My baby girl was diagnosed CHF and given 6 months. She made it through summer but in last month showed no desire to live. She got a little sicker; vomitting. She refused to eat/drink/take treats/walk...She spent her last days sulking and just watching me (making sure Im not leaving). I knew she was suffering. She's gone now and I'm pretty lost; after having been nursemaid 24/7. To those of you going through it, TAKE LOTSA VIDEOS OF YOUR FUR BABIES!!! You'll be glad you did!

I have a Havaneese, almost 12. Took him to his Cardiologist after his first visit 1 1/2 yrs ago. Doctor put him on four medications but did not suggest the vitamins and supplements. I see that you didn’t go that route. I was very reluctant because of the side effects that medications can have. Don’t know how long I’ll have my boy Diego but I’m very great full to have him in my life. Bless you.

❤ hi! I know this vid was made over a year ago but I just found it. I’m hoping that sweet twinks is still doing well. I’m so grateful for your great advice. It’s so comforting to know that I’m not alone! I’ve been searching for a good holistic vet in my area so I can try to offset these conventional meds. I will-look into the supps you are using asap bc we are getting higher bun results from the heart meds and that terrifying. You have given me a day of hope during this bleak experience! I do have one tip for you. I just starting going to a vet nutritionist and she says that it’s better for the kidneys to have more than 2 meals a day. Having 3-4 smaller meals help keep the stress load on kidneys to a-minimum. Hope that helps. Would love to do you wit more detailed questions if your amenable. Lmk! Kisses to Twinkie!! ❤

Hi! Yes Twinkie is still here, this month marks 5 years with CHF. He also had a high BUN level and the culprit was Lasix. I put him on denamarin and lowered his Lasix and it went back to normal. Don’t listen to the statistics just take it one day at a time! Or the black cloud will follow you everywhere. Twinkie will be 17 in December and I’m hoping to have another holiday with him 🙏 he’s getting super old and it’s sad but I just try to remember I did EVERYTHING I possibly could for him and I’m grateful to still have him. How do i get brutal bursts of extreme sadness to go away so that i can enjoy her and work on getting way stronger than i am now...does anyone have any tricks or suggestions that have helped you cope w this effectively? I am going through the same thing. The vet gave Twinkie 6 months to a year. In the beginning I could barely sleep at night and the feeling of doom lingered every day and night. It was and is like a nightmare. Even though every new day I have with Twinkie is a celebration the closer it gets to a year, which is this August, I am feeling more and more sad. I did hear of dogs living with CHF for as long as 4 years but Twinkies case is very severe so as much as I wish he can live more years, not knowing is the hardest part. One thing that helped me cope was to reach out to other people going through the same thing. Another is doing as much research as possible and seeing the Holisic Vet helped a lot to. She gave me some hope that with the suppliments and vitamins he can live a longer life. What we feed them is also a big part of keeping them as healthy as possible. I am having a phone meeting with a dog Nutritionist on July 11th and I would love to share with everyone about what I learn from her. When it comes to activities, I don't do any with Twinkie because even a short walk makes him cough and breath heavy. I carry him everywhere and have a strict routine with him that he is used to and routine seems to help. Just remember as sad as you are, your not alone, so reaching out, like you are, may help a little. I myself am going through the same thing so thank you for commenting my video!

Rob Hughes what’s worked for me is just taking it one day at a time and spending as much time as I can with her. As far as activities, I just take my Cavi for short walks a couple times a day especially since being on the diuretic, that’s the most exercise she gets as I don’t want her to exert herself. It’s ok if you let out a good cry, it’s all part of the grieving process. Just cherish every moment, I understand how hard this is, I’m going through it too as well, and it’s painful.

As far as how to deal with it... ya I couldn’t sleep... every time I woke up I was expecting the worse... I personally have just said lots of loving things to him so he knows how much I love and cherish him.. and although it’s hard I know it will happen and I’m actually as ok.. with that as I can be... I don’t want to keep him here if he’s suffering and I’m really worried about the meds taking a really hard toll on him.. but just listen to your dog... they will letcha know how they are feeling... just cherish them... there’s not enough kisses and cuddles in a day... lol... thx for sharing your story...

Wow I am so lucky to have my baby healthy for this long 🙏 A vet told me just from listening to his heart and taking an ex ray that he had CHF but I didn’t put him on any meds cuz the vet said it would be for life & meds can cause side effects… The next few vets said his heart sounds healthy… it’s been 6 years since the first vet.. Once in a while he has had a Syncope. I just found out what that is today… I’ve tried to tell my vets but they all said it sounded like he was having a nightmare. I cook the best food for my dog & he’s well taken care of. I’m giving him human vitamin e & fish oil as well. I put the oil directly into his food from the capsule.

which brand vitamin e do you give him? Some vets say my dog has an enlarged heart and other vets say they don't see an enlarged heart. I give her fish oil but I don't know which brand of vitamin e to trust because I hear that tocopherols are not beneficial. Tocotrienols are supposedly the only benifical part of vitamin e.

