This magnificent set of six string symphonies Wq 182 by CPE Bach are very typical of the unrestrained, heightened expression of the composer’s very personal North German *empfindsamer Stil.* CPE’s music really cannot be labelled ‘sturm und drang’, which was a mainly Viennese phenomenon, and is represented by works such as Haydn’s symphonies 26, 39, 44, 45, 49; Mozart’s 25; JC Bach’s Opus 6 No 6; and works by composers like Vanhal and Dittersdorf. What both these musical styles do have in common however, is a desire to move away from the lightweight, easy, galant and rococo style of music that was common across much of Europe at the time. I like to think of empfindsamer Stil as being about *inner* sensitivity, whereas sturm und drang is about *outward* gesture. Regardless of any labels, you are quite right - this is superb. Though I might just quibble about the addition of a bassoon doubling the bass).
