I knew that you had training when I saw how you kicked the door in. One foot on the ground and putting your whole bodyweight into the kick. This guy in sharktank just jumped the door like an idiot and lost his stable point on the ground when he jumped and left the ground with both feet. This is the reason he lost all the power. A normal person could kick open a door after watching a few KZbin videos (but that doesn't mean that he/she is trained how to deliver kicks the right way. I saw even police officers who struggled to kick a door open. Maybe the door was better built than the usual one, or maybe they just didn't train how to deliver a kick and where to hit the door to open it. P.S.: I really like your work and hope that I'll see much more of it in the coming years. Sorry for my English, I'm from Germany and not a native speaker.

After our house was broken into in 2018, we’ve put in tons of security. There’s a kick plate at the bottom of the front door, and the doors are solid oak. Even if the glass panels in the door are smashed most people wouldn’t be able to make it through. The next vulnerable spots would be the side or back door since both are made of glass. To help with that, there’s glass break sensors at every window and door and cameras all over the property.

Burglaries are generally a larger concern in many European countries than in the US. While the total numbers may suggest that the US is ahead of or at least equal in burglaries, the reality is that crime in the US is highly concentrated in specific areas and broadly speaking, those are low income areas. The average middle-class home is generally unlikely to be burglarized in the US. Sure, it happens. But it isn't the top of mind concern for most Americans when thinking about risk of crime. One of the most important factors is density. The US just isn't anywhere as dense except for a few cities. People pulling into a driveway in the suburbs stand out in a way that someone walking into a 30 story building doesn't. I love European doors, door hardware and locks. But in the US, above a certain point, money is better spent on other security features, such as alarms and cameras. My front door is protected by a very heavy, multi-layer glass and laminate door with three locking points storm door. But, I have 5 other doors that would provide access to my house and it isn't practical to to protect all of them in a similar manner.

04:58 Most deadbolts take seconds to pick but thats not the point. There is no such thing as a secure lock. The point of a lock is to keep honest people honest. A thief is not going to go through the trouble to pick a lock when there are faster ways to get in. Every moment they are in front of that door, they are exposed to prying eyes. You need layers of security such as cameras, a monitored security system, exterior lights, landscaping that doesn't give people places to hide, and finally having good locks, doors, and windows, properly secured. You don't have to be fort knox, you just don't want to be an easy target so that a thief will go elsewhere. One of the most common types of break ins is the 'smash and grab'. Don't keep valuables near windows where a thief doesn't even have to enter the house.

Most locks do not take seconds to pick. The B60 has been picked by lockpicking lawyer took 50 seconds and he is one of the best out there. Most people are going to take WAY longer. But yes, layers of security are super important. I learned about the onion concept, if you have valuables or even to create a faux saferoom is that you should add sturdy door and a good deadbolt to your bedroom / office. If you're paranoid add a lock to your closet door. All your points are valid, get a good monitored security system, landscaping that doesn't give places to hide. Secure all your other entryways. If you do a fraction of that, most thieves will go elsewhere unless you're targeted.

@@Lam I have been picking locks for 20 years. Even raking, it takes seconds to open most DEADBOLTS. Note a deadbolt is not every worlds hardest lock your example is thinking of. It's a 5 to 6 pin lock with a few security pins. And raking is slow compared to rattle tools. But you're really splitting hairs in your argument and you're not even arguing the same thing I am. I said deadbolts are easy to pick, and you're talking about high security locks which are NOT deadbolts you would find in most houses. But the whole argument is moot because as I said, a thief is not going to go through the trouble to pick your lock. And any lock is not going to stop a determined criminal. You can put the worlds most secure lock on a door, and they can attack the lock physically. If you reinforce the lock, they can attack the door. If you reinforce the door they can attack the frame. If you reinforce the frame they can go through a window, or another door, or the wall, or the ceiling.

Love this channel and these deep dives! We sometimes forget that most day-to-day crime is spontaneous & opportunistic, and often committed by desperate people; some of the best ways of preventing local crime is by removing the immediate opportunities and engaging with community support programmes. Some people don't discuss these topics because they worry it will inspire more crime, but imo the opposite is true by spreading knowledge of the existence of common preventatives to both the victims and criminals alike.

