Nissan Note 2006, bought at around 50,000km traded in for another one (only 2009) at 361,000km, no transmission issues whatsoever. That was a lot of long hot miles, proper, timely oil and transmission fluid changes plus sparkplugs etc. Got around 100,000km from one set of front brake pads. Took the time to understand how cvt works internet videos were excellent, and drove it that way. Found it a very relaxing and rewarding experience, even over demanding terrain with two three, or once four hitchhikers and their backpacks crammed in. Follow the Designer's handbook, guys. And far more importantly, the same applies to your own body.

As a mechanic, I can tell you these are our #1 money maker in the shop. Its a golf cart technology that was implemented into 4000 lbs vehicles. They can be reliable to a degree if you drive like my 80 year old grandma. Slow acceleration, speed limit and no sudden acceleration. The problems surfaces when people drive them like traditional gear transmission. They're not built to handle that. Car manufacturers like them because they are cheaper, lighter and get slightly better mpg so they can advertise for it. I personally would not buy a car with a CVT.

I have a 2017 Honda with the CVT. There is a little lag when starting out, but not that bad. I also have a 2023 Lexus and they improved the transmission by adding an electrical assist. There is no noticeable lag, and if you floor it, it takes off immediately. I rented a 2022 Nissan with a CVT and it was junk. You could feel the car slowing and accelerating while keeping the gas pedal steady. Sometimes when coasting to a stop, it felt like the transmission was holding back the car. I was glad to return it to the airport.

CVT requires careful maintenance which is to change the fluid every 30k km to 50k km the change must be complete with filters, another is the oil temperature must be below 90°C to have derabilidad, bad for the cvt which does not have a belt replacement part This means you have to change all gears and depending on the country you live in, the cost of a new one is very expensive.

I'm not impressed at what's for sale out there these days for new vehicles. Turbos and CVT's, AWD/4WD systems, cylinder deactivation, VVT and poorly designed timing systems, low tension piston rings/oil burning, and complicated hybrid systems that are all maintenance nightmares. And if that's not bad enough, the electronic monitoring of your vehicle and how you drive in the name of "safety", the disabling of functions on your car unless you pay for a subscription (Toyota remote start) are becoming commonplace. You can keep it all.

i have a question: i've heard that most of the failures on cvt is on the belt, and the preventive action is to take care the transmission oil. based on what i learned that this is PUSH belt, and based on kzbin.info/www/bejne/hoKrh39-bc-JmZo, is the cause of the failure often that the moveable halves did not move simultaneously, causing the 2 rings of belts slips out and made the links (elements) fall off? i've always assumed that the belts break because they were overstressed by the pulley
@CDKAZ06884 ай бұрын
If pulleys are not moving simultaneously there is an oil pressure problem. Likely due to people not changing the fluid on proper intervals, and techs not doing their job and changing the filters.

This video can also explain why CVTs are unreliable and prone to premature failure. The clutch packs and planetary gears used in the reverse gear mechanism is what regular automatics use to achieve all the different gear ratios, and to shift between them. They are clutch surfaces packed tightly together, constantly soaked in oil (tranny fluid) and only 'slip' for a fraction of a second when the transmission changes gears. Planetary gear sets are how different gear ratios are achieved. In order to have a 'constantly changing ratio' you cannot have solid meshed gears, hence the steel belt and piston pulleys. Problem is, a steel belt is exactly that, a flexible belt-drive. And because the pulleys are constantly changing ratios (or 'gears'), the belt and pulleys are constantly under tremendous pressure and wear. Metal on metal friction on multiple surfaces is also constant 100% of the time. And like in a regular automatic, the 'slippage' is when the gear ratio changes. But unlike in a regular automatic, the gear ratio is _constantly_ changing! So friction and metal on metal wear is also happening _constantly!_ And under extremely high loads. The only, and I mean the *ONLY,* benefit to a CVT over a conventional automatic is a tiny increase in fuel economy. And most of that is simply due to the fact that CVTs are lighter than conventional transmissions. At the expense of constant metal on metal friction, excessive wear, and early failure. Not to mention how car makers went with them because they don't care about the used car market. They don't care that there are now literally millions of good used cars, save for their bad CVTs, which makes an otherwise perfectly good used car a total loss. Because car manufacturers also don't sell CVT rebuild kits to customers or shops because they'd rather you buy a brand new car. It's deliberate planned obsolescence on such a scale that it should be investigated as a violation of anti-trust laws. CVTs not only should be completely abandoned as a failed experiment, they never should have been pursued in the first place. And plenty of engineers know this..
