The old C4 was a quirky alternative to established family hatchbacks like Volkswagen's Golf; it had fun interior touches and was available in two body-styles. This new model, introduced in 2011, does away with all that in favour of practicality, comfort and style. As a result it's not the most exciting car in this segment to drive, but it's large boot and cosseting ride are merits that some drivers will find hard to overlook. The range of engines is good and the C4 is the first to get Citroen's e-HDi micro-hybrid system which offers impressive performance and low emissions. There's also a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine at the top of the range that offers the best acceleration.

I've just bought one of these today 64 plate, and have to say the 2 hour drive back was absolutely fine. Yes its a little floaty on the motorway, but it's so comfortable and easy to drive. I like it already.

i have a c4 e-hdi exclusive, been driving it for about a year. i don't agree with Matt's opinion about the car's looks, it is one of the best looking hatchbacks out there. built quality, interior design is great. it has a great quality/price ratio. it is a good cruiser. It has light but effective breaks. (It is kinda important for me, have a problem with my right knee, i hate heavy and nonreactive breaks like those in mercedes-benz cars - i mean the ones you really have to push into before the breaks actually hold on ) Things that i don't like about the car: 1. Suspension is quite stiff, no problem if you generally travel on smooth asphalt. Not a huge problem. it gets worse if you have 17 inch alloy wheels. 2. Semi-automatic transmission is terrible. gear changes are damn slow and not accurate, generally gives hesitant wrong decisions. i live in a crowded city so i had to buy the automatic transmission. you may go for the manual if traffic is not a problem in your area. 3. Steering is a bit heavy. 4. the side mirrors make a stupid whistling sound in certain wind conditions. If you are planning to buy this car definitely go for the diesel.

It's kind of annoying that he compares every hatchback with the Ford Focus. It seems in Britain the Focus sets the benchmarks for every other car. I personally dont like the looks of the Focus (no matter which generation). And they usually have poor refinement. They might be sporty to drive, but carbuyer thinks that everyone wants to feel like a Formula 1 pilot. That's not the case. As far as I'm concerned, I look for comfort and safety in a car (...reliability, practibality etc goes without saying). With regards to comfort, design and workmanship the Citroen C4 seems to be just fine.

just rented one, asked for a Focus but got one of these, nice finish, quiet, but the suspension a bit floaty, they seem to rock a bit sideways too, steering on the Focus has more feel, but quality wise the C4 is top.... maybe better than the Ford.

Unfortunately We bought a C4 HDI 1.9 , 4 years ago. My wife liked it mostly for the mileage, 43 per gallon on motorway, as long as you stick to cruise speed "60mpg" . We travelled 500 miles on a 60 litre tank which is pretty good. The good points? ; Good mileage, pretty zippy for a small car. the speedometer is on the upper dash where it's easier to see along with other info stuff. That's it! The bad points ; the suspension is terrible, springs are horrendous , the doors have a habit of closing on the back when you are busy trying to retrieve something from the back seat., the bulbs constantly blow, the tail lights are simple to change but the headlamps are terrible to get the fingers into. the seatbelts jam tight when trying to lean forward to look left and right, I'm well aware many others will disagree with me but we all have our views and this is mine.

I own a citroen c4 manual 1.6 liter desel and i love that car, shes fast beautiful and quiet The only bad thing i had so far is my dpf needs cleaning and the car is a little slow when starting to drive after a full stop first gear and second are slow but after that the car acclerates very fast. If youre looking for a nice car this is it.

Indeed. It`s the same story with Mondeo or Fiesta. I mean c`mon I like to drive or be driven fast and sporty BUT!!! For the most part I like comfort because for the most part one drives normally and doesen`t need to have high performance suspension. Years ago we had Citroen BX (Hydropneumatic suspension) and it was I dare say it way more comfotable than this C4 and when we wanted to drive fast we could do so without any problem. What do you want with a car? Not every car has to be a Ferrari!

you're so wrong. each car has very different dynamics and characteristics. Fun to drive means that the suspension setup is well balanced, the steering is direct,responsive and provides good feedback, the brakes are strong, the visibility is good, the seats provide good support and are comfortable, the interior is well desigen and practical, there's not much noise and many more things.

