Hi Heather, The flocked look shows as the coat grows. It comes with age. As the coat grows out and gets longer, the flocks get more felted and you see the definition. These dogs in the video were used to show to how separate the coat properly in problem areas so that the coat can continue to grow in the proper manner.

So we are really wanting one of these (merle if possible) but I noticed none of the dogs in your videos show that "dreadlock" look....how do you obtain that just keep up with the flocks more? I thought the coat was pretty low maintenance from all of the literature online so are these dogs just getting their flocks? Thanks we are newbies

Can you comment about feet, toes, nails area. It almost seems like hairs wrap around nail. There are large roundish thick mats impossible to breakup near tail and on tail.

Lucerio is probably used to you messing with his coat. Why it doesn't bother him.. Last dog I had was a little mutt dog with a long coat. Sheltie type coat. I used a harness just so I could find it, because a collar would disappear.

Oh do I ever need a consult!! Everyone here only wants to shave her and then the hair is terrible! No one here has ever heard of this coat and says I am neglectful. Shame!

This breed is considered a rare breed so it's not a wonder that veterinarians and groomers are not familiar with how to properly care for a flocked coat. I was curious and it took several searches (or link investigating) to find this one that actually explains *how* to care for flocked coats & what to do while they are transitioning from puppy coat to adult coat. And I don't think I would have thought that splitting the flocks or mats on the ears could tear their ear skin if pulled apart from the tip to the base of the mat. Yikes! Excellent grooming instruction in this video. I don't think I would trust a standard groomer to do things right & would likely learn to do all the grooming myself & create an informative one-page flyer to carry & distribute to the vet, emergency clinic, vaccine clinic, groomer, vet techs for any & all appointments & even for general passersby who ask a question or make a comment! But, that's just me, cuz I know I'd rather have them be informed instead of clueless & think my dog is being mistreated & suffering from it. Ugh. That's why, when I am asked what the main characteristics of the 'Bergamasco' are, I now answer: "the 'Bergamasco' is a long-haired dog but, if the hair is too long, that means that its owner takes no interest in it and treats it bad."

I was taught to believe the hair length of a Bergamascos represented age and beauty. You keep Matt’s away from face but keeping the locks long is good. Normally you only cut hair near the butt so it’s easier for them to poop and urinate without staining hair.

@@silviaeclaudia where did you hear that! Your not supposed to cut there hair unless it’s for good reason like near where they pee so it won’t stain there fur and the face so it doesn’t clump up. Have you ever had one

Why would you tell people that they are suffering, you are spread false information that the owners are basically torturing there dog. What the hell, mines fine and has been great for a long time. I’m getting another one cause I’m afraid my Bergamascos is getting a little old and I want to make sure the puppy can learn from an older dog living with it. But Bergamascos have long beautiful hair. Have you ever seen them at dog shows. They have 3 types of hair that weave into locks of hair as the dogs ages. This doesn’t even start happening constantly until there past age 3. It doesn’t happen fast enough at all to warrant cutting them unless you have personal reasons. Like you should brush out there ears because their skin is thin there and brush out there chin hair so good does not get stuck there.

@@silviaeclaudia you should really go to a dog show and see if you can find one and ask it’s owner some questions before you tell people what pain these dogs go through. You’ll make people think the dogs is being tortured!
