The thing that I love about Caricatures, is that no matter how exaggerated the features are, the faces are immediately recognizable.

this is good stuff! I'm an amateur painter/artist. There was a caricaturist near my booth last I was setup recently. He had a huge poster showing his previous customers. There's a difference between exaggeration & downright insulting. Anyhow, this guy had demos of his asian customers and... it was just clearly racist! ...yet, he had an image of himself as well, he definitely made himself out better than his clients. . . & they were holding his work in the photos, some of them def didn't look happy.

on the subject of the human average: im glad he at least acknowledges the inaccuracy in using a generic white male head as humanity's "average". while it's not necessarily a bad starting point in exaggerating the features of other races, i can only imagine what will become of models who stray further and further from whiteness lol... i'll express that it's not necessarily that easy to come up with a new generic model for one's own race because averaging out features is a rather mathematical process that takes an extremely well trained artist to pull off! all of my anatomy books use the same generic face structure model because these white guys have had the luxury to borrow it from one another (and ultimately, like, the greeks???romans???michelangelo???), but little has been elaborated on the generic facial structure on other races...in general...in western culture, at least. thats why i was impressed to come across the "asaro head", which genuinely looks to represent all variations of race and gender. it's a little bit more of an abstract model than the one in the video, but it has the potential to work like a charm for whites and nonwhites alike.

Not a fan of videos which are basically trailers for Paid content but are marketed as "How to". The course is obviously high quality but just put teaser of paid content in the title. There are really good quality free tutorials available too but those get pushed backwards because of these.
@CourtJones
@CourtJones 7 жыл бұрын
All of the essential information of the course is in these free KZbin videos. I explain my concepts fully in them. The premium versions of the lessons go into more detail in some areas, and there are a ton of narrated example videos in the premium course to help put the lessons into context. So if you're serious about improving your caricature skills, the premium course is definitely recommended. But we rely ENTIRELY on income from the premium videos to make these free ones. It takes a lot of people and equipment/software to make these videos. If we didn't have the premium students, these free lessons would not exist at all. Just thought I would give a little context.

Much like music, it's best to work on everything at the same time. You'll find that learning one subject will actually inform and influence your understanding of a different subject. If you only isolate and work on one thing at a time until you "perfect" it, you'll stunt your growth, create unappealing un-unified art, and probably never get to where you want to go artistically. Throw success out the window and just concentrate on learning everything you can about everything you can as much as possible.

Is it still allowed to make caricatures? an artist could very easily get blamed for making something look racially stereotypic in today's politically correct society.
@stoneheart8231
@stoneheart8231 7 жыл бұрын
you can do it without being racist tho??? like he said, the "average face" is different all over the world. if you're going to make a caricature of a foreign celebrity, you need to be familiar with the norm in their country. caricatures are super popular in korea for example. it only gets racist when you view white people as superior and judge everyone else by how well they conform to western beauty standards
@danfors1333
@danfors1333 7 жыл бұрын
zoinks! If I see ten different caricature paintings from an unknown artist then I can practically calculate with high accuracy what the artist himself look like. It's easier said than done to adapt to the norm of a specific country. I'd say almost all caricature artists subconsciously use their own face as a norm because that's the face they see in the mirror every day. I myself have a small tendency to draw faces slightly skew and I don't notice it until I see it mirror flipped. The reason I often make this mistake is because my own face i slightly skew but I never notice this in the mirror, only when I see myself on photos.

Dan Fors well, if someone can't stop projecting themselves into their art, then i don't think caricature is the right way to go... just my opinion.
@allisonthabit7639
@allisonthabit7639 7 жыл бұрын
+Dan Fors You're right that the artists will put themselves into everything they make, especially when drawing faces. In psychology, there is a well-known phenomenon called the other-race effect, which is the tendency to recognize one's own race more accurately than the face of the other races. We also recognize small differences in faces of people of our own race more easily than people of different races. I don't think that's any reason to just call it quits for caricature though. As long as the artist is aware of this tendency and properly accounts for it by doing more research and critically analyzing what they make, they shouldn't have to worry as much about creating something racist. After all, if they really thought something might look racist, they could just.... get another opinion, ideally of someone who belongs to that race/minority group. Or even a few opinions. Instead of worrying about "getting called racist" artists should instead worry about actually being racist, and take the time and effort to actually do their job right. All that this "politically correct society" demands is actually buckling down and getting your facts right.
