In this video Carey and Steve Araujo of the Bass Hang discuss P basses and how well they record. And Carey shows off a pretty special 63 Fender P bass that found it's way into his collection.

I don’t even like p basses but , that 63 sounds great! One of the better demos of a product and its creation. So good.

I'm a guitar player with only the slightest dabble on bass, so I wouldn't claim know one P-bass' tone from another; though I bought and sold vintage guitars for many years starting in the 70's and I certainly know the particulars. A buddy of mine has this '59 P-bass, three color SB with the anodized guard and I swear, the thing sounds like it's running through an octave divider. I have never heard another Pbass like his, plus the neck is to die for. Just one of those instruments that you know is a ringer as soon as you put your hands on it, never mind hearing it.

That's so true. Some guitars just have that 'soul' you can hear while you play it. Both of my Ps are that way. I started on a Squier P and I bought American a few years ago. They sound completely different, completely different materials, but they both have "it".

I just bought a 1991 Fender P Bass MIJ the stock pickups are replaced with what looks to be Nordstrand Audio pickups. They’re black and have adjustable pole pieces.. Any idea of the model?

Did you also modify the fretboard radius on that '63?

Great interview but maybe interview should be farther from the mic. A bit loud sometimes.

We can change or improve the sound, BUT I think the sound is not in the pickups or tuners, no matter how good they sound. The sound IS in the wood of the bass body, the wood will always be alive, because it contains water. The bass after the construction continues DRYING, for this reason after many years the wood has more acoustic and sonority, it’s like wine, the more ATTACHED it sound the better !

the wood guitars are made of contains so little water it literally does not matter and is not alive by any means woods do affect the tone but the effect is so miniscule you could as well entirely ignore it unless your instrument has a serious structural issue (say the neck is delaminating or you have a dead spot)
