This melody is an absolute masterpiece. If you close your eyes, you can imagine all sorts of scenarios with people, places, romance, dance or even animals playing. For me, that inspiration is what tells a masterpiece - whether musical or art - from the good and the great.

if you close your eyes listening to his 8th quartet you can hear them fire bombing Dresden. my favorite is listening to the end of his 5th symphony... if you listen carefully you can hear stalin loading his gun behind you.

What an absolutely exquisite and imaginative orchestration! The colors are astounding as is the totally complimentary ensemble-making. They all feed off of each other! Wow! I want to also point out the exquisite contrapuntal lines running throughout with perfect taste and balance, never obscuring the always-present main melodic line. Also, can we all just stop and relish on Shostakovich's exquisite melodies and harmonies?! He was not just the quintessential avant-garde Russian composer. He could grab your heart and soothe it, too! What a refined taste!

Unfortunately the horn player in the video is the person who arranged the piece for woodwind quintet, and hasn't published it.
Jw pepper sells a very similar arrangement with the same part shifting style
