That's a great way of memorising the cardinals. This helps a lot. In Europe, we have a way of differencing between East and West cardinals by the saying. "Fat Russian girl" for East and "Slim French girl" for West due to the triangle shapes :)
@SailingVirgins3 жыл бұрын
Hahaha we love that. But dammit we also love slim Russian girls, so our memory could fail us at the critical time.

Nice! Just a suggestion for remembering where the black and yellow is > it is like to old fashioned pencil (yellow colored pencil with a black point). And for the # of flashes > the numbers on the clock (+1 for 6). Hope this helps some of you that have the same bad memory as I have.

I love the way you explained the markers James. You made the markers very easy to understand and remember as well. As former military, great use of the whiteboard as well. I am a visual learner and you make it so easy to understand. I love your videos and how much I learn from you guys. As always, I am looking forward to the next lesson (video). Teamjuliedan

West: It's like a Wine cup / East: It's like the up&down buttons on the Elevator

East is opposing triangles... imagine opening your curtains in the morning as the sun comes up.. in the east.. letting the sun come in between 2 dark curtains. West has two triangles pointing towards each other.. like closing your curtains at night.. as the sun sets in the west.. make it dark again in the middle. So.. east and west are based on opening and closing curtains.. simple. Love the videos guys.. I have learned a ton watching you as a newbie.

Thanks for the nice clear explanation. If it helps, another way to remember East and West is if you trace your finger around the day shape (starting middle left) it makes a little 'e', just like tracing the other one makes a 'w'.

Great vid - Dominica looks niiice. Keep cranking them out lads. Any chance you could do a vid on trimming sails? Probably not the most exciting topic but I've always been a bit confused by how you can tell what's wrong by how the sails flap, as well some of the more technical aspects like the positioning of the cars, when to tighten the vang etc.

Will do! We will be cranking out videos over the next couple of months Ben. If you are interested in being a Patron (starting at $3 per episode) we would be eternally grateful: www.patreon.com/sailingvirgins

For those who are not content with the "Easter Egg" analogy: let me teach you one small bit of German. The German word for "East" is "Ost" which makes the eastern cardinal easy to remember. PS: yeah, I know, I´m quite late to the show
@jancienski20894 жыл бұрын
Was taught that north looks like a Christmas tree, south is like a palm tree, east (where Russia is) is like a tubby babushka, west (where California is) looks like a beach girl.
@ljdasilva31394 жыл бұрын
The north and south cardinals are easy to remember, I was taught that the way to remember the west cardinal mark is through the ditty 'wasp waist west' because the two cones form a 'waist' - then anything else is an east cardinal mark - it's a cruel world.

Could you please give the email of your guide to explore Dominica ?
@SailingVirgins3 жыл бұрын
Dominica is wonderful. When you go to Rosseau you can look tie up to a ball for a reasonable nightly fee (around US$25-30), and they can look after your water etc. If you're fit, I suggest you do the Boiling Lake walk. I recommend you take a guide as a) it is quite difficult to navigate the first time you do it and b) provides employment to the locals. Having said that, you might need to gently haggle if the price is too high. Boiling Lake is around 6 hours from Rosseau and return including time to drive up to the start. At Portsmouth, to the north of the island, you can anchor; it has the Indian River which is well worth doing. We love Dominica. Hope that helps!
@paulfinnigan35624 жыл бұрын
Afraid have to correct you. North cardinal is always quick flashing (QFl) or very quick flashing (VQFl), never just flashing (FL).
@seeuathebeach4 жыл бұрын
Afraid have to correct you. ALL CARDINAL MARK MUST BE either QFl or VQFl. Yet the point is that you forgot a must preface before correcting: that these guys ALWAYS make possibly the best sailing tutorial videos on the planet.
@paulfinnigan35624 жыл бұрын
@@seeuathebeach didn't watch the whole video, therefore didn't see that they made the mistake with the other buoys too. Have watched a couple of their other videos and would say they're better than a lot of other crap I've seen!