Have a friend whose father had a glass company years ago. They were servicing a shop that had been broken into several times before. First break in they replaced the window in the door with tempered glass, that did not keep out their thief. The second time after the break in they replaced the glass panel with a laminated glass with a laminated security glass that had one layer with wired glass. No luck, the thief broke in again after multiple strikes with several concrete blocks. Yes there was a new camera installed that was pointed to the window but hidden from plain view. Well the final replacement panel was made from 1/2 inch Lexan polycarbonate material. Well they found the burglar outside the shop the next morning dead as a door nail on the ground with his skull shattered open. The video showed the unfortunate thief hurl a solid concrete block full force and after bouncing off of the Lexan panel it smashed back into the thief’s head killing him. Funny burglaries dropped to nil in the area where the shop was located.😊😊😊😊

ANSI sets standards of dimensioning, hole prep, and minimums for cycle testing., etc. Lock manufacturers have found it is cheaper to lawyer their way to a rating, than to engineer to one.... so many grade 2 locks are packed as grade 1, and 3 as 2... it is all in clever wording. But there ARE a few good Grade 1 deadbolts, that are available from locksmiths nationwide. I recommend Assa 7000 or Medeco Maxum. You get pick and drill resistance to a UL security standard on the cylinder. That makes either one a Ansi Grade 1 X UL437. A good Grade 1 deadbolt with standard keys, is a Schlage Industrial B660X12-630/631. IT is almost as good as the High Security Assa and Medeco models. A very good electronic deadbolt lock is the Emtek Empowered series. Albeit expensive, they are SO MUCH BETTER than the rest. Found at quality locksmith shops nationwide.

Security doors are quite common in my part of the world. You will not get thru the door itself without firefighter/swat/military grade equipment and when the door is closed it has bolts going into the frame (which is made of steel) from all directions. You are simply not getting in by human force. Also our locks are way better than the garbage you can get at home depot / walmart but they can still be picked by a professional. Lesser locks can be "bumped" in a matter of seconds. So have a way to secure the door from the inside that is independent of the lock (or "jam" the locking mechanism in the locked position). Windows are a weakspot, but they can be switched out for better ones. A good alarmsystem with motion detectors and cameras that sees the "bad guy" before he even gets to the door is also a must have. Apart from that, a big dog and a gun are more or less self explanatory and a must have.

For our front door, our deadbolt is set up high (just above eye level) and both it and the door latch have 3 inch screws anchoring to the actual frame. This spreads the force so the kick effort is much harder. There's also a stainless plate around the door knob because someone unsuccessfully tried to crowbar their way in. Pretty sure they didn't try the windows because the back ones have a cage around them to keep the cats in and the other ones are in direct view of the road.

It’s not just the loss of property and personal valuables that is the concern. Once you’ve experienced a break in, you often will never recover the sense of insecurity you feel even after implementing some of the suggestions. My mother had a break in a number of years ago. But despite improving her locks and windows for her, she never felt completely comfortable in her own home after that. 😢

He went to the next doctor toet those cs fixed and was escorted out by the police afterwards. The fourth one manged to get inside an stole a few recipe formulars, and filled in his medication and forged the signature. He went straight to the nearest pharmacy, who knew how the signature normally looks. Afterwards he was escorted out by the police. Tldr. most people who break in are just stupid, or under the influence of drugs.

For the screw test, I wonder how it would fair with higher quality screws, or ones specifically designed to prevent shearing, since screws are prone to doing that. Nails would do a much better job of avoiding shearing. You say the entire lock area was destroyed, but I only see the screws as the point of failure. The wood on the deeper side was not broken, and my guess is that the inner frame broke only after, and because, the screws failed.

You can't stop a break in, you can only delay it. Sure you can install good doors, locks, bars over windows, ect. However all your doing is putting a bank vault door on a wet paper bag. You have to build a house from the ground up with security in mind to make any big difference. Also the best you can do with any structure is buy time, even a nuclear missile silo or a bank vault can be broken into given enough time. Even building a house like a missile silo with 30 ft thick concrete walls with a ton per CY of 6 in thick rebar, 50 ton blast doors, ect won't stop a break-in only delay it. However it certainly will protect you in the event of a nuclear strike! Hiring 24/7 onsite security is the thing to do if you have stuff worth stealing. For the rest of us the best thing you can do is install a security system with cameras and offsite recording with a cellular or radio backup link so simply cutting the phone lines won't be enough. Cellular and radio jamming equipment would be needed. A security system that works of a continuous signal the way to go, these systems don't send an alarm signal but rather will alarm if the signal is lost.