No I am also about 6ft4 but had no problem? Mine was a petrol version and I didn't use the cruise control don't like it lol Had a Peugeot 206 in Australia, being rhd rive, they don't change the floor for export, so the pedals (with less space) were so close together, it was easy to have an accident. I have a new Fiesta at home now ( being basically a Ford fan) and had no problem with either of them?

i bought standard 2014 1.6 diesel 6 months ago with perrys offer for £9.999. i was happy all the way till i had an accident, now my gap insurance pays me £17.000 so i can replace it with a new one. lucky me. couple of things i don't like, is that because of downhill automatic break the clutch makes little noise when pressed, and the gearbox does not go into first gear some times you have to neutral it and try again, (once every 2 months maybe) and the wipers looks like suitable for left side driving rather than right, because the last wiper leaves line of rain just infront of you. seems like it is not filtering the smell or gas in the traffic enough as well. but over all it does fricking 600 miles on A1 motorway for a full tank which works out about 1 litre of diesel for 12 miles.

600 miles = 960kms... i get 1300 - 1600kms out of my 2013 1.6L e-,hdi auto. 807miles minimum 993miles maximum. i wonder why the difference?

wrong -i own a 7 year old b6 2.0tdi for the last 5 years... the engine is fantastic, very reliable car apart from some small electrical glitches/ nothing significant - 7 years and only 2 suspension bushings had to be replaced, the only engines that are "doomed" are the one's with siemens piezo injectors (the injectors tend to die, but imho drive nicer) but if you live in uk it's not a issue at all since they replace them for free nowadays so you get a even better deal getting one of these now...

@doluss yes i know, vw these days are faulty. I heard the current Citro C5 is a nice car, and i drove one. French Passat i say...and it's quite individualist. Mondeo, yes expensive to repair. Opel Insignia is good but expensive, Passat 2007 is not reliable. Merc or BMW expensive to run, Peugeot is the biggest shit, Laguna no way, so i think i should chose Audi A4 facelift model 2005-2008 1.9 tdi 116 hp. These cars are reliable being based on the previous model. I don't like the limited space...

It seems that a lot of Car reviewers like these seems to like comparing cars to the Ford Focus, I can’t stand that Car, I drove one a few years ago, the inside felt gloomy and cramped, yeah the dash is somewhat interesting, and I hate that turtle shell shape of the hatchback, much preferred the Escort before it.

@@ridoyfaruk well, my C4 was a diesel 1.6 HDI. Had the car for 5 years. Loved that car. Wasnt very fast, but it was very stable, and my fuel consuption was around 5.2 l / 100km. I had one problem, at the 5th year. The car suddenly stopped running during a highway. It turned out it had a malfunction in the injectors body. The replacement was around 2500€. But Citroen checked my maintenance records, and it told me i did everything by the book. In the end, i didnt pay for the replacement part, tottally free. Let me tell you, Citroen has the best costumer service compared to any other car manufacter! A few months later, i decided to get the DS4, and its even better than the C4, at least, in my opinion... I hope it helped

A golf also drives great, but when you on a winding road the focus is just better. For the rest is a golf better build and that's the reason every journalist prefer the golf. @doluss hahaah so do I. A 2003 VW PASSAT Sedan 1.9 tdi 130 hp. But i am thinking to sell it and to put some bucks to buy a Skoda Octavia 2, 1.9 tdi 105 hp from 2007-2008...Sorry but i can't afford a Passat from the same age and i heard that this B6 are not reliable at all. On the other side, O2 is quite cheap, reliable and cheap to run and insure. WHAT DO YOU SAY? Regarding your question, here is my answer: NO. Even if we like Citro, take my advice and stick to German cars. Cheers:)

Last year, 2012, I test drove the Citreon C4 automatic 1.4L, as I had driven the previous model from 2006-2009. As ever the C4 is very comfortable, the boot is huge. However, the build quality is plasticky and a little cheap (no change there then) and its certainly no VW, it wallows and floats around bends like a rollercoaster with no sense of direction, the auto gearbox epitomises 'jerky' (worse than the previous model). Engine is too small for this 'hippo on wheels'. Rating 6.5/10

Potholes !? Citroens were wafting over potholes without noticing them 60 years ago. Citroen used to have the best suspension tech on the planet, Xantia Activa , XM,SM,CX,DS etc. Why have they lost the plot ??

@@markp8295 I have been driving it for 8 years. My car is over 100.000 kms. It has not cost me anything except the routine yearly maintenance. Only once the sd card in the navigation system broke, it gave me a little bit problem. I managed to change the sd card myself but i had to find a shop that could remap the control buttons. Even the citroen service had problem doing that. C4 is a reliable car, just keep away from volkswagens.

also rented one of these while in uk recently - there was alot to like.. especially the ultra-quiet diesel engine BUT - i felt like im going to need a knee operation.. i literally couldnt drive it until i could switch on cruise control (annoyingly available only from 4th gear), i'm 6'4 and seat max to the back and down - steering wheel front and up and still couldnt get my leg under the steering wheel properly..huge pedal offset, absolutely pathetic... i can trust only germans with these things,
