Cardboard Platform Bed for Jeep Wrangler

This platform bed is easy to make and use. The bed is comfortable and long enough to fit my 6'2" height. It is nothing more than cardboard on top of four plastic storage boxes.
Storage items are easily obtained by sliding out any one of the boxes. The other three boxes hold the bed. I demonstrate how to remove a box, one handed -- with my other hand holding the camera.

Great idea! I keep the cardboard from refrigerator boxes to use as an improvised creeper. It is easy to slide on to get under the car and easier on the knees than the concrete of the carport. Consider this if you breakdown on the road. I really like the boxes as the platform. I built a plywood platform over the wheel wells of my camping van and put lids on with hinges. The problem is having to remove our bedding to open them. Removing the platform and replacing with this method would reduce overall weight as well.

Great to see you're out and having fun Ken. For me, the only downside would be that you have to remove or shift boxes / cardboard to get to your things. I'd place all my gear on one side and my bed on the other side :-) Take care. Sandor

I do something similar with my old TJ. I put the passenger seat forward at an angle and then use a bit of plywood as my bed. I'm 6'3 and it just barely lets me lay out flat, but its nice when camping in grizzly country or in winter.

I have a 2 door jeep (jl) so a similar system in my jeep might be a bit cramped but as I am only a medium sized lady I think I could make it work.

I like this design because it prevents a big problem that many other bed designs have - they place a sheet of plywood in the back of the vehicle, unsecured. In a wreck, the sheet will come flying forward, with very dangerous outcomes to the back of your head. A sheet of cardboard is much better. The storage boxes also need secured - maybe a strap to hold them in place? At any rate, they are large and will probably not fit between the roof and the seat in a wreck.
