The MINI Cooper’s small size and big price tag mean it's not perfect for everyone. But drivers who like their cars to have personality are perfect for the MINI.

A BMW-engineered 4-cylinder engine lives under the hood of our test car. Paired with an automatic transmission, its 228 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque will help this 2019 MINI Cooper 2-Door Hatchback sprint from zero to 60 miles per hour in under 6 seconds. However, with its all-season tires and front-wheel drive, Chris Wardlaw did notice squealing rubber and irritating torque steer whenever he tried it.
The Cooper is all about style. Short overhangs, big headlights and taillights, and the floating roof make it the ideal car for extroverts. But new technology has overwhelmed some of MINI’s classic styling charm. The big center speedometer has been replaced by a more conventional touchscreen (albeit one ringed by a huge circular housing). We do appreciate the inclusion of Apple CarPlay-but Google fans will be upset to learn that Android Auto is not supported.
Few advanced safety systems are offered. But the Cooper is a driver’s car, and it manages that task well. Prices start at $22,750 and can grow to nearly twice that amount with the right trim and options combinations.
