i'll take a guess.. it's a compulsive behaviour that has developed over yrs of playing. Sure, some adjustment may be needed at times however to me this is more akin to waggling a golf club before taking each shot - not strictly necessary but puts one in the zone. Not taking away from his playing at all, he's bloody amazing!
