Frank Srobotnjak I agree she behaved very badly, but don't think the police handled it well enough either. His voice was calm, but his refusal to just simply tell her why they were pulled over was because, as he admitted, he was put off by her demeanor. Understandably so, but in his type of work you'll encounter all kinds of bad behavior. He needs to know how to not let it get to him so that he participates in a power struggle & adds fuel to her fire. He should have known how to de-escalate her pumped up importance.

This goes on everyday in all stages of gov't and municipalities this is one time the police did not care who you are but most of the time they cave in and these Gov't and city commissioners, councilman, state reps, dept heads etc etc get away with their nonsense if she did not get caught on tape acting the way she did that car would have been returned a few hours after it was towed cause the local mayor would have contacted chief of police and the head of who was running the towed vehicles division and they would have said go pick up the vehicle and then the case would never have made it to the courthouse but she got caught on video so they have to make it look good like the system does not work that way but in reality it does!!!!

Okay, to play devil's advocate, those cops, after impounding the vehicle, did tell them to call someone to transport them. At that point, the person called was obviously involved in the situation. And, since she was a city employee, it wasn't unreasonable ask her fellow city employees what's going on. The cop had an attitude from the start.

jkirk1626 It’s not quite that simple. I’ve seen the full video, which shows everything from the initial stop, to the very end. The police officer was very professional with the students. He actually issued no citation at all. But the fact that the car’s registration had expired two years ago, left him with little choice but to impound the vehicle. He actually told the student that if it had been a week or two, that’s one thing. But two years, plus no proof of insurance is another matter. The law gave him no discretion there. He was the grad student at MIT, and lives in Massachusetts (we also have a ban on tinted windows, by the way, though it’s loosely enforced). But again, he issued no citation. I can’t remember the cost of towing, but the storage cost is $20 per day, which is really inexpensive, compared to many other communities. Had he wanted, he could have issued a number of citations; he issued not a single one.

I live in State where this happened and when the Police Chief of Tenefly saw the video, he was so ticked off, he sent the video to this woman's boss. She is the mother of a passenger, and stated that she is an attorney. That is clear. She should have introduced herself as the girl's mom, and asked "Is my daughter under arrest?" If answer is Yes, only then should she say she is an attorney, and is legally representing her daughter. Therefore, as her daughter's attorney, officer should brief her on the daugher's charge. If answer is no, just give your daughter a ride home. Instead, she gives a bunch of B.S. about being a concerned citizen who deserves to know what obviously doesn't involve her.
