Seeing you DNF To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods makes me feel less conflicted with my own feelings towards the book. Got a proof back mid-2023, read a bit and haven't been able to pick it back up since. so far i've seen people talking about how much they love the cover when the publisher sent out a ton of ARCs to booktokers (so, mentioning the book before they read it) and then radio silence since so i feel like our experience might be the majority :/

I also got to read the ARC and I was very disappointed at the story. I can say you do understand the 731 being mentioned in the introduction by the author (something similar goes on in the book) but my main ick is (spoilers ahead) that the main character was just so stupid, so easily manipulated, etc and in the end she kinda forgives all the torturing the Agustus dude is putting her own family and people through and she is basically in love with him, even tho he is an absolute piece of sh*t... :( turned me off so much

I dont know if you've read these, but The Natural History of Dragons is a top notch series that has a similar vibe to the Emily Wilde books! I've been surprised for years that I haven't heard much from reviewers on it; maybe I'm just out of the loop! But it's about a woman in an alternate 1800s type era, where dragons are real but aren't the huge behemoths of our legends, or fantastical, they are just naturally evolved animals with a variety of species! The study of them has never been highly acclaimed, and more than that shes a woman in a time that mimics 1800s England, where women werent allowed to be scientists. The books are written as a series of memoirs, from an older her, about her life as an an explorer and scientist and how she got there. More than that, to me it was about a woman forging her own path in a world that didnt want her to shine, but she did it anyway! She's like Bones, a serious and intelligent woman who takes her work very seriously, but has moments of joy and wonder that any explorer would have!

Idk why but there’s something so funny to me about how the author of To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods wrote this beautiful author’s note about her family suffering at the hands of Japanese occupation but then proceeds to write a colonizer romance between a white Roman and someone from a Chinese inspired fantasy world 😂. The difference is so jarring that it almost feels like the author’s note was meant for a different book.

Totally agree on To Gaze Upon the Wicked Gods. The FMC's obsession with the MMC's green eyes, the fact that he never hides what he's doing and doesn't apologize for it, and she's still, oh yeah his green eyes, swoon. Not to mention it just wasn't very good even without the colonizer romance ick. I don't like romcoms so I had never read Ali, but I absolutely loved Bride, I am pretty obsessed with Misery and Lowe. Not enough vampires in Vampires of El Norte.

The cover of The English Understand Wool is by one of my FAVORITE artists. It's by Wayne Thiebaud. He was from NorCal and taught at a lot of unis and jr colleges around NorCal, I think my mom even took a class from him at Sacramento City jr college in the 60s. His stuff isnt exclusively "pop art", I'd say it's a bit more sophisticated than that especially with his color choices, and he did a lot of landscapes too. But I think in general his most well known pieces would be considered in the realm of "pop art". He has this one of an upside-down ice cream cone made into a clown, that I'm more than sure is inspired by Gunther's Ice Cream in Sacramento, lol (for those that don't know this reference, it's kinda highlighted in the movie Lady Bird)

I personally was fine with you having the books you read in reading order but i can see why someone would want all the ARCs together at the beginning or end if thats what their lookin for. You do what feels best for you! Its a shame that To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods didnt end up so good, i figured it was gonna be poralizing cause of the "romance" (which from what ive seen from reviews/the sequels titles it seems to be going for a Shadow and Bone type thing where the "badboy" is the villain and the MC gets with a childhood friend but the publisher didnt understand that and it could have been clearer in the writing) but it sounded interesting and from how you described it it really sounds like it could have used another round of edits. Heck i think this could have worked better as an Adult book where you can focus more on the darker elements/the MCs flaws without having to worry about a moral or aclimizing to YA tropes. Maybe i'll check it out from the library sometime but im not in a rush. Onto better things im glad Vampires of El Norte was good! Thats another one that the publisher i hear didnt market well (iirc it was marketed as a horror like The Hacienda and not a paranormal romance so people going in expecting the former were let down) but ive heard great things about it, the romance sounds cute and im eyeing some oneshots to check out once im done with We Free The Stars (someone below recommended The Fox Wife and that sounds really good) so ill check it out sometime! Im also interested in the Emily Wilde books since they seem to be some of the only modern books that write fae like actual fae and not hot people with wings, but ive heard enough poralizing things on them that im not quite jumping on them. Hopefully you have less DNFs next month!

No but same on To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods. I finished it, and I was genuinely so disappointed with it. Especially as someone who’s Korean and Chinese. The book was so weirdly paced, like they do a time skip in the middle that makes no sense, and the MLI is *incredibly* and aggressively racist. It’s also a bit weird because the ‘fantasyland name’ Pangu, is the name of a Southern Chinese god? But Manchuria’s right above Korea.

