To Replace A Car Battery Mercedes-Benz C-Class C250 (W204) Mercedes uses the Varta battery. But the Varta battery is priced in the stratosphere, $350, not including the labor to install this overpriced Varta Battery. With stores selling car batteries for a Mercedes W204, like Costco, Sam's Club, Optima, none of them sell a Mercedes C250 battery. You either pay the Mercedes dealer $350 for a new Varta battery, or pay Autozone $189 for an equivalent Mercedes battery replacement.

Which battery cable should be removed first?
A 13 mm socket is used on the battery bracket on a Mercedes W204. For the battery replacement, the Mercedes W204 battery terminals require a 10 mm socket wrench. You need to remove the black (ground) battery cable first, so it will open the circuit gracefully. With a metal wrench in your hand, you don't want to loosen the positive car battery post first, and risk your wrench slipping onto the ground post, making connection, a huge spark, or worse case, the battery explodes.
Removing a car battery
When removing a car battery, you'll likely need a ratchet, and we recommend a 12" extension to reach bolts on brackets on some car batteries where they are screwed down at the bottom of the battery to hold it into place.
How to reconnect a car battery
Next, reverse all the steps you used to remove the old battery, connect the ground cable first however, then connect the positive cable, then re-attach any car battery mounting brackets. That is how you how to replace car batteries.

I stripped one of the size 13 bolts. Real tight working space to work in the latch and bolts, with the battery in the bay. The way I did it much easier on the second run: left the battery out, latch plus loose bolts in, work the battery in and under the loose latch, tighten the size 13 bolts. Very useful video! It also helps to make sure you are using six point sockets, as the cheaper 12 point sockets are going to have the negative effect of rounding off the hex shaped nuts and bolts and that's what strips them

I went to Home Depot twice to get the right socket extender as first one with the impact driver did nothing for the front 13 bolt. It was nested so deep and the service person must've overtightned that I had to use a manual socket with extender (2nd trip) to pry it loose after a couple wd40 sprays. Design flaw or do they just want you to take it to the dealership for a 'simple' battery swap?

Thanks for showing so much detail. The C250 has more than 100 different computers in it, so it is important to take your time and do it right. Another post mentioned using a H7 size battery rather than H6. I tried this and it is a perfect fit. USE THE H7 SIZE BATTERY and eliminate the side space.

The correct battery for the C250 (W204) is actually the L4/94r/H7 agm battery. This Group Size EXACTLY matches the original battery dimensions and specs. After several hours of frustration with store websites claiming their H6 or other battery is an OEM replacement, I have found that the L4/94r/H7 AGM is the correct fit, as well as Cold Crank Amp spec rating. Champion AGM $167 at PepBoys 48 month free replacement. I understand that Johnson Controls is the manufacturer of both Bosch and Champion AGM batteries. Part Number H7-850CHAGM

@@carbuying Hi. I live in South Africa. The local Mercedes price was ZAR5,370.oo which is approximately US$384.oo. I bought a Korean battery equivalent (type "Atlas": 80 AmpHr, 800 Amp cranking capacity) for about the equivalent of US$115.oo. I don't know how good this make is as I've never used it before but there was a two year guarantee on the product. My previous Mercedes battery was Varta (made in Germany). I got seven years out of it (and it is still useful for a back-up for my house security system). We do have an AutoZone in South Africa. Their price was about the equivalent of US$150 for a locally manufactured battery of unrecognised brand. Generally speaking South African manufactured batteries last about four years.

nicley presented . 2 comments here though. the fitter of said battery commented on battery being a different size to original. that's because a non standard different make was fitted rather than the merc part/original. secondly, no mention was made re the consumer battery in the boot ( trunk) it would be nice to know whether the new consumer battery has to be registered/programmed to the actual car. Some cars do, like vw golfs/BMW models ! do these c204/5 models require this ? however very nicley described to get job done ! thank you

As far as we know the auxiliary battery in the trunk is a simple motorcycle type battery that doe snot need to be registered. We have a video on that.

