“Active Imagination,” a technique designed by Carl Jung and recreated by MJ Dorian on his podcast Creative Codex, accesses subconscious wisdom. Jung recorded his waking visions in The Red Book. If you have a history of schizophrenia or psychotic disorder, consult with your doctor before using this meditation. For deeper instruction, read "Inner Work: Using Dreams and Active Imagination for Personal Growth" by Robert A. Johnson. This meditation is a deep dive to be undertaken with care.Relax and enjoy.

Unbelievable how well this worked. I revisited an amber-eyed female guide that I’d had an incredibly philosophical discussion with in a prior lucid dream and she assisted me in opening up my heart/readying myself to face more masculine entities within myself that would work to call me more directly on my bs and guide me more concretely into looking at actual issues in order to resolve them. One Poseidon like character challenged me and said that I’m not actually ready to face these things within myself. I said said I was. He said, prove it. At this moment I opened up my heart to him like a book so he could read it. He said it’s in Brail so clearly it’s something I haven’t been wanting to see. I said yes, but you can read every page, and I want to read your heart too so I can gain any wisdom it will offer me as well as the strength needed to go deeper within myself. After all this I then found myself traveling on a blood platelet like an inter tube through the blood vessels of the universe’s heart. There was so much more but point being, if you enter into this with an open mind and really let go, this practice clearly has a lot of value. I imagine just like with lucid dreaming, I’ll experience some reoccurring things and things may become more vivid overtime allowing me to explore further and deeper and actually get to the root of some issues. I’m going to try it for 30 days and see where things take me! I’ve always been frustrated by how difficult lucid dreaming is to achieve. This seems like a much easier entry point to a similar experience so I’m very excited to explore this active imagination path further!

Thank you so much for sharing your extraordinary experience. I'm moved by your courage, your curiosity, and your openness to self-inquiry. As a fellow practitioner of lucid dreaming, I agree that Jung's method of Active Imagination offers easier access to the liminal realm. If you continue for 30 days as you plan, you might find a level of stability and continuity that is harder to locate in dreams. Your amber-eyed guide may reappear. Or not. Your hitchhiking on the back of platelets may take you ever deeper into the heart of the universe. Or the imagery may transform completely. Set intentions, but release expectations. Trust your journey. Clearly you already do. I love how you challenged the Poseidon character, asserting that you were indeed ready to face yourself, to cut through BS. And even when he tells you you must not be ready to "see" because your heart book is in Brail, you persist. How beautiful your gesture of opening your heart for him to read. What trust! If you feel so moved, please update us as your journey unfolds. You are an inspiration.

Tried it for the first time today. It was a boreal forest, with towering conifers and squirrels climbing them. Sunlight was breaking through the mist. I began digging and found myself in a small magical garden illuminated by the starry skies above, almost like from a Ghibli anime. Strands of colorful energy (mostly violet) were wrapped around trees, and a small stone road led to a tree inhabited by another squirrel. It jumped on me and hugged me, and then lept onto another tree and dropped a nut from it - it was shaped like a mix of a pomegranate and a hazelnut. It was very fragile, as I was able to break it in my hand. I offered some to the squiirel, but it refused, so I eat it. Felt nothing in particular. Then, I followed the road and it led to a beach during daybreak. The squirrel jumped off me and we were watching the Sun. I began asking it questions: Are you my friend? - Yesnt. Do you love me? - Yesnt. Do you want the best for me? - YES! What are you? - Silence. After a few minutes, we decided to go back to the garden, as orange fireflies were buzzing around. Deep into it the squirrel disappeared, as I found a cozy bench with a lightpost near it. I lowered myself on the bench, taking in the glow of the fireflies, and then there was your call to go back up.

My first active learning experience. What a glorious, colourful experience!! I saw multiple imaginative creatures at first like a movie at a 2x speed, As I go deeper and deeper I saw my ex - crush, ( I saw her dream 2 days before ). She was there in the same dream position. The scene changed into a long row of glowing flowers with a lovely fragrance. I change my ex-crush into pink flowing energy like a river which dilutes and covers my body. My body is magnified in attractive pink colour. Then, out of me, a beautiful woman appeared. She was very attractive. I was anxious about what happens to me. She makes me calm with her loving words. Those words flow like energy. Then, she takes me underground in darkness. I was scared and she turn into the dark but she told me sweetly. " Embrace the darkness inside you with love energy". Then, the phone call awakened me.

