Aww I just wanted to hug you when you were tearing up during the success part of your story. lol I'm 27 and have very little education beyond highschool due to life events, constant moving etc. I'm now at a point where I can't decide whether to be a dietitian or a nurse. It's my understanding that there's more job opportunities in nursing, nursing hours are better, RDs don't get paid as much and that RDs are very underappreciated . But since I was a child I loved eating healthy foods without having to be forced by parents and to this day (even before considering dietetics as a career) I love to help people with making their meals healthier and giving them tips on better eating habits. I've even recently started a health blog. I have no desire whatsoever to drug people all day.... especially when it is my belief that they contribute to many of our countrys health problems. But I DO like the pay, flexibility, and opportunities. Anyway, your video may have just been the thing to shove me down dietetics path regardless of all that nursing has to offer. You've shown that dietetics can also have many opportunities including making your own business of it. I'm a health-nut at heart and nursing goes against that in one of the worse ways in my opinion. So my decision is made. Sorry for the rambling but you have no idea how much this helped me.

This video got me emotional because I am graduating this may with a dtr degree and will be taking the test in July. It's been a struggle and just recently I've been losing confidence in my self as the days get closer to taking the test. I stated feeling overwhelmed hearing about the material my teachers are telling me Will be on the exam . Watching this video is so encouraging. Hearing someone who's been through a similar path say you can do it, don't give up if you work hard you can achieve things.its so true. All my life I've struggled with school but focusing on a goal and vision and NEVER giving up will make all the difference. Thank you for sharing your story.

I love that you infuse your faith into your story. I am considering going to school to become a dietitian/nutritionist. I went to school for music but quit half way through my junior year, a couple years ago. I couldn't stand the academic setting I was in, disagreed with too much and felt I was wasting my money. Music is my calling and it is in my DNA, I am Director or Music and Organist for a large church here in Los Angeles, but I am also passionate about food, health, cooking, feeding people healthful foods, etc... I feel it may be another calling. Time will tell. Your videos are inspiring and informative. Gratitude and Blessings!

+HealthyGroceryGirl Hi Megan! This video has been one of the most helpful video on the whole RD journey I've seen so far! It's just so inspiring and I feel that I am in similar circumstances as you were. I'm currently in my final DPD semester and graduating in May. During this winter break I have been doing nothing but stress over my DI applications and looking through the internet for guidance. I'm actually planning on applying to USUDI too and have my in-patient clinical and school foodservice rotations set up (yay!). But if possible I would like to go through a traditional DI experience rather than a distance... what would you say is the best way to set yourself apart from other applicants? (even if other might have a more competitive GPA or life experience in general)
@HealthyGroceryGirl8 жыл бұрын
+yunatuna Hi! I'm so glad you found this video helpful!! Sorry for the delay in replying your comment I just noticed it!! That's great that you are planning to apply to USUDI as well!!! Hmm... great question on setting yourself apart from other applicants!! I always felt that in interviews and writing essays I did well because I was able to articulate my goals, passion for the profession and express my drive & hard work ethic. I think these traits are key for any career! Also good references help too!

Thanks for the pep talk on this video! I thought I had passed the RDN exam as there was a rumor if you get to 125 questions and it stops, you've passed. Hah, no. I was very close. The second time I took it, I slowed it down a little but then my test went from 125 to 145 questions!!! I had 17 minutes, and then just 3 seconds in the very end... my score had improved by 2 points but I just barely missed the mark due to time. I'm taking it in September 2018 and leaving as an RDN!! Can't say enough how its good to know that I wasn't alone in this.

Megan, I really appreciated listening to your story and full honesty about your experience in school, as well as after you graduated. I think it is really important for people to talk about their experience in this way because everyone's path is so complex and different. It's too late for me to become a RD/RDN because I'll be 30 next year, and I already have student loans I'm paying off, but I think I'm starting to figure out how I can also help people be healthy. +Megan Ryan Thank you! So happy you found this video to be helpful! One of the biggest lessons I've learned throughout my career is to listen to my gut and follow that discernment. Don't make decisions based on fear or hold back just because something will be a challenge or uncomfortable for a season. Growth only happens when we are out of our comfort zone! Gotta follow that passion girl!! I wish you the best with your RD path!! You can do it!! xx M

This was very touching and inspiring! I am looking into the career choice of being a dietitian and I truly appreciate how genuine you are and how thorough you were in explaining the challenges and benefits. I could really relate to the feelings that you described, not in the same situation, but I've definitely experienced those feelings of putting everything you have into something, especially schooling, and then being so disappointed when things aren't going your way. I also did not give up and I trusted God and He has led me down the right path. Not an easy one, but the best one :)

