Whenever I heard a car needs a new thermostat I never knew it was an actual device that regulated the amount of coolant moving in the system. I just thought it was a sensor or something. Learned a lot from this video

It's actually necessary. Otherwise you'd be switching from hot coolant to cold coolant instantly. Shocking and warping the metal.

I was randomly interested to see how a radiator worked and how it was critical for a cooling system. I'm glad I found this video so I can learn by visual on why parts as small as a spring are so critical. Also, it only sucks that my 2010 prius don't have a radiator cap for either easier diagnostic of gasket problems or easier coolant change

Here in Uganda 🇺🇬 East Africa, we have witnessed a practice where the thermostat is completely removed for the engine to operate normally, in most cases due to high temperatures in the region, a car that maintains it will be heating up often. But once it removed, the car will operate normally. 😅😢
@SpicyRoll-m4r8 ай бұрын
Removing thermostat is a bad idea engine has a specific temperature to operate efficiently that's the job of thermostat by adjusting the temperature that is perfect for the engine..

Thermostats usually are at the highest point on the engine and open to allow hot coolant to go to the top of the radiator. The hot coolant causes the wax in the thermostat to melt and allow the spring to push the thermostat open. Thus, the mechanism of the thermostat must be in the hot coolant. Illustration at (5:30) shows the bypass (short circuit) coolant to cover the wax unit. What car is illustrated here that thermostat is at the output of the radiator? Thanks.

Very clearly explained and presented. Thank you! One question: Is it just me, or are the fins on the water pump backwards at 1:19 to 1:25? I would think the fins would be more efficient in the opposite direction of what's shown.
