Hi Matt, thanx for taking time to let me know how Carl Radle got you playing the Bass. He played on some of the best songs of that time. His playing with Eric on the first Album and handing Eric that J.J. Cale's 45 of After Midnight, is a great story and created a lifetime friendship between J.J. and Eric. I really enjoy seeing the film, Concert for Bangledesh, where Leon Chose to get Carl for his solo's instead of using George's player. Please feel free to pass along our podcasts to your friends. When you get a chance, check out some of our other stories. There are more than a couple surprises there. After a lengthy absence, I'm hoping to get producing and posting new add'l stories, very soon. Rock on My Friend, Tommy

Nice to see this great tribute to Carl Radle. Not often mentioned when discussing great bass players, but he certainly should be. As a side note, regarding Skip and Flip (mentioned herein)......."Flip" was Gary S. Paxton who did indeed continue on in the business as a well-known producer and songwriter.

My recent album has a song dedicated to Carl. Here is my story. When I was 11 years old I bought a single ticket to see Leon Russell perform at the Philadelphia Spectrum. I arrived a few hours before the show started so that I could get as close to the stage as possible. I was able to find a spot up front right near where the piano was set up. While I was waiting Carl Radle (Leon’s Bassist) walked on stage to check his equipment. When I saw him I yelled as loud as I could “HEY CARL”, he looked over at me I waved, he waved back and left the stage. About two hours later the show started. When Carl walked on stage, he looked over at me waved and smiled. I was so happy, he made my day. This song is dedicated to the memory of Carl Dean Radle. RIP Carl. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6vUlIKGa6aCiKc

I met Carl backstage at a Leon Russell concert at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in 1973. He was a nice guy and we talked music for a few minutes. He signed my copy of the Layla album. I said to him "You were raising HELL on the Derek and the Dominos Live album" to which he replied (with surprise) "I WAS?" I said ... yeah you were.

Leo Feathers did not play concert for Bangladesh. Jesse Ed Davis who was also an Oklahoma native American did it. Eric was dope sick and jesse sat in for him, Leo told me he did like the attention of people thinking he was the one, but it was actually Jesse ed Davis. They did look a lot alike. Infact George Harrison even introduces the Indian guitarist as Jesse ed Davis. Carl and Leo were also good friends and Leo mentioned Carl quite often to me. A lot of neat people or legends I was fortunate to meet at only 27 years old at the time. Wish I could go back to that time. Tulsa sound was it and many legends come from tulsa. Partly due to claude Bridges.

Correction re: the video: regarding Delaney & Bonnie, Carl was already in the band when Jim Gordon took over from Jim Keltner (who had taken over from Jimmy Karstein). Clapton joined the Radle/Gordon lineup (as, when possible, did George Harrison, Dave Mason, and Duane Allman). After a tour of UK and Europe, the band aside from organist/vocalist Bobby Whitlock quit D&B to join Leon Russell and Joe Cocker for Mad Dogs & Englishmen. Whitlock and Clapton would later enlist Radle for Derek & the Dominos, and add Gordon after Keltner could accepted due to touring with Gabor Szabo. The Clapton solo album was essentially a Delaney & Bonnie record - all their band including Leon Russell, with Delaney producing. And as noted in comments elsewhere here, yes, it was Stephen Stills on bass for 'Let It Rain'. There is a YT clip of Bobby Whitlock talking about that. And here is Whitlock talking about Radle. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHeTdYNsn7eKgZI

I was just reading about Carl Radle. After he was fired from Erick Clapton band in summer 1979, Carl worked with Peter Frampton for a while but returned to Tulsa in 1980 where he worked with other musicians. Are they’re any demos or unreleased recordings of Carl Radle from late 79- early’80? Please answer.

Confirmation on claims here of Stephen Stills playing bass on 'Let It Rain'. Bobby Whitlock was organist/singer with Delaney & Bonnie's band, which is who backed Clapton on his debut solo album. Whitlock and Clapton later formed Derek & the Dominos, bringing in Radle and drummer Jim Gordon to complete the lineup. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZbQe6xsZb-Dra8

Wayne Blanchard - This is what I heard Steven Stills say about "let it rain" The song was basically finished- Stills convinced Clapton that towards the end of the song , a separate bass line would add effect to the crescendo - if you listen you can hear what's basically a guitar solo on bass - dumtobdumdumdumdum - Clapton loved it and dubbed it in - the record was so close to being finished , there wasn't time to include Stills in the liner notes - this bass line is the only contribution , albeit remarkable , so this leads me to believe that Mr Radle is indeed the primary bass player on the song ....

Wayne: Slills told Clapton while laying out a , ummm Something on the piano " I can vision s bass line over the existing bass that will bring it on home - on being informed of the late notice that no credit would be in the liner notes Stills says " I don't give a fuck , we know and thats all that matters to me" Paraphrasing of course ! How cool is Stephen Freeking Stills!!??!

No mention of Bobby Whitlock? That's insulting. Derek and the Dominos was Whitlock and Clapton. Gordon and Radle already had gigs lined up with other acts even before the Layla album was recorded. But it was not an Eric Clapton band and Eric was NOT "Derek." Bobby was not EC's "sideman." No way.

Not much about Carls time in the 70’s with the EC band (mostly made up of Okies).EC’s only #1 hit was with the Okie band, Cocaine, a song written by another Okie, Cale.

HI and thanx for reaching out. You are right, I just glazed over his time with Clapton. No excuse, just went along a different way. Carl is one of my favorite OML people. He brought the song After Midnight to Clapton to use as his 12th song in his first album. Carl was Leon's favorite Bassist. Carl had done some amazing work. Unfortunately his demons caught up with him. BTW Cocaine was written by Okie, J.J. Cale whose first hit was After Midnight. I saw Carl's gold record on Saturday while moving on a tour thru the Church Studio in Tulsa. I'm kicking myself for not catching the name of the Album it was presented. You are also correct, Clapton decided to move on from his Okie band to change his sound. Didn't turn out so well. I understand, Carl went and drug Clapton out of a his hole and got him back into the studio and touring. Probably saved his career and life. Thanx again! TH