Hi cari. I love your channel, and you are one of a few that convinced me to make my own channel. You said you wanted to branch out into more genres. So I would like to recommend a memoir to you! It’s “they called me a lioness, a Palestinian girl’s fight to freedom” and I think you will like it. It’s co written by Ahed Tamimi, who grew up in a small village in Palestine. Where she started joining marches to free their country since she was a child. The story talks about all that has happened to her, including getting arrested for slapping an Israeli soldier. Ahed Tamimi has actually gone viral with a few videos when she was 11 years old. It’s a rough book. But I think it’s a beautiful and important read!!!! Thank you for your great videos❤

Okay, I hope I am not super late. I just finished reading To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods right now and I just have so many issues with it. First of all, let me just say three things: 1. I really wanted to like this book 2. There are spoilers ahead cause we are talking. 3. These are all my opinions and I'm open to change, so please if you don't agree with something, feel free to let me know. One, the lack of world building. So, I don't know whether this is a common thing, but I usually have a hard time reading the world building section of fantasy because, even though I know it is an important part, I much rather would like to read the actual story. This book made me appreciate those long paragraphs of world information which I used to be forced to sit through in other fantasy books because, Good Lord, I had such a hard time imagining stuff here. When Ruying was talking about the various other kingdoms, I was sitting there like, damn, I would really like a map right now like how Poppy War by R F Kuang did. That made reading PW, so much easier, especially the wars and the battle strategies which various characters spoke about. It would also have been a very good way for readers to keep up with the various Empires. I hope they include a map in the second or third book. Second, I disliked the character building or lack their of. Yang Ruying kept on and on about how much she likes her sister and her friend Taoha, especially when Taoha is killed, and I'm sitting there like, I don't care. I don't know any of these people, Taoha was in, maximum, 2 scenes. All I know about her was from Ruying POV how good and brave she is. But why won't you show that to me? That would have also give the author a chance to expand the world and build it, hence bringing back my first point. Ru kept going on and on about how much she loves her family and all, but the scenes with her family and friends, other than Baihu and Meiya (to some extent), felt so hollow. But I really liked how the Emperor of Sihai's dynamic and death were handled. That was good, I felt something when the Emperor died. This brings me to my Third point. Some of the informations given to us felt so repetitive. Like I get it, you are in a bad spot and I know what's at stake, but why am I being fed this information again and again? Like I actually love when certain informations are given to me twice in books because I am a forgetful person but not at every step. Fourth, I just cannot cheer for Antony as a love interest. At this point only a miracle can save him in my eyes. I hope that miracle happens in Book 2. I know totally random, but his and Ruying's dymanic kind of reminds me of The Darkling and Alina from The Grishaverse by Leigh Bardugo. But somehow Antony felt worse to me. I had some love for The Darkling at the end, but I have no feelings for Antony, UNLESS, again, some miracle happens in Book 2. Fifth, the stakes were set so high but the actions and the stuff that happened around the stakes did not at all feel climactic and grand, if you all know what I mean. The things that were happening did not meet the height stakes which were set. Last, and this is just me being very nitpicky, you made her an assassin for crying out loud. Why didn't you show how she got into people's houses or her in action as an assassin? I was really looking forward to that. Like what are you scared of? But I must say, the ending was good. It got me hooked for the next book. It is just her debut so I really hope and also I'm sure that her writing will improve as it is not bad, not bad at all. But anyway, these are my thoughts.

If you like a non-stereotypical main female character like Bones, I recommend Vespertine. The main character reads a bit autistic, like not recognizing social cues very well, and really enthusiastic about the job other girls find creepy and gross. There were some genuinely laugh out loud moments.

Read The Blueprint and Lore of The Wild too. Agree so much on LOTW and it seems many agree. The Blueprint messed me up, it’s an incredible book I cannot stop thinking about.

I need to talk to someone about Veronica Roth...I was all up in the dystopian trend as a young person and loved the Divergent series, despite its flaws. And now, as an adult, I find out that Roth has just kept writing but I've never seen her other books talked about. I dnf-ed Chosen Ones but I'll probably come back to it at some point. And then I read the Carve the Mark duology and liked those but have literally never come across someone else who has read them.

Oh, I get what you mean about the younger sounding writing of Lore of the Wilds. I felt the same about The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches. The writing just did not work for me. I love middle grade and YA, but when I pick up an adult fiction, I expect it to sound like an adult fiction. Edit to add: the author of the witch book is predominantly a MG author, so it makes sense why she would write like that. But somebody needs to tell her that simply including swear words and references to sex and keeping the same formula as MG doesn't make it an adult book. Or not. Plenty of people loved the book. I wanted to, but yeah, just didn't work for me.

Just finished lore of the wilds and I will say, if the enchanted library is what’s getting you interested, you should probably pass on this book, it’s only relevant for a few chapters. Also, the YA style writing with adult content increases dramatically. I was personally very let down by the book, but if you’re an avid Romantasy reader, it might still hit for you!
