Traditional patterns are not often seen in today's fly boxes with new designs and materials seeming to take their place. The Carey Special is one pattern design I always have with me. Its suggestive nature and animated hackle have proved its worth on more than one occasion. I recommend always having a few size and color variations on hand.

Hi Mike, I am pleased to hear that you enjoying my video. Yes, those are Guinea body feathers. I often get them in packages and prefer the fine spotted feathers with narrower, easy to wind, feathers. Cheers, Phil

Great pattern thanks for sharing it. I will be learning to fish since I have been tying flies for about four years. I am mostly a still water fisherman and haven't used a fly rod yet. I will have to learn the other 2/3 of the sport when The Lord takes my wife. All the best and thanks again. Sean

You can also use ostrich herl , I use two colors and tie them and twist them then wrap them around the hook. I also use colored copper wire to secure the herl. take your scissors and trim the body the desired shape for a tapered body. I have also used three colors twisted together it's a bit more work but you create a pattern that you cannot buy at shop.

Thanks for another great video on this pattern. I didn't have the speckled chenille on hand so I'm trying it with the Stillwater Crystal olive-dun chenille. It looks great with the olive Guinea fowl.

+Stryker 2 Hi Stryker 2, thanks for the kind words regarding the video. There are lots of great substitutes out there. I have used Crystal Chenille before with great results. Thanks, Phil

+Philip Rowley Here in South Africa our trout fishing consists mainly of stillwaters, and you and Brian have changed the way I fish through all your articles, videos etc. A lot of my fish I can attribute to your chironomid techniques. Really appreciate it. If I ever make it back to Canada, I hope to go fishing with you guys! Keep up the good work.

hi Phill, great looking Carey Special. spirit river has some fine products. I called them about 30 years ago to ask for a catalogue. I don't know if I talked to Bill Black but the gentleman said he was sorry but they're not retail. I explained that I was just starting to tye and I was looking for pictures of flies and materials for reference. he was nice enough to send me one. boy I cherished that thing! lots of illustrations & tips. cool old photos of his & his partners families. sorry I get so wordy. Phil you fish way more than I do, have you seen a difference in your catch rate using UV products? I know fisherman spray it on their lures and such. some well known fly fishers either swear by it or see no difference. what's your experience? thanks.

Hi Joe, I believe UV fluorescence is important at certain times when visibility is an issue such as low light, murky water or deep water. I often incorporate fluorescent 'hot spots' into my flies for those conditions. I also incorporate fluorescent materials into my attractors such as Booby's, Blobs and FAB's. Recent study seems to show that trout can only see UV reflectance when they are very young. As they grow and mature the rods used to see UV reflectance shift into to see into the violet and blue color range.
