It's cool that Eclat is pushing boundaries for BMX. I just got back into BMX after 10 years and coming from mountain biking, one of the main reason why I shifted back to BMX is to go back to a more simpler, raw and fun time without the need to spend thousands of $$$$ into top end parts just to have a good time. But I can definitely understand why someone would want these I guess. If you got the money why not I suppose!

I feel like these rims are going to be seen on lots of pro bikes, dudes like Felix are making use of the tech and pushing riding to insane levels. I feel like it's only a matter of time until the other parts companies that innovative create their own version (Gsport/Odsy, Fly, etc.). Eclat has an advantage having sister companies with composite experience. Looking at these I think you could set them up tubeless with little fuss, another little improvement high level riders could utilize. The future is here and it's sick

There’s absolutely no point running carbon rims with bmx. They’re expensive, the ride quality is poor and they’re unreliable. The same thing will happen that has already happened in mtb which is as soon as they start to shatter people will go back to alloy rims.
@owenlattin4185
@owenlattin4185 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheNotoriousMIC unreliable? Alloy hoops flat spot and bend all the time, carbon just doesn't do that, and the same hit that'll destroy a carbon hoop will destroy an alloy rim. "Ride quality" jfc dude it's a BMX bike, tire pressures are low anyways. It's a high end part for a high level rider. The use case is specific but there is justification for them. Mountain bikers aren't giving up carbon hoops either, maybe opting for alloy because of what's available right now but you're just claiming shit man 😂
@TheNotoriousMIC
@TheNotoriousMIC 2 жыл бұрын
@@owenlattin4185 that’s not true. Your correct about a carbon rim not folding or flat spotting instead they’ll just shatter or crack or rip your tyre. I’ve seen carbon rims crack or split on something that would only normally dent a regular alloy rim and you tyres and wheels are a huge factor to how your bike feels and performs. There needs to be compliance in your wheelset in order for them track and grip and just general comfort and carbon wheels don’t do that well. Say your railing a bowl your wheels a flexing giving you grip. Carbon rims won’t flex and instead will just step out or slide out because they won’t conform to the shape of the ground the same. I’m mainly a mountain biker bmx is something I do on the side there’s not much I don’t know about this subject.

Fairly certain carbon specific pads are not just used for grabbiness, but for heat dissipation. Dragging regular pads can heat the carbon to a point where it can damage / weaken it. Maybe not an issue on BMX as much as road where you drag on descents a bit more, but still worth keeping in mind.

However, I ended up trying the black Eagle ll shortly after & liked them as well. Both good.

My understanding from extensive research (i.e.watching KZbin) is that carbon fiber can be precisely engineered to do amazing things, like in auto and aerospace, but that is not always the case in the bicycle industry, Carbon is everywhere in road and mountain bikes: frames, cranks, handlebars, forks (yikes!), so hopefully there's been a lot of working out of the durability issues that are important to bikes.

@@ShadLife they’re not indestructible hence why you have to run a 300g insert and high pressures to make them useable and obviously sticking a 300g foam insert inside you wheel kills any weight saving advantages you might have gained from running carbon. Combined with the fact they have a harsh ride quality and don’t conform to the ground and you have to run higher pressure so have less grip and they’re unbelievably brittle and unreliable is why they’ve been pretty much rejected in mtb. The pro’s don’t use them because instead of the rim simply denting the rim ether shatters or cuts the side wall. Carbon rims have been and gone in mtb. They’re last decades news not the next big thing.

Tree rear cassette hub and a bsd or colony planetary coaster. Far east cycles front hub with ti internals swap the bolts on the front to 17mm hex head ti bolts vs 15mm, add some hub guards. Shadow serpent 2.3 rear tire. Tubolitos. Haven't decided on front tire yet but probably a grifter. Maxxis torch 2.2 for the skinner rear option on dirt. On street probably an alienation f1 tire in the rear pumped a little past max psi. Shadow serpent front. Custom ti axles in the rear hubs. Custom 7075 or titanium drivers. Even with the coaster by the time it's all said and done I might be sub 6 pounds on a wheelset that'll handle street.

The only thing with carbon is direct impact can lead to delamination, but in my view they make more sense for bmx than mtb since on mtb you run quite low pressure to get grip and more prone to bottom out the tire on rockstrikes. I am a mountain biker who only watched this out of curiosity. I have found a lot more reliability with carbon rims on mountain bikes than aluminum. The problem with carbon is once it cracks it splinters. With aluminum it only dents. So if you're riding hard carbon will shatter and cause serious injury, I've seen it first hand. And yes carbon does delaminate after some time. I'm an avid mountain biker and have carbon bars, bar ends, seat and seat post and they have been fine. But my frame is 7005 aluminum and it is bullet proof. Carbon is good only for road vibration in my opinion. I would never do anything hardcore on a carbon frame. I always stick to 7005 aluminum as I believe it is a far superior material.

Carbon's main downfall is direct impact. Wheels will hold up well because the tires provide a good cushion. Cranks on the other hand are never going to be carbon. Cranks get beat up too much. One thing to keep in mind with carbon is it shows no sign of stress fractures or heavy fatigue. Looks can be deceiving when identifying if parts are compromised after a big impact. Also I don't understand the confusion around carbon in this video it's not mysterious. All it is, is a carbon fiber weave immersed in resin that cures in a mold.

Everything has a fatigue point, but carbon tech has proven itself in the auto racing industry, as well as the mtb, cycling and BMX racing world. Use and longevity in the end comes down the use and user. If you're a rider that can make use out of ti spokes, chances are these hoops will be sufficient and the user just has to justify the cost/to benefit ratio. I'm excited to try them, only possible con would be braking apposed to chrome, which wouldnt a concern if there was a hub that used modern tech to improve a internal hub/drum style brake that would also have its own benefits.

I feel like Maty was perfect for yours this. Lol. But yes. CF rims are a great thing for Freestyle. If you're someone like me who doesn't do big shit mainly ledge shit, the only reason for them would be weight. But for maty, Dennis, Nyquist, it's perfect. Now my biggest question is how often do you have to true them because that's a game changer if there's no need to true. It would make me want brakes. Lol. And it's there room? Yes. Every other aspect of bikes has there different stuff. Why shouldn't freestyle?

The pad I had kept on were easily 10+yrs old, but still worked really well. I did notice the braking strip of the carbon rim having a slight color change, due to eating the pads more than I was used to. Ended up putting the other pads on, which were meant to work better with carbon & since they were black, couldn’t tell if they were also being eaten up by them. But they worked well.

I've been riding BMX for 15 years and I am also a road cyclist and I can tell you that price won't ever come down. Also I think that any dirt jump rider could ride a carbon rim. I wouldn't throw a 540 down a stairset with those. You need to use carbon specific brake pads they are not the same material otherwise you will destroy your rim overtime and it void your warranty. Now onto stronger tapered headset.

They’ll as strong if not stronger as alloy for general riding the problem you have is that they’re stiff and harsh and don’t absorb vibration as well so it’s almost like riding solid tyres and the rim doesn’t fold when you hang up on a coping or a ledge so it will ether rip the tyre as the rim instead of folding cuts through the tyre or the entire rim will shatter. What would normally be a simple job of straightening a dented alloy rim with a adjustable spanner would be buying a new tyre or rim with carbon wheels.
