - each one going through the block at the top down to the V at the bottom. - Work the bolts to push the two apart. I tried to build a wooden allthread mechanism to - push down on the frame post receiving tube - while pulling up on the seatpost istelf I will try to update my video with a drive link to a drawing I made. Great solution to the problem ! I have nice carbon Colnago with stuck aluminum seatpost , fortunately it has no hole at the top but if I know I can remove , perhaps I would drill hole in the post. What shape base ( wooden block ) would you suggest if my post is completely round shape ?thanks for your help

Hey Les, that's a really great question! I think you could get a forstner bit (or similar drill bit) of almost exactly the diameter of your seat post. If you could then cut piece out of the block so that it makes a "U-Shape" to slot around your seat post, it seems like you could get a very snug fit around the seat post to push against the seat tube with. Good luck! Perhaps you will be pioneering a new technique and video with your bike!

@@adambuilds great idea Adam , I have Di2 battery in the seatpost so need to be extra carful there. Bought this nice Colnago cross bike online fortunately owner did nothing to the bike so I and replacing bunch of very corroded parts and seatpost is one of them I am sure. My other idea is to cut from hard wood round plate to fit tight around the seatpost to get good brace there by the frame and seatpost clamp , if I cut the seatpost below the seat clamp it’s goner anyway , than I could just cut slightly bigger hole to slide down over the post. This way perhaps both plates ( top & bottom ) would be spaced out closer to the seatpost and perhaps less play side to side while cranking on the bolts. After you have mentioned drill it just came in my mid that could create collar like bottom plate to rest perfectly around the seatpost frame tube. What you think ?

@@adambuilds will do , and thanks Adam for your video I saw so many on YT but many of them I would only apply to cheap frame , perhaps steel or aluminum. With such nice bikes we have the approach will be way better w/o using chemicals , ice , heat and other liquid solutions. Will try to do it very soon I need to get my spare bike going so I have bike to ride mean time.

Anyway , thank bunch for great inspiration I was able to get my jig working , tool like 20 minutes and boom it was out and super corroded inside of the frame.