Thank so much for sharing this online! I'm from China and always interested in the field of nutrition, but my bachelor has nothing to do with it. So I always used it as an excuse and no more pursed this part of my interest. Recently I've finally decided to further my studies in US. I know to be an RD as an international student means more challenges but the good thing is I'm not afraid (for the first time) of the unsure future and those difficult terms or concepts which I'm self-learning now. I would appreciate it so much that you could do some videos about the books, websites or videos that we ordinary people could also use as the resource and reference.Thank you again!! Because the resources about RD here in China are limited. I felt lucky to find your channel. Best regards! ^_^

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I have decided to go back to Uni later in life to become a R.D. but have to upgrade all my high school science and math courses first. School doesn't come easy to me either; I have to work hard at it. As a mature student it is challenging to balance work, family and school life. I live in Ontario, Canada. I subscribed to your channel and find you inspiring!

I am proud of your hard work and determination. It's easier to look back on it and say all these things, but I can't imagine how much pressure you must have felt throughout those years. I know I want to study nutrition and am considering being a registered dietitian, but I also want to explore other careers related to food. I'm not very smart though my peers say otherwise... in fact I avoided as many science classes in high school as possible haha! I just know I love explaining healthy eating to patients and see their progression (so outpatient setting). Unfortunately I applied to a school that requires me to have a master's degree before applying for a dietetics program (the only school that requires this in NYC...!). I guess I ought to volunteer more to gain more experience :) Thank you so much for sharing your story!

+Karen Mai Thank you! You're right as time goes by it becomes more of a memory however when I was actually going through it there were many stressful days and lots of tears! I wish you the absolute best with your dietetics and career journey! The biggest thing I've learned is just not to give up if you really want something however also be willing to give something up if you feel your heart is not in it or it's truly for you! Like I mentioned I changed my career path a few times before ending up with becoming an RD and then I didn't even become a clinical RD like I originally thought I would! Life is all about change and allowing it to happen if it's right! Anyways... all of this is to say that I wish you the best!!! :)

I LOVE YOUR VIDEO!!! You're such an inspiration!!!❤️ I love the way you speak, I identify myself with you a lot ☺️. Specially the sentimental part.lol I have three handsome boys and my best friend of course, my husband. I have been really giving it A LOT of thought of going back to school in the nutrition field. I know, it would definitely take me YEARS to get there. Specially because of the financial part. But with God nothing is impossible❤️ THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing!! God bless!!😊

This was so refreshing to hear! Most of the stories that people put out there are the ones that were fairly obstacle free. I'm a junior nutrition student and feel the same way; I am not naturally "smart." I have had to work harder than most to make those As and Bs but your story is encouraging! I pray I get a match the first try but it is very reassuring to hear that it is not the end of the world If I do not. Thanks for sharing your experience!

+blog love I TOTALLY understand!! Some of my classmates would hardly study and easily get As! I really had to study and go over material multiple times to really get it and memorize it. Science is not easy!! If you get matched the first time that is awesome!! But if not, I'm a big believer that everything happens for a reason and my year between applying again I really learned a lot & I actually LOVED the internship I added as my top choice the second time applying (which was not on my list the first time I applied). So looking back, it actually turned out better! Just have to do your personal best & let life happen the way it's suppose to!! :)

Thank you so much for sharing your story! I felt as if we were having this conversation in your living room haha. Lately I have been I don't want to say discouraged but definitely nervous about my career path. I am about to start my senior year in dietetics meaning Internship applications are soon approaching. I haven't been able to gain as much nutrition related experiences because I have had to spend most of my time working at places that pay enough for me to afford school. Now I am worried because I know if I get matched I will have to pay for that too. I have been considering waiting a year after I graduate to apply for the Internships and during that year continue working to save up for the internship. The last thing I would want would be to get matched and then have to turn down the opportunity because I can't pay for it. I admire you so much for being dependent on God and the path he led you on. So thank you for everything you shared on your video and I pray that God continues to use you to encourage others, like myself, to not be discouraged by the things that God allows to happen for a reason :)

