I'm from St.Thomas, and I just noticed that your takeoff was at a time when some runway repairs were being done. The aircraft used the actual runway rather than the taxiway to get to the edge of the runway and did a 180 pivot to takeoff towards town.

Great Vid. I live next door in the British Virgin Islands but do 90% of my travels through St.Thomas,

The way the camera was held during take off makes this feel like an elevator, not a plane taking off.

Nice to see this video. I was the diving contractor doing underwater Film work and providing Engineering calculations on the revetment during the initial construction back in 1983 and 84 for 8 months. What a job. I stayed at the CARRIB RESORT. down the road a bit.

I know the 757s have been out of production for a while but that plane looks almost new.
@AmericanAirDFW10 жыл бұрын
The reason it looks that way is because it flew for Song while they were still around. Just recently, it was painted back into standard Delta colors, so the paintjob is a lot newer than many of DL's 757s.

Its probably a 15 year old plane but I'm sure it has another 30 years left of use. 10 more with an airline and 15 more with fedex or ups

Hey skbenergy I can remember reading recently that the Virgin Islands port authority had received a 9 million dollar grant from the U.S. federal aviation administration to repave the taxi way at the St Thomas airport. If you look at the end of the runway in this video you'll see the striping machine down there. So apparently the work has began.

I remember flying out of St Thomas,..it's awesome,..the runway is pretty short.

Tall Tales about the island: best friend's dad owned the largest dump truck on the island during the time they were moving the Eastern mountain to off the end of the runway extending it. His driver was dropping a load off the end, lost control and jumped out just in time to see it sink into the end of the runway. Time, resources, etc dictated that they just keep going. So when you land there, you are landing on a dump truck. Tale #2 December 1989 through Jan 1990 I helped put the flat roof on the new airport terminal. White guys who hired me got fired for fist fighting the day before I came down to take the job. Spent three days doing nothing, checked the caps that held down the flat roof that had already been done. I think I counted 173 that weren't fascend. Told the guy who came down from Florida to take over the job, he didn't seem concerned. No idea if it passed inspection. Tale #3: my family of 6 including 2 of my grandparents were scheduled on the American Airlines flight that crashed on the island in 1976 running into a Shell gas station at the end of the short runway. Mom had a dream, rescheduled us for a week earlier with all the work and changes made for dad's 3 stores to run for 2 weeks. We were on Magens when it crashed. Call went out for the 2nd most rare blood, AB-, which my father had. Dad said he wasn't taking time out from his vacation to donate blood. Read the karma my dad died to on that island 14 years after that crash, in this book: Would you like to read about real modern pirates based out of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands taking place in the end of the cocaine fueled 80s? www.amazon.com/dp/1653714360 or Kindle www.amazon.com/dp/B083C3DD19 (free with Ultimate).

was the Taxi Way closed or something ?
@AmericanAirDFW10 жыл бұрын
Apparently, because the US 757 ahead of us did the same backtaxi maneuver as us.
@calvinrovinescu616610 жыл бұрын
You can see an around 1:00 that the taxiway is somewhat barricaded so many it must have been closed.

That 400 Hz buzz can get annoying while waiting on the ground.
@calvinrovinescu61669 жыл бұрын
You can't hear that on this video or when actually on the plane unless the engines are off. What you are hearing is the hydraulics which in my opinion are far from annoying.
@JERRYinCHS8 жыл бұрын
You're hearing the two AC power drive hydraulic pumps. They're powered up just before push-back. Their noise fades away with the aerodynamic noise later on.
@TonyP92798 жыл бұрын
Cool! Didn't know what it was exactly. I usually notice it the most when they open the PA to make their announcements - like the PA system is not shielded.
