im in 8th grade and fll, if i would eventually enter ftc or ftr would i expect to do things like welding carving etc. ?

Depends on the team. Some teams do welding, others manual machining, others CNC machining, some send to sponsors to do it for them, and some just use drill press and hand tools. Research your high school or community FRC team. FTC does very little stuff other than maybe hand tools.

+Rsave7Corp We seem to be doing fine so far in terms of climbing. The problem was that because we designed the climber into the intake, the capture window couldn't be much wider. The reason it couldn't be bigger was that during our prototyping, we found that capture windows larger than that caused the role to coil up to the left or right, causing a shift in the balance of the robot and potentially causing the rope to snap in some cases. Its really a safety precaution more than anything

hm, is there a specific way you line up? we did the same thing but we have like a foot of space for the rope to walk, but we use a cargo strap rated for 3000 pounds so the rope never breaks, no matter how shitty the balance is

Essentially, the drivers line up the robot manually. At Wilsonville, there was some problem with the drivers not seeing the rope due to the dark color, but that has been fixed for Lake Oswego, our next competition next week. One of the other major concerns was that as the robot tilts to the right or left, the robot would land in a very bad spot when reaching the ground due to the climber no longer receiving power. By having the robot climb straight, the risk of hitting something bad on its decent decreases dramatically. We've also upgraded the strength of our rope in order to eliminate virtually all risk of the rope snapping.

you havnt added a locking mechanism? a simple pneumatically activated gear to mesh with another gear attached to the shaft. that or put your speed controllers on brake and not coast