Want to start off by thanking you for caring enough about your animal to go the lengths and also for sharing & being transparent to help other dog owners like me who are dealing with CHF. Currently I am about 6 months in with my 11 year old Yorkie Rambo. In the beginning we first began noticing coughing and like your Twinkie we found Rambo has the mitral valve variation of CHF, extremely enlarged heart, and about a level 5 murmur. Rambo was put on enalapril, furosemide, pimobendan, and spironolactone. After even about a month of those combined medicine we noticed one day specifically Rambo could not even move and was falling over (different from his syncope fainting episodes) and we rushed him into the vet to find Rambo was in progressed stages of acute kidney failure from the medications, after a 3 day miracle Rambo recovered from his kidney episode and was then taken off of spironolactone which they say is a experimental drug still brought into veterinary medicine due to its success with people with CHF however it seems to wreak havoc on dogs. Two supplements that Rambo was put into are AZODYL and also EPAKITIN both for kidneys which have seemed to work wonders for Rambo so I wish someone or even the vet had suggested we give him some kind of kidney support sooner before he nearly died of kidney failure. Both those supplements are very easy to use and can be ordered off things like Chewy & 1800petmeds! I did tons of research on not only CHF but also I was now fighting a kidney battle and I found that raw green tripe (sounds disgusting but yes really) is a super food in dogs that can support kidneys. You can find it online in treats but I personally found it from the Amish in Wisconsin (I’m from Chicago) so I cut up the raw cow stomach and put it over rice for my dog but dogs love the stinky smell so much they would eat it raw even though my dog has never had raw meat prior to this in his life and he is a very picky eater but it is said to be packed with nutrients! I do also give my dog CBD oil because it does help appetite but also a huge problem for us is keeping Rambo calm because he is an excitable dog so once his heart rate gets going he begins coughing or even has an episode where nothing can reverse that at that point besides excess furosemide. Rambo is also on Trazadone which is a mild sedative even used in humans dating back agesss and it has seemed to greatly help him remain calm, balance his heart rate/blood pressure and also give him more restful nights. CBD is said to also be a vasodilator so it helps blood vessels in the heart and muscles so his heart can pump easier! I started giving him something after tons of reviews online called Petwellbeing Young at Heart which is said to help heart function but I’m just reaching for options at this point because I want to make him as comfortable as possible and many said it helped with coughing as well. I recently ordered coenzyme Q as well as dandelion leaf extract so that we can have more natural options ontop of his medicine because as this progresses I hate to just keep increasing doses as doctor recommendations have a few times hurt Rambo and no one seems to consider the homeopathic & holistic options as much as we concerned pet owners and now self renowned google doctors we have become. I also read something about Liquid Oxygen online which is a mineral or nutrient that can be added to water so that it increases oxygen in the blood but have yet to try it but ofcourse worth looking into. I’m so glad that Twinkie is holding in and soldiering on just like my boy! And I am especially glad that they have as attentive owners as us because I have heard many people even vets tell me to put him down but aside from Rambo’s very scary episodes & ER visits (which have put me thousands of dollars in debt), rambo is still such a happy boy. I hope that we can continue to have success and miraculously maybe even improvement with our fur babies. Can you tell me how many times a day Twinkie receives furosemide? It is said to only last about 6 hours and Rambo is on it every 12 hours which concerns me especially when he starts showing discomfort closer to his next dose which is why I ordered organic dandelion (you need the leaf specifically as the root doesn’t have the same diuretic properties) Also, can you explain to me how the humidifier helps? I have read that before however since humidity is bad for CHF I always worried that a humidifier would make things worse! I am also rather curious about the doggy Viagra now and how that has improved your dogs episodes because Rambo’s seizures have been horrifying some even happening 3 times within 30 minutes until I had to rush him to the vet but as you know even oxygen alone is nearly $1000 so each ER visit just drains me so much I am so nervous I won’t be ready for the next emergency. How do you handle an episode and is there any way to calm a dog and their respiratory rate? When it comes to some medications I hide them in a small ball of vanilla Haagen Daz icecream and my dog literally swallows it. Dairy isn’t supposed to be the best for dogs especially sick ones but our doctor suggested it actually and said since Haagen daz is a high fat icecream that it could better support him and absorbing the medications as well however make sure the pimobendan is received on an empty stomach! Thanks again! Sending my best wishes for you & Twinkie and also best of luck for us in our fight against CHF with our babies!

