For question #1 on a more mathematical approach, I would do this (I skip some steps but you should already know just by looking at the formula & same formula for question #2): step 1: (67+67+70+68+X)/5 = 53 step 2: 272+X = 325 step 3: X = 325 - 272 Solution is X = 53

q1 is quicker and easier if you simply add up (in your head) the variances from the average of 65 which is 12. To then get back to 65, the last number needs to be 65-12=53.
