Hey Dave, Try this. Make some paper or cardboard cones to put in the roach box to collect them. Vary the size of the cone for the amount of roaches you want to catch. A feeding cone might be 4" tall. One to assist with the cleaning could be foot tall and hundreds of roaches could climb up inside the cone ready for transport to their new home. Cut out small entries at the bottom of the cone. You could put toothpick legs on the big cones so the beetles can't climb up with the roaches. Natural sorting because beetles will run to the edge of the tub. Roaches run to the cone to hide. Watching the way they run up your hand, running up the dark inside of a cone would be a natural catching method, no need to hassle sifting out roaches and rubbish. Great for squeamish folks that really don't like to touch the roaches or get them on their hands. The roaches will separate themselves. Just lift them out slowly and shake over the target, for feeding or return to a clean tub.. I saw this at a professional cricket farm. They sized the cones to hold how many they wanted to catch per order. Example: One size cone holds 100 roaches... with your separated roaches in the tub, put in 5 cones, each fill up with 100 roaches,..voila! Make the Catch Cones any size you need to for the activity you are involved in. Catching for feeding, counting, or just moving from one tub to another. When done, cones stack for storage.

Those beetles! I had to give up with my last Lateralis colony and start it again. I had so many beetles that the roaches could not even rest for a few minutes. They do eat everything indeed, I bet they ate most of the ootecas during this time. The colony was with a soil substrate and wooden repairs, was able to produce big amount of them, until these beetles took over. Going now back to a much easier to maintain setup, like yours. Fast, clean and easy. I'll play with a fancy setup for the Gromphadorhina, never again for Lateralis ahahahah Nice video, going to check your others and I guess subscribe!

As for water source, I made my roaches a water drinking station made from a deli container and it works pretty well. You need a plastic container with lid, a synthetic wick (i use synthetic flannel strips) and a plastic mesh. First, make a hole on the lid slightly smaller of the wick width. Pull the wick through just long enough so it can sit on top of the lid. They'll drink from it. If the wick is too long that it can dangle to the side and below the water line, the water could get syphoned out of the container. Lastly, glue a strip of mesh to the lid so they can climb up the container or you can lean anything that the roaches can climb onto it. I change the wick every time i top up the water or if it's dirty enough.. And since there's no open holes, the water loss from evaporation is very minimal and it keeps the water clean. I hope that's understandable. English is not my first language. Cheers.

I think the biggest pro of these red runner roaches is that you don’t have to crush their heads to offer enough stimulation and to keep them from hiding (like with dubia’s) I personally don’t have a problem with crushing roach heads but I seem to be in the minority I’ve been feeding my roaches pumpkin, they are very cheap and available (especially in this season), have a long shelf life in the fridge, they love them, are the most healthy vegetable (actually fruit) available and I roast and eat the seeds myself

Looking at this video it's starting to make me want to keep roaches as pets lol. They look so easy to take care of yet they thrive at these very simple conditions. It's wonderful! Not sure what I'd do once the population gets out of control that's the scariest part. A reason to have something that "eats" a few every now and then.

Very fascinating and creepy video although I find any insects crawling on a person's skin creepy. I'm not allowed red runners as I had some last year but some managed to escape so my parents have said they are never allowed in this house ever again lol. I prefer dubia roaches myself as they don't look at creepy and are just as easy to keep and way easier to catch haha. I use that water gel stuff for my dubias as it lasts a few days and means my terrible memory doesn't cause any issue, I tried feeding greens but I kept forgetting to put the greens into the tubs so decided to use the water gel things as I can put them in and they last 2-4 days depending on how much I put in and it seems to just evaporate which is pretty awesome. I only have 1 tarantula though so my dubia colony is tiny compared to that colony of red runners which is probably why I can get away with using the water gel lol, I only have about 10 dubia's left now and I had them for about 3 months.

Do the adult roaches feed on the babies by any chance as I can’t understand why I’m not seeing babies? What was the dry feed you use in this video please ? Hey Dave, hope you are doing good! Watched the whole video and read all the comments. A couple of quick searches led me to two questions I would love to get answers for. 1) How do you dispose the frass that potentially still has baby roaches in it after the two weeks you mentioned, or has the beetles in it? I believe you don't just throw it in the bin. 2) Is it true that people (especially children and elderly) can develop asthma and/or allergies from red roaches as well as from dubia? Thank you very much in advance, and have a great day!

Hi Dave. Hope you’re well mate. I sadly had to eradicate my red runner colony due to an outbreak of mites. I had it really dry in there with lots of Ventilation. I thought this may have been due to lack of dermestid beetles in my colony. After watching your video now I see dermestid beetles are unnecessary. Do you think that I just got unlucky and some come in on a top up batch of breeding adults I added, or is there anything else you can think may have caused this? As it would be handy to get another colony going. Just don’t want another mite incident as was a nightmare to deal with haha.

you see how I keep mine and I've never had a problem with mites, you may have brought them in with other roaches, I dont think the dermisted beetles are that beneficial to my colony hence I took them all out time will tell .

@@daveslittlebeasties thanks for the reply Dave. Think I’ll just have to get some more adults in and give it another go. The only difference between our setups was I had a water bowl in there. So that’s maybe why it encouraged the mites. I’ll just stick to the green leaves this time.

I found a few flour beetles many years ago and I kept them in a container. They looked nothing like that. The larvae was yellow and never dark. I was a novice at keeping them and failed miserably. It worked out for a few years, them just hanging out in their little container but eventually things got out of control. They were just too many and the mold started creeping in(my fault). It's so important to keep it bone dry. In the end I just let them out in the wild where they probably didn't fare too well. Many of these "pests" seems to really thrive alongside us humans but without us they're almost struggling.

I'm kinda scared trying out giving them salad since I gave some to our crickets and then like 1/3 of our colony suddenly died... even through it was high quality organic local salad. Oh... and sicne we don't have any beetles in there I have a pretty simple way of cleaning it. I take like half of the crates out, so the rest of the colony hides in the remaining. After I clean the first half, put the other crates one by one of it out while leaving the roaches inside.. when I'm done, they all migrated to the clean side and I can finish up the rest.