You shared your story, I want to share mine. It's a long story. First, I want to thank you for sharing this. It made me feel not so alone. I discovered I wanted to be a writer when I was in middle school. I soon realized that the kind of writing I wanted to do would not pay the bills, so I went on a job search to see which careers would I like and would give me enough time and money to write and pay my bills. I went through so many careers because I am interested in so many things, including psychology and biology. I decided I would become a forensic pathologist. I'm like you. I'm not naturally smart. I am definitely not good at math at all. I am a Sophomore in college, retaking Bio 1, and taking Chem 1, College Algebra and my second English class. I am struggling. I don't know if I'm supposed to do this. I believe in God, also. I pray and ask and maybe I'm supposed to stick with this whole Biology degree thing. The school I go to does not offer a Dietetics degree. I wasn't thinking about being one until I started searching for low stress jobs for biology majors and this one popped up and I realized that I'm always researching about healthy foods and diets and what works and how foods interact with our bodies and did a bit more research about the job. I'll be honest. I never took into account studying in high school, so studying is not a natural thing for me. I've skated by without it. But, chemistry class is killing me, and so is bio. I know people say I have to study and practice and work hard. I want to. I don't want to be failure who never worked to my full potential. I don't know why I keep wasting time doing other unimportant things and not doing what I need to do. It's hard. It's the hardest class I have ever taken. I'm confused all the time, never know which questions to ask because I don't know what's going on and if I do ask, I'll be even more confused and frustrated. Most of the time, my brain is blank and all I can do is write notes and try to understand them. I go to tutoring, but I can't stay for as long as I need because if I did, we would probably be there for about a week, more or less, so I go and try to get as much help as I can, but it's still not enough to help me understand everything. So I came to the conclusion that I'll just change my major. That way, I won't have to go through so much math and chemistry and frustration and all that. I'm interested in Biology and chemistry (except the math parts, which is a huge part of it), but when I think about it, I'm not sure if it'll be worth it in the end. However, I tried changing my major last year, and I had a sinking feeling and every time I think about changing it now, that sinking feeling comes back. One friend tells me he doesn't want to see me struggle (change my major), another says to follow my gut (stay with my major). The same friend that doesn't want me to struggle says that I'm just afraid that the whole writing thing won't work out and to try not being afraid. What if what he's saying is true for my major? And how do I know what God is trying to say? He gives me that sinking feeling, then sends me a friend to encourage me to go on the writing path. What am I supposed to do? Who do I talk to? I am so conflicted. I am already prepared for not getting into med school, and if I change my mind about dietitian, I don't know what to do. I don't want a job where we'll use chemistry and chem math. It'll stress me out. I know this is five years late, but do you have any advice or career suggestions? Thanks

Awesome advice! I feel you gave me a good idea of what is required to become a dietician and/or nutritionist. I am a junior in high school, and I am exploring my options for future careers. I have studied nutrition and food on my own time, and it is one of the most interesting subjects in my opinion. I think I would like to give Dietetics and nutrition a shot because I personally feel fit. Thanks for an awesome video on this subject!

Hi Helen!! So smart of you to already be prepping yourself for your career! If you love nutrition and dietetics you should totally go for it! There are so many more options and career paths for being an RD today then even when I was in school!! :)
@aamariamason45626 жыл бұрын
I've been putting off your video since Dec 12th! I took time off of work because there was sooo much going on in my health/wellness part of my life and God finally said to me while I was standing in my apartment wondering what I was going to do with my life... to help heal/nourish people (I just didn't know what the name was yet) You see, when I was 11 I thought I wanted to be a Plastic Surgeon and move to Beverly Hills and live that life. And then I decided I wanted to be CEO sometime before the plastic surgery idea was conjured up - but! I've always known in my heart of hearts that I want to own my own business. And I have ALWAYS wanted to help people! Both my mom and aunt are nurses so I knew I didn't want to help in that way, but I knew I KNEW I wanted to help HEAL others with gifts and talents but I could never put my finger on it! So then I said: chiropractic! You could heal!! You could help people reach their potential!! But then I doubted myself and felt like I wasn't strong enough intellectually or that I wasn't intrinsically motivated enough to stick with the 8-10 yrs of school, so I shot that thought down! (It's not that it can't possibly happen someday, adding Dietetics and Chiropractic would be an amazing career path) BUT Dec 12th made me stop and really ask myself - what do I really want out of life? Do I really want to work at a bank for the rest of my life? Am I really that afraid to fail? Am I really going to let the size of student loans scare me into not even applying ? Because the other paths that I considered choosing sounded "so nice on paper," and I "could have made a decent amount of money." But when I think about my heart and my passion for helping people and then pairing that with my own lifestyle and eating habits (I'm Plant Based, Vegan) I just knew that Nutrition and Dietetics was FOR ME! Even if it may not sound as exciting for most people! But I'm NOT MOST PEOPLE!! And when God gives you a platform to help uplift/encourages in their day to day lifestyles (which is what you do when you're a RD) I figured I can't do anything but go all in for it! Even if I'm afraid of matching! Or all of the freaking chemistry classes I'll have to take! Or the Masters Degree standard, if it's for me - it's for me! You didn't get matched your first time pass, BUT look at where God has you now! Every story is different but God will use your story if you let Him! So thank you for sharing!!! And in the end it's not about the letters after our names!! But where we will get to celebrate when this is all over: HEAVEN! So T H A N K Y O U 💛💛💛
