Driving above 80 in highway it's better to drive with.A.C but driving in the city and slow speed with A.C milage drops down min 1.5 to 2 per liter.This is my 15th year in car and I have done many times with ac and without, this is my conclusion

I drive from Bangalore to hubli every 15 days. I just roll down 3 windows by 0.5 inch and drive with AC OFF at 90kmph avg. I get 23kmpl mileage. If I roll up all windows and put ac at 26 degree and drive at the same 90kmph I get a fuel efficiency of 20kmpl. AC compressor consumes 1ltr of fuel for 1hour on an avg.

To operate the ac compressor , you require 5 to 7 HP of your engine horse power will be drained , it will reduce the fuel efficiency by 1 to 2 kmpl, and rolling down the window on hiway will increase the drag on the vehicle thare by increasing the wind resistance, again you might be loosing 2 kmpl , wind-up the window active AC , drive on constant speed of 80 kmph , put vechical into netural and do a Free coasting on a long treach , with AC , and off the ac when you want to accelerate, will give you same milage

Using AC in city will definitely decrease the mileage by 2 km per liter. Maybe on highway around 80 km per hour, it may be negligible.

What about power consumption by AC compressor? Where will it come from? Engine right? So mileage should reduce.

mileage will reduce. In luxury vehicles extra power is reserved for AC so with or without AC mileage is same. because the engine is tuned to performance not for mileage. those vehicles always have less mileage. eg Maruthi upto 1.2l engines are tuned for max mileage.Research: vehicle never driven with full load like always 5 passengers. 80% of the time its not more than 3 people so the engine is tuned in such fashion. But in 1.5 L engine its different appox: 100 cc is reserved for AC still vehicle will perform with 1400cc quite well.also the mileage is less.its performance based.

Very informative, many ppl have wrong impression on the A/C as bad. With A/C travelling after 300+ kms still one will be fresh, without A/C even travelling 20-30 kms one will see disturbed hairs and greasy & dusty face.

agutte. ella 1.2 L engine tuned for mileage. keeping in mind 3 people on board so if you push in 5 then you have mileage issue as well as pickup issue. All 1.5 L engine cars tuned for performance 100CC is reserved for AC.so with Ac without AC mileage same much less than 1.2 L engine cars.

See in Volvo bus its called power plant. the engine always has extra power its tuned in such a way for ac certain amount of power is reserved and always awailable (running) you use AC or not that much fuel is consumed. same with Innova, Fortuner etc.with ac without ac fuel consumption almost same. these are Luxury sigment performance vehicles.