Find a good local alarm installation firm, and ASK if they do supervised systems

Wondering if the orientation of the grain on the lumber makes any meaningful difference in absorbing the energy from kicks or the shearing of the screws in the door frame e.g. at 13:35

I have the Medeco deadbolts. Got them from a locksmith. Obviously that's not goingo to help with kicking the door down. The wooden frame is garbage. Oh and once time I got locked out on the deck with no way to get down and ended up smashing the double pane window. More difficult to smash it than I would have thought but all the glass fell cleanly onto the floor enough to where I could get back inside without injury.

That is why I install passage function handles, with deadbolts above... locking LATCHES are not adequate for security, only traffic control. Author did not miss it, because it is irrelevant to the issue of deadbolts. Get em, reinforce em, use em!

do genuine wonder at what point does local housing just turned into fortresses here than in the west, we're talking barred windows, door with bar gate and double locks AND a padlock AND steel door and window frame with all 4'-6" walls, it's like proper 3rd world here and yet all homes are build like these, it's not that we never do wooden houses we used to

I don't know the official reason other than "that is what the code requires". But a couple of guesses: (1) to prevent someone (or even snow) from blocking you in. (2) if you are in an apartment, doors opening into a hall out could hit someone.

"Schlag" is the German word for hit, or blow. Given it's use in this context and the typical over-engineering that comes with German products, I'm not surprised it stood up to your hitting test 🙂

Here in italy, those are pretty much interior grade doors. Outside doors here have steel frames, a half dozen deadbolts and weigh someting like 150 Kg..(330 freedom units) good luck kicking one of those down 😂

Stick in inside track, a sliding pin lock at the TOP EDGE of the active door, and a waist height charley bar.... quite effective, and since this is the internet, the most important feature CHEAP..... These measures cost next to zero.

That's a fair comment! I think it's all about what the thief expects and throwing obstacles in their way. Most don't expect a film, most are using a center punch or a rock and expect the glass to shatter and break on the first go. Hammering a lock, they expect it to go in 10 blows so if they aren't getting through they might go elsewhere.
@loneIyboy15
@loneIyboy15 2 ай бұрын
@@Lam Still, they can see the glass cracking. Dumb as they may be, I think all but the dumbest criminal will think "grug hit glass harder an break". And since the glass doesn't now shatter spectacularly, there isn't that loud crash sound until total failure- more of a series of relatively-quieter thuds. I mean, you heard it in the video: Lots of thuds, and only tiny bits of glass falling, for the most part. And all this is just assuming they don't do something dumb like try chipping away at the now-clearly-broken window and find the film.
@georgehill3087
@georgehill3087 2 ай бұрын
You can easily walk in with a broken door, you can't exactly easily climb in with a half broken window. Chipping away the broken glass shards and climbing in takes significant amount of time.
@loneIyboy15
@loneIyboy15 2 ай бұрын
@@georgehill3087 I feel like once you're throwing rocks through windows, you've committed to climbing in through the window. And the "Security" thing gives you, like, 10 chances to pre-pulverize the glass. It looks like you just get to combine the whole "breaking the glass" bit and the "Clear our the rest of the window" into one simple rock throwing task.

Wow, you've not really updated your door security since the 80s! I live in the UK now and the ordinary, bog standard UPVC door comes with 3 points locks. They take even the police with their battering ram several minutes and a dozen whacks to get in.

We have those here...... the failure rate is rather high, and the installation has to be most perfect to have ANY chance of working smoothly. Square, Plumb, Level AND True. We should want that for our home, anyway. But it is essential for multipoint hardware to last even 10 years. I service these ALL THE TIME.

Before even watching till the end or reading any comments: it is hilarious how weak US "security" usually is. Cardboard houses, windows everywhere, paper doors with locks intended for your bathroom in more dangerous parts of the world. I only feel safe in reinforced concrete apartment on the 10+ floor with 5 inch thick steel-concrete door, ha-ha.
