---------ABOUT THE VIDEO---------
This video was originally uploaded to our other channel, Casual Navigation, back in 2018.
"Cardinal Marks" is the latest video in the "Buoyage in Depth" series.
Cardinal marks consist of the following main buoys:
North Cardinal
East Cardinal
South Cardinal
West Cardinal
I talk you through the different buoys that make up the cardinal marks. I show you their characteristics and how to recognise them to keep your vessel in safe water.

In Poland, there is a popular memorisation technique for cardinal marks: Pines in the north, palms in the south, fat woman in the east, slim women in the west. This references the shapes made by the topmark cones. (Though the word used for woman is kind of pejorative.)

But why does it matter if they point to the black bits? I don't understand. If you already know which one it is based on the arrows on top what is the significanse of the colors?

Thanks, I reviewed this before testing for 3rd/2nd Mate/OICNW and again for my 1600t Master OC, it really helps a ton. Great tip on thinking of it like a clock face for the light characteristics.

The most natural way to tell east and west cardinal marks apart is by remembering that the Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Imagining sunrise and sunset reflected off the ocean will help you make this connection very easily.

Thanks a lot, very well designed videos. One note: the expression "buoy, pillar or spar" for shape is a bit confusing. It is not what the British Admitaly Mariner's Handbook and other publications use. The say pillar or spar (not buoy) for most marks, except lateral and prefered channel (which can also be cone or can), and safe water mark, which can be a ball. Just a detail, your work is very much appreciated, thanks again.

questions for you as you find them around marines and rivers 1 ware do row boat (coxed 4 and 8 )come into colregs as not power or sail ???? 2 ware do paddle boards come into it as not power or sail ??? do you just give wide berth for safety reasons and reduce wash iif not inheading other vessels
@TheSilmarallion
@TheSilmarallion 3 жыл бұрын
In rule 25 it says vessel under Sail or under oar, to display light etc. So looking at the row boat or paddle boarders lack or inability to comply with the rules. Vessels with more power should keep out of way or avoid collision as much as possible. But a paddler will generally not be in a shipping lane or harbour entrance also I think there will be local rules that will specify right of way. As in Sydney harbour the sight seeing boats having right of way. But you are more than correct in giving them a wide berth and reduce wash... But remember Rule 1.

Are the cardinal marks always placed in groups of four? Or can you encounter 1 to four of them either alone or toghether?