Your welcome! Thank you for commenting my video, I really want to do whatever I can to help other people going through this. When I first got the news about Twinkie it was heartbreaking. I felt helpless. Especially after I asked the vet if there is anything special I can feed him to help the CHF and she said no, just give him whatever he wants. Don't get me wrong I am extremely grateful for vets but they are a totally different business from homeopathy. So I needed to figure out a good balance between medicine and holistic by finding answers elsewhere. It was really hard to find info about CHF at first until I found groups on fb and went to a holistic vet. I also talked to a dog nutritionist who gave me a ton of info about Twinkies diet. I made a video with the foods I'm feeding him now and I can post the link here in case you haven't seen it. 4 months after I started his new diet, his echocardiogram showed that the left side of his very enlarged heart actually shrunk back to it's normal size! He hadn't been coughing either so we haven't even been using the humidifier lately, I wondered if the humidity was ok too but it really helped him when he was coughing more. He used to be on spironolactone but started losing his appetite so we took him off of that one. Twinkie also had an enlarged liver so they put him on denamarin and he just recently finished the bottle and had his levels checked and it is back to normal. He is on furosimide twice a day along with pemobendan, enalapril and Sildenafil. The Sildenafil (viagra) is for his pulminary hypertention. He started that medication about a year ago and hasn't fainted sinc🤞 His last episode was December of 2018 and we went to the holisic vet soon after and he has improved since then. But we still take it one day at a time. I always have in the back of my mind that we might have to rush to the vet at any time so we have his bag packed and are ready to run out the door if needed. The emergency vet is indeed very expensive so I have care credit but the interest is very high. I did hear of people putting their dog in the bath to calm their respiratory rates but I never did that and I'm wondering if it would stress Twinkie out more. He also hated his pills so now that I give him liquid it's a lot easier because now he can eat when he wants and doesn't associate his food with meds. If the ice cream is working I'm sure it's fine since it's a tiny bit. I used to give Twinkie his meds in cream cheese and I know how hard it can be to get them to take their pills. Thank you again for reaching out and good luck with Rambo! He is still young and can likely keep improving since your doing so much for him! I love hearing other story's about this because it gives me hope and helps others going through the same thing❤

Thank you so much! That's good your taking your baby to a cardiologist soon, they will be able to give you a much more detailed report on her condition. When it comes to food though your right about that! It's a totally different profession. So taking your dog to a traditional vet along with a holistic vet gives it a much better balance since they need meds for their heart but the meds take a toll on their bodys so they need supplements, vitamins and special foods to give it a good balance. Twinkies case was so severe he was only given 6 months to a year and now it's a year and half later and hes doing better now then when he was first diagnosed. In case you didn't see my latest video on the recipes I feed Twinkie I will post it here in the comments. Good luck with your baby!! ❤

Once you see a cardiologist and Mr. Pickles gets an echocardiogram they will know more of what’s going on in there. But don’t let the statistics get you down, this August will be 2 years for Twinkie and he actually improved from his new diet, supplements, vitamins and meds. @@katiekatez84 Thank you for that. Mr. Pickles passed away on Thursday evening. I checked him out of his primary, was there to receive oxygen but on the way home, he was in distress so i took him to the ER. After being checked out, i was told he was in grave condition and they expected him to pass away in the next 12 hours. They were in the middle of telling me that they can hospitalize him or take him home. Of course, i was sobbing and in distraught as he was fine when we left the vet's office. Not even 2 mins later they run in and say he's crashing so I needed to come say goodbye to him. I ran to him held his paw and told him I hoped he had a great life. He drew his last breath about a min later. The docs believe his heart was so damaged that the valve to his lungs was not closing or was ruptured leading to him not being able to pump blood to his lungs to pick up oxygen. Even if they put him on oxygen at that time, he would have been in so much pain and distress. Im still devastated as his primary and I were just talking about putting him on the long term treatment to chf. I was all on board. I wasnt going to give up on him. I lost my bestfriend but i know someday we will be united. Thank you for reading this long story but most of all, thank you for helping to bring awareness about CHF. Only if I knew what to look for about 2 years ago, he would still be alive today but there's no regrets as I'm trying to make the best of this; I'm trying to bring awareness to CHF on my fb so my friends are always aware of coughs and gum color.

