Is this some kind of music theory joke? Are those the signatures? Please explain it to me like Im five
@uselessaccount99294 жыл бұрын
@@erikdk321 It's a joke about time signatures. Basically, the song is in 8/8, aka 8 repeating eighth notes, but sometimes the song adds one eighth note like on 1:07. That changes the time signature form 8/8 into 9/8. That's the joke. If it helps, try quickly counting to 8 in the beat of the song, and witness that your counting will be wrong after some parts of the song.
@erikdk3214 жыл бұрын
@@uselessaccount9929 Thanks man!
@Thardus6164 жыл бұрын
@@erikdk321 I'll reiterate the joke because it's incorrect. 8/9 doesn't exist as the denominator is not a power of two, nor a viable irrational meter. The verse is three lots of 4/4 and the last bar is 5/4. On the beat the vocals hit around 1:04, trying counting the beats as 4, 4, 4, 5, then it will make more sense.
@uselessaccount99294 жыл бұрын
@@Thardus616 yeah im an idiot. it was supposed to be 9/8 not 8/9. i'll edit that. thanks for the correction mate.

I've recently come to the Cardiacs after several friends' posts commiserating Smith's death. They definitely are phenomenal, though I'm not sure I'd say unique. They sound eerily close to Split Enz in their early art-rock phase (the Enz were based in the UK around the time Cardiacs formed). Their vocalist even sounds a bit like the Enz's old singer/guitarist Phil Judd. Both brilliant bands.

My favourite thing about this video is how they're performing with the sort of virtuosic progginess that bands like Genesis, King Crimson, Gentle Giant and so on would want to call attention to, but they spend the entire video taking the piss out of themselves, not even bothering to sync their mimed playing to the track (Pixies did a similar thing with the video for "Here Comes Your Man"). They quite simply don't _care_ what you think. Absolutely no self-importance or delusions of grandeur whatsoever. "Yeah, we can play one of the most compositionally complex songs you've ever heard but we're not going to make deal about it." Brilliant.