I just replaced my battery on a 2012 C250. I find it interesting the battery clamp on my car is a single bolt and further in. Whereas in your car, the battery clamp is two bolts and further out. I noticed there are two additional bolt holes in my chassis for the two bolt battery clamp. So it seems like if there is a single bolt clamp, an H6 is a perfect fit, as it is further in. But if there is a two bolt clamp, an H7 would be a better fit, as the clamp is further out.

Good tutorial, thank you! But I did not hear anything about announcing the battery change to the onboard electronics. Afaik the C-Class remembers what goes in and out your battery, so you have to reset the loading history and initialize the intelligent loading. Or am I wrong?

@AJ S Some people have waited a day or two and it comes back on its own. You can also try to reset the COMAND system by holding down that center button for about 10 seconds and let it reset itself and see if that helps. Also try to see if you have volume coming out of the regular volume knob instead of the steering wheel controls. Another thing to try is the volume on your Bluetooth device is it actually turned up enough to give the radio a signal level that you could hear? Other things people have tried would be to locate the fuses for your car in the owners manual anything related to audio and check them out go in and physically pull them out of their slot and inspect them make sure they're OK and put them back in and if you have an ohmmeter I would even recommend ohming them out to make sure they are close to 0 ohms. If these don't work and it's time to take it to the dealer

as seen in the video, 1.most mercedes/audi/golf/Bmw etc.. come with varta battery fitted, as we fit varta batteries in these cars on daily basis, you do not need to have a jump pack neither any back up power , in fact if u connect any other you are more likely to cause a fuse to be blown.we have tried this over and over, but failed after consulting varta supplier they also advise not to do so(use back up power).

You will get a small spark that stops once the connection is made, that is normal, it is the inrush of voltage and current into the car system that occurs when yo connect a battery.

The only one that works if you have a Mercedes Varta battery would be one from the Mercedes dealer parts department. It's difficult even finding the battery for the car outside of Mercedes, most of the sites when we looked for a new Mercedes E350 battery did not even have a battery for it.

Yes it was only there a few seconds, and keep in mind the positive terminal was capped with the red plastic until a couple of seconds before we grabbed the ratchet, so there was never any danger of it shorting the 2 terminals, and certainly not from that angle.

Yes you can do it this way. That is the way most people do it even though the experts prefer that you find a shiny spot of metal to use as the ground, because the sparking that it makes when you connect the cables could cause a really bad battery to explode. I have never seen a battery explode in 30 years of jump starting cars, but it does happen.

The only issue we saw is we had to re-program the clock, but it remembered all our seat settings and radio stations. You should check with your Mercedes repair shop for confirmation, and it would not hurt to get a memory saver to hookup to your car's OBD2 port if you are concerned.

We do this with a Memory Saver device, costs about $15, and it plugs into the OBD2 port of your car, underneath the driver's side dashboard. You then have to supply 12 to the memory keeper with another battery, or a cigarette lighter adapter connected to a second car.

2008 w204 - I used a booster pack via the obd port and took out an old standard wet flooded battery and put in a new H7 AGM from Costco. -- Upon reconnecting the last of the two battery leads, the negative, there was some minor sparking which must have caused some damage because the shift lever got stuck in Park and I needed to override manually. You did not mention anything about letting the car go to sleep like they say when testing for a parasitic power drain .. I'm still looking for reasons why my systems got fried on such a simple procedure when I was being very careful to use the correct procedures except I did not first let the car's power systems go to sleep. Not sure if that would have made a difference. Also, the new AGM battery won't fully charge and keeps failing a battery goodness test. I'll get an AGM charger. -- I am annoyed that nobody tells you that AGM's don't charge like flooded's. --- Everything works as expected except for the shift lever being stuck in Park and the light for the "P" in the park position remaining dark. -- My car's obd port also got compromised by my battery change procedure. The blueTooth dongle from Carly won't show its light anymore when I press the button on it which makes me worried I won't be able to scan for errors. I tested the Fuse for the obd which happens to also be for the ATM and presumably for the light that indicates the current shift position. I was hoping that the fuse would be bad since the obd looks compromised and that would explain why the shift lever position light is off, But the fuse shows the same voltage as the battery at the time of testing. So the fuse seems good. My next steps are to get an AGM charger, then drive the car in LimpMode to my underground garage's entrance and attempt a scan procedure.

