We had some bad fuel on a Storm Responder generator powered by a single cylinder OHV Briggs and Stratton engine. We opted to just do a carb cleaning vs a full rebuild with gaskets, o-rings, jets and etc.

Do you have an aftermarket carb since your carb doesn't have a cut out for the O-ring that the float sits on ??

Good day Texas Patriot. I have the same carburetor installed on my Toro PowerMax 1028 OXE snow thrower. Only recently while changing my oil, I noticed that there was a lot of gas mixed with the oil from the oil reservoir. Last year, I forgot to turn off the gas supply after use so I figured that gas overflowed into the crankcase and contaminated the oil with gas. I read the the needle valve might need replacing so I did that last year. And I made a point to turn off the gas supply. This year, I opened the oil fill and noticed the smell of gas again and drained the oil which was very thin. So, I kind of knew that there was gas in the oil again. Do you know what else (needle valve) causes the gas to get mixed into the oil? What is the point of the needle valve if it does not prevent the gas from overfilling the carburetor bowl and then pouring into the crankcase (as I have read online)? I would think that you would want as little of the fuel mixing with the oil since the oil is lubricating the engine and mixing fuel with oil may cause the engine to overheat and become damaged. I now make sure the the fuel valve s turned off after use, but I fear this may happen again if I forget to turn off the fuel valve. And again, what is the purpose of the needle valve if it is not able to do it's main job? I may have to rebuild the carburetor with the Briggs and Stratton rebuild kit (part# 796137) and/or clean the carburetor again (did this previously...and I add gas stabilizer in the spring/summer). Your advice and and knowledge would be very much appreciated.

Good morning and sorry for the delayed response. If the fuel tank line outlet is above the carburetor, then there is a very real possibility that fuel is leaking past the needle and seat and overflowing the bowl of the carburetor. If this happens and the carburetor and intake are lower than the tank outlet, then theoretically fuel could overflow into the cylinder and over time leak into the crank case (as you mentioned). I would start with doing a complete carb rebuild, which would also replace the seat (the needle sits on this and creates the seal). I would also thoroughly inspect the float and make sure that it does not have a hole in it, allowing it to fill with fuel. If that’s the case, it would possibly sink, keeping the needle valve open, which could flood the system as mentioned above. You can check the integrity of the float by placing in under water or fuel to see if bubbles occur, meaning air is escaping through a hole in the float. If so, replace it. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching.

@@TexasPatriotOffRoadAndOutdoors Thanks. I will try your suggestions and tests. I inspected the float and it appears to be ok. I will try submersing it in water later. Would you know if the port in the fuel transfer tube (where the needle float valve is inserted) is supposed to have a rubber seat or or something else in it so that the needle float valve (ensuring a good seal) cuts off the flow of fuel?

@@cwsrad some seats are replaceable and made of a rubber or nylon material. Some of the cheaper carbs don’t have a replaceable seat though. If this is the case, you may can find the whole carb on Amazon for little to nothing. Also, the end of the needle is sometimes made of rubber, which can wear and cause leakage too! Good luck and I hope I’ve helped!

@@cwsrad also, you can assemble the needle and seat and using a small piece of clean fuel line, lightly blow through the fuel inlet and see if the needle and seat seal.

Hey there Texas Patriot. I rebuilt the carburetor and reinstalled it. Now it seems like the engine bogs out a bit when I try t clear some snow. It did not do this before I rebuilt the carburetor. What could the problem be now?

When rebuilding, did you mess with any of the fuel/air ratios? Some aren’t adjustable but if they are, they would need to be set back to factory settings. Check/replace the fuel filter. Make sure your fuel is fresh and there is no trash in the tank for the previous issue causing the rebuild. Check/change the spark plug. This cheap part has caused me more pain, time and trouble than I care to admit because I never consider it being the problem till the very end :(. Hope this helps!