Thanks for sharing your amazing experience. And good for your for following the suggestion to invite real life figures to change form so that your inner energy is not mistakenly projected onto others. In Jung's own inner work, his soul often appeared to him in feminine form. I wonder if the lovely figure in your meditation was a representation of your soul. How beautiful those words, "Embrace the darkness inside you with loving energy." That's exactly what Jung meant, I think, when he encouraged us to embrace our shadows. Many thanks for sharing!

That was fun! Def went like 6 levels deep! Interesting how the mind can produce these vivid images that are understood in 30 mins but take so much longer to convey the depth on paper. I definitely need some better questions lined up to ask next time instead of just “what’s been bothering me lately?” And “is there anything you want to tell me?”

I was digging in some backyard at night, with some old shovel and I had gloves, when you mentioned I can have someone as a support like sherpa, I imagined white owl on my right shoulder but havent seen it after. While digging I bumped into a big wodden chest and all of a sudden a big overweight lady came to help me pull it out, I asked the lady who does she represent, she told me my heaviness and toughnes. While opening the chest I saw a puppy labrador with his nose brown from the mud for a brief second, also I saw someones feet in big rusty shoes getting wet since the chest started leaking. After opening I was all of a sudden on some egzotic beach, with white sand just playfully jumping and enjoying on it white sun and light breeze on me. Next scene I am in bed in some luxury villa with big glass windows overlooking that beach and there was a handsome man with me in the bed, I asked him who are you and he told me I am you and kind of dissapeard. I had some brief moments of helping that labrador from the begging and some moment where I said to myself okey this is the trickster part of me, but I cannot remember since I drifted to sleep later. Thank you for this meditation, I will for sure try it few more times, but I m looking to see if someone can try to explain some symbolism behind my visualizations. :)

I swam in the ocean to a small island because I was following a fish with legs. Who then, on the island started meditation before I interrupted him. I asked him about his purpose and what he was doing which was just merely existing. I asked why and he answered just because. Then he asked me what I was trying to find and I said I don't know so he told me then why are you trying to find it and again I told him that I didn't know. I recalled how I got there and the just sat across from him in silence and tried to flesh the scenery out in my minds eye and to take everything in. Like being mindfully in the active imagination afterwards I grabbed the stone that I found while digging at the start it teleported me back I closed the hole back up and "woke" up

Thanks for sharing this evocative experience. I love the way you engaged the "dream" figure with questions, and how it turn questioned you. What an amazing exchange! It reminds me of the Rumi quote, "What you seek is seeking you." The scene also has remarkable closure. I love the way you used the stone to teleport back. Nice work!

I completely lost my self when breathing exercise started. It was so hard for me and the longer i did it the more sweat came out. I tried my best to fight the urge of stoping up until digging and that’s where i finally lost the meditation. I was breathing heavily and sweating so much😢

My dear, go easy with this or any meditation. With breath exercises, it's important to go at your own pace and trust your body. Your body knows how to breathe. Start slow. This particular Carl Jung meditation is like jumping into the deep end of the pool. You might prefer a gentler, more basic approach to meditation, like the ones taught by Pema Chodron. Here's an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJ6VomZnlMqMrJI. You can find other simple, soothing meditations by Pema Chodron, Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield here on KZbin. Be gentle with your sweet self.

Thankyou Ma'am. I had a bit of trouble with the part regarding digging a hole. I did see muddy water come out like a burst pipe..... and I swam in it, before getting pulled out into the stratosphere. Thanks for sharing your experience. If the "digging" imagery doesn't work for you, you could imagine descending a spiral staircase or climbing down into a deep canyon, ...any method of symbolically entering the subconscious. But I like your playful response of swimming in the muddy water. Getting drawn out into the stratosphere sounds pretty wild! Carl Jung also found himself in the stratosphere in his near death experience, which you can explore here if you like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWaTpoyoedxojrc. If you want your experience to feel more immersive and less controlled, you might try doing it when you are already a bit sleepy. Starting with several long deep breaths can help shift your brainwaves out of beta to alpha or even theta, which will allow the imagery to unfold in a more dreamlike way. Keep us posted if you feel so inclined. Good luck!

