Carl…ness.
Recently awarded “MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR 20/21” for the QLD Prestige awards - Carl Wockner is a straight-up SAVAGE! (the good kind).
Latest single “Fool’s Gold” is a delicate balance of organic-acoustic POP mixed with singer-songwriter lyricism and honesty, which is exactly what you get when you’re first exposed to Carl Wockner, especially in a live setting.
Determined to pave his own path in modern music - Wockner uses multi-instrumentalism and dynamic production to take listeners on a journey through multiple genres and sonic excitement, all while telling a story.
“Recent singles of 2020 END OF ME, PAINT THE AIR, STEREO, CMB have been a collaboration with pop producer Ben Flanders. We added specific ingredients of Pop production with REAL acoustic guitar, hits, taps - vocal trills and voicing. These were all incorporated INTO the beat to give a nice earthy presence, and we even added Kazoo (on Better) just because.. I really feel like we just straight up need more kazoo in our lives!”
Carl Wockner was named the first and ONLY Australian artist to ever win Top Honors at the International Acoustic Music Award’s 2015 (USA), along with top of the AAA category for the release of his album Crayon Days with producer Michael Flanders in Nashville TN. Wockner has skipped up the charts with his first two single releases receiving high rotation to national radio in both Australia and USA which landed the title track into the International Billboard Charts. The same album has received a 2016 IMA (Independent Music Awards) Finalist nomination for Best Adult Contemporary Album. It was following this recent success that Wockner relocated his family to Nashville TN, USA as a strategic move for his evolving career.
Sept 2019, Carl was featured for an entire episode of “Backstage Marquee” a syndicate show aired across the USA featuring original artists set to be ‘the next big thing.’
Sept 2018 Wockner performed LIVE on National USA Television. The show HLN on the CNN Network for the segment “The Weekend Express,” featured Carl’s original songwriting and performance as a showcase taste of Nashville / Music City.
His rare “Live Looping” style solo performance matched only with his signature vocals and unique acoustic guitar work renders Carl in a league of his own. The live shows have been recognized throughout Australia and USA with multiple headliner performances at festivals and touring, and Wockner is now rumoured as one of the busiest musicians in Nashville, TN - aka “Music City.”
Since landing in Nashville, Wockner has released two EP’s including a Christmas release with the favoured “Santa Selfie.” Currently his latest single “Better” is noted as the best studio representation of his signature live performance style.
There’s something about Carl Wockner’s music that simply exudes peace. The peace you feel when you’re humming along to a nostalgic track, or the peace you feel when you just know everything’s going to be ok. However you connect with Carl’s music, you would agree this he is definitely onto something.
Carl’s first EP, the self-produced, recorded, mixed (all in his lounge room) Acoustic…ness, was released in 2011 to an overwhelmingly positive response. Single “Pictures” received airplay on Hot 91 FM and ZINC FM, the latter of whose DJ’s referred to him as “the man with the big hair and Golden Tonsils.” Carl was also named a finalist in three categories at the 2012 and 2013 MusicOZ awards: Acoustic Singer/Songwriter, Blues and Roots, and Pop.

Cool! Congrats on your wireless mic! I started go for a separate wireless mic with two midi bluetooth Flic-buttons attached to it this summer. It’s amazing. Once i get my loops down i can start/stop all, or take away/add tracks from my mic while moving on stage or even in the audience with near 0 latency. 🤯 Keep up the looping! 🎉

This might be a stupid question, but why, as a solo performer, do you have your guitar and your loops in stereo? What benefit to you get from it? I have to add, I've never really tried out the differences b/w stereo and mono as a solo performer. To me, it was always a thing to go into with big effects, such as delay coming from right and left and behind my left leg and whatnot. Let me know :)
@carlwockner
@carlwockner Жыл бұрын
never a stupid question mate:) So I actually pan my loops to the center (force of habit for mixing drums) and my stereo guitar is panned hard R-L but really the only thing that is stereo is reverb, and occasionally some delay. That said - once you have stereo reverb in your ears, or through a good system, you never go back! haha. Not a necessity at all, just a preference on my part:) also - cus I can!

Awesome vid! Carl could you show how you’re attaching your small router? I have a bigger (desktop-sized) one and I run it out the back and then set it on my case, which falls sometimes and just looks terrible with the cables anyways. I like your idea but can’t tell how you’re attaching and connecting it. Thanks for the tutorials! 🤘🏼

Amazing rig Carl! How do you get the looper signal to come out fully mixed and sound so good? Do you adjust everything to the millimeter in your other pedals so that the signal enters the looper with the final sound?
@carlwockner
@carlwockner Жыл бұрын
thanks - its all about the tone of the instrument and setting the gain correctly. All my other pedals only affect the "Effects" such as octave, reverb etc... none of these pedals adjust the "tone" of the dry signal

@@carlwockner Thanks for the answer, but what I wanted to ask you was, do you equalize or compress each channel of the looper? For example, the channel where you record the percussion, do you equalize it so that it sounds better with that type of sound? Thank you very much from the heart 🙏
@carlwockner
@carlwockner Жыл бұрын
@@gitarraikasten Nothing on the looper channels. When I plug them into my mixing console I just do a little light compression and 1 or 2 notched Freq's based on the general mains mix but thats it - everything is essentially flat.

Just ordered some spires. Do you actually setup a room mic or anything so you can hear the crowd. Requests and banter? Or just pull them out when punters come up. Or just point at your ears to let them know you're not taking requests? 😜 Also, do you do much tweaking for house systems, or just go with your iem mix and assume the best out front?
@carlwockner
@carlwockner Жыл бұрын
Nice! A lot of people do use a room mic. I’m weird and don’t like it. Works great on a small stage but on larger stages there’s too much audio bouncing around from FOH and it’s hard to keep in time with my loops. I usually just pop an IEM out to talk to people then put it back in. If I don’t have a live engineer on FOH I’ll just walk out front without my ears to make fine tuning adjustments.

Great video, love any kind of rig rundowns! But I do have one question: You mentioned you got 5 inputs (2x guitar, 2x loops, 1x mic) and 4-6 outputs (2x IEM, 2x main, 2x wedge if needed). Why are you using such a big mixing console? Wouldn't a smaller one fulfill the purpose as good as the big one with the benefits of less weight and size (which leads to a smaller rack in total)? :)
@carlwockner
@carlwockner Жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, its a pretty small console really - but mostly there are no smaller consoles with the same amount of outputs. I also meant to add to this video that I use this console to double patch for my larger amphitheater shows. So I use 7-8 outputs in this case, post FX and Gain. No smaller consoles have 8 outputs - that I know of. The MR18 is only 3u. so best case scenario Id still need a 5u rack, but 6 works fine for me. I also have room in the back for storage on flights etc,

Hey Carl, have you ever thought about using one mic for the loop and the live vocals? I use a Palmer MI DMS - a little switch with one xlr input and two outputs. One goes into my RC-300 which allows me to adjust the mic-volume for my loops, the other one goes directly into my mixer (by the way - I have the same mixer, but here it is called X Air XR18). I think it is the cheapest but also a very good alternative. By the way: Very good content. Love your music and performances! :) Greetings from Germany - Matthias

Depends how good your sound is. They usually love it in my experience. But I only use it this way for smaller shows. Anything larger like an amphitheater, I double patch and send out each channel post eq and Fx so they still have full control and I usually bring my own front of house engineer 🤙🏼

Thanks! I did consider making up some patch adapters on the rack wings on my Midas console. I only need 2 cables to access the back of my rack. For now it’s easy just to have 2 cables there, and they are opposite gender so I can just plug them together for transport easy