I’m really glad Twinkie put on a pound! This is no doubt thanks to your loving nursing that you are doing. My dog’s appetite has been poor in the morning but at least she will eat well done scrambled eggs and gluten free whole grain bread. I’ve found that the eggs have to be really well done so they get brown marks on them. It takes away from the nauseating smell of undercooked eggs. I think the scrambled eggs are better tolerated than other forms of animal protein for my baby because they don’t have a nauseating smell. Well done they have an appetizing smell. Thanks for including links to the products. What were the doses your holistic vet recommended, please? Thanks for suggesting getting meds in liquid form. The only challenge is Keeping syringe sterile. I’ll have to try that for my dog because I worry that one day she will stop letting me give her the furosemide. Love to you and Twinkie!
@katiekatez84 Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! The good thing about liquid meds is they send you syringes when you get the meds in the mail so after a while you’ll have so many and you can just rotate them. Twinkie will definitely eat something I cook for him over anything else. But he also likes a specific soft food I get him and it’s low sodium. Thank you for the comment and keep me posted on your baby if you get a chance ❤️

@@katiekatez84 thank you Katie. Sadly, my dog is now with the angels. She went to Heaven on December 26th. The emergency clinic tried to save her but she didn’t make it. She had left ventricular congestive heart failure. Thank you so much for giving me hope and providing suggestions for diet and supplements. Hani wasn’t getting sufficient medical care. I kept taking her to vets but the care was subpar. The cardiologists in my area were all booked and I could only find availablilty with regular vets who didn’t really know what they were doing. She was 91 in human years. My heart is devastated. She was my everything. I’m so grateful that Twinkie is doing so well and he is getting such great care. Also, the night she died, before I took her into the emergency clinic, I tried supplemental oxygen from paw print. It didn’t work, or the flow rate was so low I couldn’t feel any air and it didn’t work. However, even if it had, I’m not sure it would have saved her. Hani was in the oxygen chamber at the emergency clinic and they flooded her system with furosemide but she didn’t respond to either. My advise to your viewers is to be really assertive about getting your dog into see a cardiologist if they are booked out for a long time. Regular vets will often say that cardiology is out out of their scope of practice and won’t touch cardiovascular medications. Hugs!

My poor little Duchie passed away on January 24th. My husband raced to my work, but before he did he told her he was going to get mommy. When I got home she was exhaling fluid from her lungs. When she saw me she wagged her tail and climbed in my arms. She died an hour later. I will never forget that she really waited for me, the love of my life.

I’ve been constantly worried and up with her for the past week to try and calm her down during her episodes she has . I’ve been prescribed the tablets “upcard” and have upped her vetmedin to 3 times a day as per my vets instructions but nothing was mentioned about the diet side of things or the supplements . Im going to do everything possible like you are to try and help my fur baby . I’ve made a shopping list based on all of your suggestions. Hi! Thank you so much! I’m glad my video was helpful. Twinkie was given 6 month to a year to live and he’s going on 4 years now so I really do think balancing the meds with supplements and diet really do help! Also if your dog has fluid in her lungs I’m curious why the vet didn’t give her lasix. Sometimes meds just need to be adjusted to get them stable again. I’m sorry she’s having episodes at night, that’s so scary! I’ve had countless sleepless nights with Twinkie counting his breaths or watching him breathe to make sure he’s ok. Good luck in your journey and I hope you find the perfect regimen for your baby 🙏❤️

I have a question for you, so my dog I had to switch him off of raw frozen raw food and I have them on the pets table but I saw what you said about the legumes the peas and lentils. Does that actually contribute to the CHF he does have CHF he’s 14 years old. I have him also on a lot of different supplements and he seems to be doing better but now I’m concerned about the food can you answer that for me? Thank you so much and I’m praying for your little boy they’re so adorable. All your dogs are so adorable. I have two of them myself. I have a girl that she’s 10 and she’s very healthy. Thank God.
@katiekatez845 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! Twinkie passed away in December of 2023, but he made it over 5 years with CHF, and no he didn’t have the type of CHF that legumes could cause, that would be Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) which means the legumes can block the function of taurine, but it doesn’t necessarily mean your dog has a deficiency if they eat some peas or legumes, though a taurine supplement wouldn’t hurt either way. If they are doing good on their food now then maybe stick with it and switch it up over time if you want, it’s always good to give them some variety especially when they get older and start getting picky. Good luck with your baby’s and update in the future if you remember, thanks for reaching out! 🙏❤️

He only gets a tiny bit because hes so small, I would see what the label says how much per pound. The milk thisle is a dropper and so is the omega-3 and he gets up to the first line. The canine cardiac support is a powder that comes with a tiny scooper and he gets one scoop. On days I give him fish I don't give him the omega-3. Twinkie is now on denamarin instead of milk thisle because his liver is a little enlarged so the vet gave him that but when it runs out I'm switching back to milk thisle because supplements work best when rotated. And don't over do it either! If you skip a day every once in a while it should be fine but that's just my personal experience and you should check with a holistic vet if you can to make sure your dog gets the appropriate amount.