When I tried this, I opened the tunnel to an empty library with a wooden chair facing a large window with an ocean view, and I looked to my left and there was a giant faceless lizard man about 9ft tall and I became afraid and forced myself out. Why do I become afraid how can I continue without scaring myself back out
@TessCallahan
@TessCallahan Жыл бұрын
Great question! First of all, the large window with the ocean view might suggest a beautiful vantage point on the vastness and depth of your subconscious. Wonderful promise there! The presence of frightening images like your lizard man are quite common in dreams and active imagination work. Carl Jung depicts many such encounters in his illustrated journal, The Red Book. Rather than flee from such figures, Jung asked them what they represented and what they had come to teach him. Often the very question would cause the figure to change form into something less frightening, and a useful conversation could ensue. You might enjoy reading "The Art of Transforming Nightmares" by Clare Johnson. She explains the book here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lajWhodmnNuSgpI. Johnson uses the same Jungian premise of befriending our inner energies no matter how they present themselves. Nevertheless, whenever this work becomes too frightening, your instinct to step back is a good one. Take it slow. Take baby steps. Rather than reenter another active imagination session, you might try writing a dialogue in your journal in which you ask the lizard guy who he is and why he showed up. See what answer materializes on the page. You might be surprised. Even tickled. Ultimately everything that arises is there to support you, empower you, and help you grow. Thanks for commenting. Keep us posted!

@TessCallahan
@TessCallahan 7 ай бұрын
This isn't necessarily a bad sign. Just as in dreams, sometimes the inhospitable characters have jewels to offer us. Try not to take the rudeness personally. See through it. Get curious. Ask why this guide has appeared to you and why they are upset. You might try having a conversation with them on paper, writing both sides of the dialogue. The characters who appeared in Jung's imagination were often rather snarky and difficult at first. He recommended 20 or 30 meditative visits to the same destination, the same characters, to unearth their offerings. On his @CreativeCodex podcast, MJ Dorian has deep dives into the Jung's Red Book which you might really enjoy listening to. Don't be deterred. Happy inner travels! And thanks for commenting.

I met my guide and first it was in the form of my brother i request it to change its form and what i got was amazing an amazing experience and a great start. I was scared at some parts and some i didn't understood. I just have to ask one thing, does it all have to have meanings or it can be just noises too? I will be greatful if anyone can provide some clarification.
@TessCallahan
@TessCallahan Жыл бұрын
Hi Vaibhav. Thanks for your comment. Whether through dreams or active imagination, interacting with our subconscious can feel scary or overwhelming at times. It can be helpful to step back, remind yourself it's all imagination, and get curious. For example let's say a monster is chasing you. Instead of running away, you can turn and ask questions, such as "Hey, who are you? Why has my mind created you? What part of me do you represent? Where in my life do I feel energy like yours?" Such questions can initiate enlightening conversations. The monster may turn into a butterfly before your eyes. As for meaning, sometimes images from the subconscious can simply be a cleaning up of psychic noise from the day. Other times profound and meaningful symbols arise. Be kind to yourself. Go slow. And if anything truly disturbs you, it's always a good idea to talk to therapist. Good luck!

Hi there. This is a guided meditation based on a Carl Jung method called "Active Imagination." If you would feel safer learning more about the technique before trying it out, I suggest you read the book INNER WORK: USING DREAMS AND ACTIVE IMAGINATION FOR PERSONAL GROWTH by Robert A. Johnson. It's an excellent informative book. If you have never meditated before, consider starting with a more basic meditation such as this one based on the teachings of Pema Chodron: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqHRh4x_fbNrm5o . If you feel that this or any meditation could be potentially unsafe for you for any reason, consult your therapist or doctor before trying it out. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I wish you well.

