Carl Friedrich ZELTER 1758 - 1832 was a musical autodidact. He became friendly with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and his works include settings of Goethe's poems. ... Amongst Zelter's pupils were Felix Mendelssohn,[ Fanny Mendelssohn] Giacomo Meyerbeer, Eduard Grell, Otto Nicolai ... Zelter communicated his strong love of the music of J. S. Bach to Mendelssohn, one consequence of which was Mendelssohn's 1829 revival of Bach's St Matthew Passion at the Sing-Akademie under Zelter's auspices. This epochal event sparked a general re-evaluation and revival of Bach's works, which were then largely forgotten and regarded as old-fashioned and beyond resuscitation. ... WIKI

Also for pronouncing judgement on Berlioz first published work, 8 Scenes from Faust, a masterpiece even to this day. He declared it 'nonsense', so that Goethe (whose poem Berlioz based his work on) did not send back an acknowledgement! He was, perhaps, also why Mendelssohn had a predisposed low opinion of Berlioz when they met (tho' they remained 'friendly' relations. Poor Zelter, this work has it's attractions, but proves he was far below assessing such a genius that Berlioz was even then...

@Ginny8554 жыл бұрын

C.F.Zelter was prolific in his time. In addition to composer was a renowned teacher. Important musicians studied with Zelter among them: Mendelssohn and Fanny Mendelssohn, Meyerbeer, Otto Nicolai. He was also a friend of Goethe's and wrote music for many of his poems.
@brianmeiser41215 жыл бұрын
Mendelssohn didn't study with Zelter. He was taught by Zelter. For exact, Mendelssohn thought Zelter was abusive.

My first impression of this piece was that it was a poorly-written piece, but when you listen to the orchestra, you realize the orchestra has all the unifying themes. What other concerto for viola in E-flat has the unifying themes mostly in the orchestra, and has a Rondo for the last movement? Mozart Symphony Concertante. I’m not going to put this piece in that league by any means, but it does sound nice and make sense when you hear it with the entire orchestra. Of course, the Rolla concertos have some similarities, except that their range goes much higher on the viola..
@exitolaboral3 жыл бұрын
This concerto needs more thought, just using the viola like a big violin just doesn't work. The violin shines on that role. On the contrary, the viola should what the violin can't do well.
