I am still looking in from the outside, but am at a point in my life where I have no attachments (single, with no family). I would like to go OTR doing cargo van expediting. Despite the current low paying cargo rates, I soon may be in a unique position whereby I can treat cargo vanning more like recreational van life. I am close to getting a contract job doing design work online. This contract would pay all of my bills and the work could be done wherever I have internet connection and during my cargo van down time.

If it fits within the greater scheme and goals that you've set out for yourself, why not? Over-the-road work is a lifestyle thing that some pursue.

Hello Gig Geezer, I love your videos. very informative. I am about to launch my owner operated van freight business here in Australia. My question is - How do you account for EXCESSIVE WAITING TIME at jobs? How much time do you allow and do you tell your clients this / charge them extra...?
@giggeezer Жыл бұрын
It's been my experience that wait time starts after two hours. You have to be in close communication with your broker to ensure that you'll be paid for that wait time.

GG thanks for your transparency and for sharing all the facts. Been doing the research and highly appreciate it. One question -- you mention labor and heavy lifting. Is it possible to survive on lighter food gig + otr freight that is only "no touch" -- where shipper/receiver does the heavy lifting or fork-lifting. Thx for your vids!
@giggeezer Жыл бұрын
You might be able to transition into doing no-touch opportunities and adding opportunities doing gig food delivery work. But I can't give you a definitive answer -- much of that is market driven.

Why wish being 25 years younger? Just get out there. There was no such thing as a gig economy as we know of currently 25 years ago. Hell, the internet still was a relatively new thing in 1998. America Online was the Facebook of its day.

What do you think of the listings on indeed with owner operators making 2500-4500 a week?
@giggeezer Жыл бұрын
I won't say that it's not possible. But it just dawned upon me these listings base those numbers on the likely range per mile rate, which is often anywhere between .80 cents and $1.20 per mile. I would also venture to say those guys are putting in a LOT of miles each week, and that's given the fact they're out there two, three weeks at a time. Translated, it means these drivers are likely to be putting in more than 3,000 miles per week in order to get within that range. That's also based on if they're able to find consistent load opportunities.

These are common concerns about every business, not just this industry.
@giggeezer Жыл бұрын
How are the concerns I mentioned in this video common among other businesses? How is lifting, pulling, and tugging heavy items common if one pursues being an insurance agent?
@harrambeejackson1300 Жыл бұрын
@giggeezer You mentioned the "unknown" and not knowing if there will be profitable work daily. Every business owner has this concern regardless of what field you are in. You also mention about your "break-point". Again, almost every new business owner has these concerns. The smarter business owners plan for 3-6 months of loss, but regardless, this is concern just about every business owner has, regardless of the type of business he/she conducts.
@giggeezer Жыл бұрын
@@harrambeejackson1300 , I agree with your point. I'm sure you'll agree, too, that most people don't think of these concerns. I'm just articulating them because it seems necessary especially in a forum like KZbin.

Hi, how are you? I am new to the channel. I appreciate your information so much. How do you feel about purchasing an older cargo van at first, until my foot is in the door, so to speak? I could work until I have enough saved to purchase a newer van. The problem is: I have heard that some companies will not offer you a contract unless one has an almost new van. If there is reliability, insurance, etc etc, I really do not see what it matters. I am a tad lost in this arena.
@giggeezer Жыл бұрын
You don't have to have almost a brand new van, but some places won't do business with you unless your vehicle is within a certain age range. Usually, that number is within seven to 10 years, or newer. On gig apps, it may go back as far as 15 to 20 years, or newer.

You're doing maintenance and then you put your daily budget. You see you're only going to be my money once you are not dining budget if you're a single and young and have a car licence It is probably better for them in someone with a family.