Honestly I'm against the idea of sanding the negative jump start pole as it makes it oxidize faster by increasing the surface area. It's better to use some low concentration HCl to remove the oxidation and then apply some corrosion inhibitor to slow down the corrosion.

BIG mistake to ever leave your spanners on the top of the battery. Too easy for them to slide onto the positive post. BIG mistake, You can do all sorts of damage and get a real surprise into the bargain.

Lots of problems with this video. There are better ones on this subject. 1. Calling the the battery hold-down stupid WHEN YOU USED THE WRONG SIZE BATTERY. You should have used an H7, not an H6. AutoZone, Advance, NAPA and others do list & sell an H7 for this car. 2. One should maintain 12V on the system when disconnecting the battery. Considerable latent damage (damage that won't show up immediately) to the car's electronics can otherwise occur. Just checking the seat memory function doesn't test the engine control computers, the traction & anti-lock brake systems, etc. 3. One should use a wire brush or very fine sandpaper on the ground jumper contact and apply a thin film of dielectric grease to keep it clean. Just roughing up the surface with sandpaper as shown in this video will encourage faster corrosion. 4. Calling the manufacturer of the battery stupid when you don't know what it takes to put the date of manufacture on a standardized label was quite unnecessary - and installation date is more importance.

You should slide the battery to the left side, under fixed bracket.. the right bracket is tapered so it can both press down and to the left, under the fixed left bracket.. a hint.. don't speak so often about "stupid" so freely.

No mechanic will put wrench or ratchet on top of battery because risk of electrical short and battery explosion. You also didn't show new battery being locked in position. Please don't use term "socket wrench" while using ratchet.

My thought exactly. That ratchet would have easily reached both battery posts and Blam! A 3/8" Craftman ratchet makes a lousy fuse.

Hello my friend, the battery you used as repacement is not the same thechnology as the original one, the original uses VRLA (valvule regulated) the replacement doesn´t.

Jose, you are incorrect, the battery placed in the car is indeed a VRLA and is approved for this car, and in fact we plugged the safety vent hose into it, just like on the original VARTA battery that we removed. Maintenance-free, leak-proof, position insensitive. Batteries of this kind have a safety vent to release gas in case of excessive internal pressure build up. Even the Autozone lookup for this battery says it is compatible. They would not say it is compatible if it were not true.

@@carbuying you're right new replacement is stamped as being an AGM and looks like a GREAT SWAP... how much was it? OEM want to sell their parts only hence the stupid battery tie down ! Early Batt failure are courtesy of bad "Battery Sensor" 5hat command low voltage abuse below 11.9V... see "workshop menu" display.

w204 c200 cgi bj2011 / batteriesensor brauch man nicht abklemmen / heute gemacht genau wie im Bordbuch beschrieben erst minus ab dann plus.ausbauen wieder einbauen. fertig. /..keine Einstellungen nötig gewesen danach . Uhr hat sich nach 10 min fahren selbst gestellt..

There is no way in the rest if my life for me to buy a luxury car, I am sticking to simple design from toyota. I got the c250 and I hate that car with all my heart, not only Mercedez but any other stupid luxury vehicle with stupid designs

The problem with the C-250 is it doesn't seem to get all of the better design innovations that we find in the E Class so I think if you find yourself in a used E Class you would be much happier

The red caps are plastic insulators that protect the posts, and prevent shorting them to any metal objects.