I’ve attempted this on numerous occasions but I’ve come to find that there are simply too many intrusive thoughts to the point that conversations are completely non understandable and comparable to absolute gibberish. The sentence structure is there in terms of responses but they’ll be things like; The donkey flame flies high with the cheese of 40,000 night rests. Please open the pantry of zealousness for the light of indoctrinated trees. This isn’t a joke so I bid you to please not receive it as such. It has grown quite frustrating as I would very much desire to embark upon these journeys so as to learn what that which is within me has to say but I’m afraid I simply cannot make sense of their words. If you by any chance have any imparting wisdom as to techniques I may employ then I would absolutely love to hear it as I can definitely use some guidance. Can’t help but feel like I’m doing something wrong
@TessCallahan
@TessCallahan Жыл бұрын
Hi Anthony. You are not doing anything wrong. On the contrary, the sincerity of your effort will repay you. We cannot control what the subconscious offers up, but we can skillfully navigate it. When we embark on any sort of meditation, intrusive thoughts inevitably arise. The examples you mentioned are so wacky and inventive that it seems your thoughts must have to work extra hard to distract you, which is a kind of compliment to the inherent subtlety of your mind. You can treat these thoughts like court jesters, thank them for their efforts, but let them know it is perfectly safe for you to enter the deeper waters of your being. You might think of it like scuba diving. The boat may be rocked by heavy seas, wind and rain may be raucous, but once you drop beneath the surface, chatter fades away and a beautiful silence envelops you. You realize that surface commotion is not the core of your being. It’s just weather. Let’s say even down here a fish shows up and starts talking gibberish. You can try a number of things. You can ask the fish her purpose. If she has something meaningful to offer, you can ask her to speak clearly and simply. Or to present her meaning visually instead of through words. If she is here to represent the normal radio static of your mind (we all have it), you can acknowledge her existence but let her know you’re not going to be bothered by her. Her natural habitat is the surface chop. The deeper you go, the harder it will be for her to follow. And if she does follow, well, that’s her choice. It’s not your problem. In other words, don’t attach to the thoughts. Neither try to push them away. Stay neutral. This particular Carl Jung practice is an advanced meditation. If you don’t already have a meditation practice, you might consider starting with more foundational methods that teach how to stabilize the mind. Teachers I recommend include Pema Chodron, Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield. I also offer tracks along these lines, which I’ll link below. I’ve heard my KZbin channel is attracting random ads, so I’ll also link to places where you can find them ad-free. Please let me know how it goes and if there’s anything else I can answer. Very cool! According to Jung, if you do this practice consistently over a 30 day period or so, you may well develop a somewhat stable setting and cast of characters, still mercurial but with more stability than a dream. That consistency offers the opportunity for dialogue and inquiry, which can be very fruitful. Enjoy and good luck!

@@aliakhtar6079 Hi Ali. The reference comes from renowned Jungian analysts Dr. Murray Stein & Dr. Paul Brutsche in a series hosted by the Asheville Jung Center. I highly recommend this excerpt from the series in which the two discuss Active Imagination. Thanks for your comment! kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6nCqaitg7CeiZI

Lots of animals came to me. First a cat then husky followed by fish and a badger 🤭

You had quite a visitation from animal spirits! You might think of them as each representing some energy within you that wants to be heard. You might ask Jungian type questions, such as, "What part of me is cat-like? Where in my life do I see husky energy right now?" In Jungian thinking, fish often represent some element of the subconscious. Are you familiar with Jamie Sams' "Medicine Cards"? If not, you might enjoy it. There's an interesting section on the badger. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

@@TessCallahan hi thanks for the response I shall try again and ask the questions. It’s very interesting for sure. A part of me didn’t want to come back when you said it was time to come up to the surface, how long is too long to stay in that mind state?? 😊

@@Mimi_113 Trust your instincts, Mimi. Once you get the hang of it, you can do it without the recording. When the "visit" reaches its natural conclusion, you'll know when it's time to surface. Using this method, Jung developed an ongoing relationship with his inner guide, Philemon, which he details in his gorgeously illustrated journal, The Red Book. I don't think he set a timer on those explorations. Trust your own inclinations and enjoy the journey.

Sometimes what appears to us as a "demon" in our dreams or meditations is just some rejected or unloved part of us that needs our compassion. As in fairy tales, the frog may turn out to be a prince. Self-compassion is the key.

The key is to allow yourself to be in a relaxed alert meditative state. If you are not a practiced meditator or lucid dreamer, this is probably not a good meditation to start with. Try practicing a basic method like mindfulness, vipassana, or shamatha for a few weeks (such as this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJ6VomZnlMqMrJIfeature=shared.) Once you get proficient, you might have more luck with Active Imagination. On the other hand, for some people visualzing does not come easily, in which case this may not be the best fit for you. Good luck. I wish you well.
