I toured with them in the 90s and I remember during a soundcheck talking to Bob about how he kept time with all that madness. He handed me his headphones so I could hear his monitor mix. the music was really quiet and there was just this incredibly loud clicktrack that allowed him to play in time to all that glorious mentalness

That's really interesting to hear.

+John Steels Specifically to make sure that he was in time with the backing track that the keyboards were on.

Did you tour with them as musician in another (support or lead within that tour) band or as their technician?

I've played drums in a band that had some pre-sequenced stuff and a really loud click track is essential. Mine was like a cowbell with an extra loud and higher pitched "donk" on the "one". Sometimes it felt a bit like brain damage but without it you have no chance at all. Playing the drums is like being in your own world of noise with other stuff poking through.

It was probably also a necessity as there was a backing track with the keys. Back in the 90s I remember there was a local goth band that used to play at the student night I'd go to that did this, but there wasn't any backing track or anything just a click track. And I gotta say this band sounded so goddamn tight. And the click track was why, I thought it was pretty clever, but likely better suited to that kind of genre that values machine like tightness rather than loose spontenaity. Cardiacs is , weirdly, in the middle of that spectrum. It does sound wild and loose, but its really quite rehearsed and deliberate.

Just when I though I couldn't be more head smashed, this comes along and ruins me...to the serious music lover this is as important as air and water....is it hyperbole to say Cardiacs are the most significant find to those who can appreciate the intricacies of form...it took me into my 60s to find this, I'll be unraveling it into my 70s and beyond....

Well put. There is nothing else like Cardiacs. There never again will be, either.

I remember Sarah Smith saying in an interview that the band once suggested to Tim to try to make the songs a bit more simple. She also said that he payed no attention. Gotta love Tim!

How in the name of JEEBUS do they keep it together from 2:25 to 3:40? Nearest thing to impossible I think I've ever heard played.

This is absolutely glorious. This, Ditzy Scene, Made All Up...your uploads are a blessing to we who regrettably missed out back in the day. Is there any chance of a good quality "Joining the Plankton"? The only other on here sounds like it was recorded down a telephone. And not a good one.

WDeeGee1 Lights in darker places Darker than lights in places Than lights in places down far Cold as like's recalling winter Recalling winter Recalling, wind says too far Tasting her with those sensitive suckers Sea birds destroyed her Sea birds destroyed her nest I don't feel like one, I don't live like one They put me on a wheel and I said yes Ideal No peace of mind Ideal mind's hard to find All we ever do's die All we ever do is dying for a peace of mind 's hard as hard is to find All we ever do's die All we ever do is ideal I say don't breathe in It'll save you the bothering of breathing it all out again Hens attack us I say look for yourself A ring of suffering horses are Ideal No peace of mind Ideal mind's hard to find All we ever do's die All we ever do is dying for a peace of mind 's hard as hard is to find All we ever do's die All we ever do is ideal