My dog had blood in her chest cavity and her culture and blood test came came back all negative… they said her heart sounded great BUT now after her chest tap her breathing is pretty rough she breast about 35-45 per min. She hasn’t had a echo test and I’m thinking she has chf even though they said her heart is okay… it’s just all this is so expensive she is eating and drinking but her breathing is rough her hole body will jolt when she breaths…
@katiekatez842 жыл бұрын
Her breaths per minute shouldn’t be higher then 30, if Twinkie was in that situation I would give him lasix, if that didn’t work quickly I would take him to the emergency vet. And they would put him in oxygen and give him a lasix shot. Which we’ve been through before years ago. Did the vet give any medication? I have a friend who went through the same thing, the vet said it was kennel cough and a year later found out it’s CHF, so I think it could be difficult to know for sure without an echo. If you have no lasix on hand and can’t go to the vet then you can try dandelion rout it is like a natural dietetic but there is no guarantee this would help during an episode, over 30 breaths per minute means your dog is struggling to breath and you probably have to act fast as it can get worse quickly. Please update me if you can 🙏

Also just cause her heart was ok I’m not sure why they didn’t prescribe a diuretic at the time they saw blood in her lungs, that blood can fill more and more and even fill her stomach and drown her. Weather it’s a heart issue or a leaking valve or whatever else chest related it can be, any liquid in the lungs needs to be cleared out. I’m so confused why they let you leave the vet with blood in her lungs.

@@ameliabiggers443 My baby (12yo maltese) was diagnosed 01/12/21. 1st pneumonia which was cleared...then vet informed heart was a little larger than normal. Since having pneumonia for 3 wks the coughing continues. Currently prescribed Lasix and cough med. Did ur baby cough a lot, if so, what did they prescribe. My boy was prescribed 2 different types. I forgot the names(@ work now) but sometimes they don't seem effective. Vet hopes the lasix will reduce some fluid around heart which will decrease the coughing episodes. It's been 3 days on lasix. I've ordered coenzyme q10 and cbd oil to use in addition to vet meds. He is so loved and I'm doing everything can to prolong further decline. Right now his heart is at a "little enlarged".. I'm trying to fight against it becoming really enlarged.

Please check before you make this type of videos. Dogs with CHF should not give fish oil or high in fatty acid. For liquid meds u just need to have it compounded.

Do you have any sources saying that omega-3 is bad for CHF. My holistic vet and dog nutritionist both highly recommended it. I can’t find anything online that states it is bad in fact I just read that it can decrease heart issues by 10 percent. I’m not saying your wrong I really want to know more about it. I’ve been giving it to Twinkie for almost 3 years and he’s still here even though he was given 6 months to a year but I’m interested in knowing the bad side effects it can have. Thank you!

You’re wrong about the survival rate of the surgery it’s 94% stop spewing bs that you haven’t confirmed

That's what Twinkies cardiologist told me so I am going by that.

You need to get a second opinion because your cardiologist is spewing bs this info is all over the internet my dog has been surviving with chf for 2 years now because I can’t afford surgery but don’t lead people who can afford surgery the wrong direction because they don’t know that 9.5 out of 10 dogs survive the surgery
@katiekatez845 жыл бұрын
@@samgdp5952 well I hope your right. I'm wondering if part of the risk is not only the surgury but the air plain ride and the overall stress in the whole ordeal. I also heard it would be bad to put them under for a teeth cleaning, wouldn't that be the same risk as heart surgery? Of course I would hope there is more of a 50/50 chance of survival, but that is just what I was told and read. But I also think every dog is different. Some may have more of a chance then others depending on the severity of the disease, age, murmer grade, etc. As of right now Twinkies severely enlarged left heart shrunk back to its normal size and so did his enlarged liver and his murmur went from a 6 out of 6 to a 5 out of 6 so I do believe the suppliments, vitamins and special diet has helped along with meds. So if someone's dog does not qualify for surgery there are other options at least.

All Fur Dogs Grooming Salon I wouldn’t do teeth cleaning this is the part of life that you comfort them not put them through more discomfort every dog is different but statistics are math and that doesn’t change there’s literally a 95% survival rate and thousands of dogs have been through the surgery you can look this up but it runs about 30,000 total with airfare and all and it’s a 6month waiting period
