the problem here is lack of context. But I guess we have to just assume that it is about overall impression. Is that the coffee machine in the service lounge? Or is it the fact that you never have to see that lounge, or is it utility of the vehicle or performance. Jags are stylish, but no one wants to own one. BMWs were really getting ugly for a while but since they fired Bangle and Design Works, they're back on the upswing again.

In my opinion, the biggest problem is that these cars use too much technology and when one problem comes up, mechanics either do not know how to deal with them and/or cause others. This happened to me with a 2016 C-Class - it would visit the garage every month till one mechanic solved all the problems, and it is already one year it is riding smoothly, no problems returning or new ones coming up. You need luck and an honest mechanic!

With BMW and Porsche I think it's quite easy to figure out. The owners of these cars almost invariably lease and need to be seen in the latest model, so they flip their cars every 2 or 3 years They never see the huge maintenance and repair costs that come later, it's all under warranty and free initial servicing.

I honestly don’t know how Subaru surpassed Toyota. When a Subaru engine hits 150K miles they start leaking oil like crazy because Subaru uses silicon instead of regular gaskets, so at around 150K miles they have to be rebuilt using real gaskets and then the engine will last another 100K+ miles. I had a Hyundai once - new when I was in college - and it was practically un-roadworthy with no apparent faults and then so many things started breaking. No one would steal that POS if it had a $100 bill on the dashboard with the engine running. I drove an E39M5 for a while and it wasn't BMWs best either. I recently bought a new G07 X7 that came with the free maintenance, so I don't know what you are talking about. I do know that you cannot treat a BMW like a Toyota or Honda due to tight tolerances and spec required oils and intervals. You do know that rating agencies have recently put the BMW lineup at the top or within a few notches of the top. If you think you got bad treatment from the stealer, you can take the issue to HQ in NJ at BMWNA and they will make it right. Most people never do. I love my E60 with it's N54 after they fixed the high pressure pump and injectors - was trouble free. But then do preventative maintenance at suggested intervals rather than letting it go and abusing the car. Both of my B58 powered cars are flawless and make gobs of power with the approved Carhban upgrade done at the stealer.

Let's be honest here about Land Rover Range Rovers. The typical buyer of this vehicle has enough wealth to splurge on a vehicle that costs $300k CAD with taxes and luxury taxes. Most likely they do not care about depreciation because their net worth is very high and $300k is like buying a bag of chips for them. On the other hand, I'm aware that there are individuals out there who have no business buying these car and consciously go into a boatload of debt just to look rich. Since we keep our cars well past warranty, BMW would never top our list. We are approaching our daily driver replacement date. Our brand choices will be: Toyota, Honda, or Mazda. Our drive line choices would be Hybrid preferred. But right now, many of the hybrids we like, don't come with spares. Living out in the desert, we MUST have a spare, so an I.C.E. may have to suffice. Let's see what 2025 brings.

It seems that number of recalls by car company should be looked at more closely. In recent years it seems that Ford has done very badly while Mazda has done very well, for example.

I am not a fan of Volkswagen, but can say of couple of words in their defense. You can buy a new Jetta for below $24000, even with a manual transmission. And this car is very simple, my friend used to have one. There are not many things to break. Yes, parts are a bit more expensive, maybe 20%, but they are nothing in comparison with labor. Now, how can it be worse than Totoya Camry 2020 with 75000 miles on it for the same price? Or a new Honda Civic for $32000 and a waiting period?

You mean that VW that is at #27 in the reliability ranking and it has +50% in TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) vs. the #1 Toyota/Lexus? Is it a surprise that their resale value is far below the top Japanese cars?

@@zhila5958, corect! I have a Miata ND2 RF Top Revolution, it is an unbelievable car. And if you don't want a Cabrio or it is too expensive, a Mazda 3 is in the sub-compact top 3 with Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic (only the lack of hybrid is keeping them away from more commercial success).

No one who buys a luxury car cares about depreciation or gas prices
@codincoman90195 ай бұрын
Many do, myself included. Having wealth doesn't mean you do not pay attention to costs. Actually, many wealthy people do care about saving time and money. Thus, they do not buy luxury cars that are unreliable and have high costs - those cars are for morons. As an example, smart wealthy people buy a #1 Lexus, while morons buy #29 Mercedes etc. Morons don't know/care about wasting time and money, they want to show off, even if they are not wealthy.

@@codincoman9019 Common sense buyers will purchase cars that are worth 5% or less of their total net worth and pay cash. Cars depreciate like rocks in the ocean, everyone knows this is a major wealth inhibitor. I keep my car purchases at 5% or below, therefore, any depreciation will not be felt and more money can be diverted to building more wealth, passive income, or helping family members. There are also contingencies in place after purchasing a new car, such as investing a certain amount like a few hundred thousand dollars into making more passive income. Only then when that goal is reached I can save up the next batch of money to purchase the next car as a "reward" paid in full. At least this is what the spouse and I have agreed upon.
@FionatheFiend5 ай бұрын
You are absolutely right for those who can legitimately afford those kinds cars and not posers who just want to look rich. What I mean by legitimate buyers are people who can afford to pay cash many times over to buy a particular car without leveraging money; The car chosen is worth but a small fraction of those people's net worth that any depreciation is not tangible.

The truth is that the Korean cars are in the middle of reliability/costs rankings, but there are far worse alternatives: Chinese commies' clunkers (including ex-British MG and ex-Swedish Volvo), Indian ones (ex-British Jaguar and Land Rover included), most of the German cars (less Bring My Wallet), the electric clunkers etc. But smart people will buy the top Japanese cars, the peak of reliability and low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership).
