Not knocking the idea (although I love Brad Douriff as both Grima and Pieter de Vries from another favourite epic of mine) but Alan might have made a scarily accurate Tom Bombadil in LOTR. Samwise is actually an Old English name, which does indeed mean "halfwit/semi-wise" In lotr, it's a translation into the Common tongue from Banazir, which is Sam's true name in hobbitish. *been a fan for years, and I only found this out yesterday 😁

Anyway, nerdery my foot! Voted again and again best book of the 20th century, "The Lord of the Rings" is a work of unmitigated GENIUS. I don't quite understand people who haven't read it, but who adore the film. With the exceptions of those who cannot read, for whatever reason. Imagine the book without "The Scouring of the Shire" or Eowyn's and Faramir's beautiful love story, to name but two episodes! I can't do it!

@@andemaiar Well, that sounds like you think she was being deliberately deceptive instead of what I'd think is much more likely, which is just that she's more excitable than she is observant, and she honestly thought she got the line right. I only remember seeing her on QI a couple of times, but she's generally struck me as being a bit daft. Still, that's not a crime, and you don't have to be particularly bright to genuinely enjoy something.

I'm with you on the Hobbit films. I watched the trailer, and was somewhat horrified by that, but gave the first film a chance. The only part I really like in it was the meta-scene where they show the battle of Azanulbizar. The rest of it was really kind of awful. I know that Peter Jackson didn't have his normal time to develop a project he picked up from someone else, but I thought the film was largely rubbish, and I'm glad I didn't punish myself with the other two.

I would say give the Amazon series a chance rather than flat out refusal. It's certainly better than the Hobbit trilogy. It's not perfect but it's entertaining enough. I'm a bit of a Tolkien purist but have enjoyed the first couple episodes with only a couple niggles.

I'm pretty sure you have to be quite self aware when you're a stand up comedian because of how instant any negative feedback can be on stage. As a matter of fact I doubt I've ever heard a comedian talk of themselves as a proper actor. The only one who comes to mind might have been Robin Williams but I'd say he was probably an actor before a comedian seeing how he went to Juilliard with Christopher Reeves and all.

@@MerkhVision Cariad's "LOTR nerdery" was about 30 seconds of the video. (that is, less than 20 percent of the length, a fifth, was about what the title says). And even then, her output here was really no "nerdery", just a couple of really common things. She may well be a LOTR nerd, and good on her if so, but this video hardly reflects that!
