Poor wee things. It's wonderful that you can treat them. Any idea where/how the disease originated and spread to the Kakapo?

great work you folks are doing, thank you so much! btw, how do you identify if they become sick between their yearly checkups? do the transmitters show them moving much less or something like that?

Kia ora, thank you for your question! Kākāpō Recovery have a remote monitoring system set up on the main island sites. The transmitters that each kākāpō wears records their activity level, which the rangers can monitor for changes. A data network records their activity on a daily basis and sends information to a central database. If a bird is showing low signs of activity, this can suggest they are unwell, and the rangers will find the bird to check on it. :)

Maybe there's a phenotypical vulnerability in some of these birds? Weird that they're not yeasty at the same time (we keep parrots) so no generalised immune disorder probably. I would suspect a phenotype issue with a novel biome on the island since they're not endemic presumably to that place. Good luck, it must be so rewarding to keep these guys alive. Thank you.
