Carl Wockner Describing In Ear Monitor Setups for live audio applications.
Carl…ness.
Recently awarded “MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR 20/21” for the QLD Prestige awards - Carl Wockner is a straight-up SAVAGE! (the good kind).
Latest single “Fool’s Gold” is a delicate balance of organic-acoustic POP mixed with singer-songwriter lyricism and honesty, which is exactly what you get when you’re first exposed to Carl Wockner, especially in a live setting.
Determined to pave his own path in modern music - Wockner uses multi-instrumentalism and dynamic production to take listeners on a journey through multiple genres and sonic excitement, all while telling a story.
“Recent singles of 2020 END OF ME, PAINT THE AIR, STEREO, CMB have been a collaboration with pop producer Ben Flanders. We added specific ingredients of Pop production with REAL acoustic guitar, hits, taps - vocal trills and voicing. These were all incorporated INTO the beat to give a nice earthy presence, and we even added Kazoo (on Better) just because.. I really feel like we just straight up need more kazoo in our lives!”
Carl Wockner was named the first and ONLY Australian artist to ever win Top Honors at the International Acoustic Music Award’s 2015 (USA), along with top of the AAA category for the release of his album Crayon Days with producer Michael Flanders in Nashville TN. Wockner has skipped up the charts with his first two single releases receiving high rotation to national radio in both Australia and USA which landed the title track into the International Billboard Charts. The same album has received a 2016 IMA (Independent Music Awards) Finalist nomination for Best Adult Contemporary Album. It was following this recent success that Wockner relocated his family to Nashville TN, USA as a strategic move for his evolving career.
Sept 2019, Carl was featured for an entire episode of “Backstage Marquee” a syndicate show aired across the USA featuring original artists set to be ‘the next big thing.’
Sept 2018 Wockner performed LIVE on National USA Television. The show HLN on the CNN Network for the segment “The Weekend Express,” featured Carl’s original songwriting and performance as a showcase taste of Nashville / Music City.
His rare “Live Looping” style solo performance matched only with his signature vocals and unique acoustic guitar work renders Carl in a league of his own. The live shows have been recognized throughout Australia and USA with multiple headliner performances at festivals and touring, and Wockner is now rumoured as one of the busiest musicians in Nashville, TN - aka “Music City.”
Since landing in Nashville, Wockner has released two EP’s including a Christmas release with the favoured “Santa Selfie.” Currently his latest single “Better” is noted as the best studio representation of his signature live performance style.
There’s something about Carl Wockner’s music that simply exudes peace. The peace you feel when you’re humming along to a nostalgic track, or the peace you feel when you just know everything’s going to be ok. However you connect with Carl’s music, you would agree this he is definitely onto something.
Carl’s first EP, the self-produced, recorded, mixed (all in his lounge room) Acoustic…ness, was released in 2011 to an overwhelmingly positive response. Single “Pictures” received airplay on Hot 91 FM and ZINC FM, the latter of whose DJ’s referred to him as “the man with the big hair and Golden Tonsils.” Carl was also named a finalist in three categories at the 2012 and 2013 MusicOZ awards: Acoustic Singer/Songwriter, Blues and Roots, and Pop.

Thanks for the video. The most important aspect of our metal band going IEM with this mixer is one you didn't mention. If you tell the engineer you are all IEM, he/she can cut the signal to the wedges and virtually eliminate the most common source of feedback with every venue we have played at. We've seen opening bands feed back the whole set because the sound guy is fighting with monitors and mic feedback. Not with us...game changer for us. Regardless of the engineer's skill level, we no longer feed back.

Hey mate! you just link the busses as L R. so say go to bus 3, and hit link and it will auto link it to 4, with 3 being the L and 4 being R. then when you mix eg the lead vocal, when you SEND it to Bus 3-4 just pan it where you want it and it'll come out wherever you want it panned.

Yes, you can use the Aux outputs on the front. Each input will have aux sends, so you can vary the amount of each input going to each aux out. The thing to consider is how many different monitor mixes you need. The XR12 has 2 AUX outs, the XR16 has 4, and the XR18 has 6.

Hey my guy! Very informative Video! Im in a bit of a hassle here. Right now im in a band with 5 members, each with our own in ear monitors (KZ-AS12 with a Behringer Powerplay 1) We havn't played with in-ears before, so we just bought them for the sake of it. If im Correctly here, I can plug my guitar (Line 6 Helix) in input one of the Behringer X Air, and plug my Powerplay into AUX 1, and hear mysel? And if so, if the other members plugged in with their system through the rest of th AUX's inputs, I can mix it all around to my prefference on the app and what i personally want to hear through AUX 1? Hi. Thanks for taking the time. Hey ... For the setup as you've described it, wouldn't another option be to plug everything straight into the mixer and then use the aux outs, set as pre fader, to go to FoH and to use them main mixer out as your in ear.mix? If so you'd get the same outcome with quite a bit less gear. I have the same radial splitters and DIs as well but I only use them if I use an analogue mixer which won't havethe number of sends I need (or of I want galvanic isolation ... I know phantom power is supposed to be safe for gear but ... Mmm better to be safe then sorry. Thanks again.
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that would just bypass the mic splitter in this case since here I would still need the DI's. You could also run post EQ out individual AUX sends to the FOH for an internal split on your console. Which is what I currently do now.

What a great explanation , super vid Carl. Was wondering, most of my gigs I don’t have a live sound guy. I’m a bit worried about using in ear monitors , incase I don’t hear what’s happening out the front. I normally hook into the bars system, but sometimes I won’t have a monitor and will rely on the FOH sound and for this case I was thinking of using IEMs. Would you use IEMs in this instance?
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate:) In that case - its actually pretty easy, you flick you earbuds out of your ears and all you will hear is what the FOH mix is. Even if youre still on stage you can get a pretty good indication on what to adjust. THEN once youre happy with the FOH sound, pop your IEM's back in and adjust your reference mix. Even if use a wedge on stage (and if I am controlling the whole thing myself) Ill mute the wedge and mix the FOH from my stage position, then unmute the wedge so it doesn't cloud my mix judgement of FOH.

@@carlwocknerI'm using the Behringer P16-M and I've routed the mainbus on 2 channels (L/R) to my P16. So I can (for rehearsal/visitors) listen exactly what goes to the main mix. Eventually it depends on what speaker system you're using how it will sound, but this way I can get a decent mix upfront.

Thanks mate haha! On any smaller PA system there is no real audible difference - but recording live shows, or through a larger setup the MR18 is clearer and has more headroom. Its mostly down to the Midas preamps vs the behringer "Midas designed" pre's of the XR18. Honestly now there is minimal price diff between the 2 and they operate exactly the same. Id go the MR18 if there is a choice.

I was hoping you would speak to the mono stereo thing. You can clearly see you have 1 XLR coming out of the Bus....that means a mono feed to the wireless transmitter. I have read mono is prevalent for IEM use. Is there any reason to split the mono signal into the L and R of the transmitter?
@MattyDemello

If you use it as stereo you'll have to send 2 monitor signals from your mixer to the box and pan each channel left and right. I just use mono because I don't usually send some things to one side only

Hi Carl ! Thanx a lot for this video, you made the in-ear config problem cristal clear :D However i was wondering if i could use a splitter intead of a DI box for my electric guitar ? With the following setup : Guitar > Boss GT 8 effects processor > Fender Champ 100 amplifier > PWR OUT of the amp going into the Splitter Input. Then Output 1 to my in-ear monitor and Output 2 to the mixing table. Thanks for your help :) Alex LDD
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, Technically a splitter would work but you wouldn't be in control of the volume to your ears. a better setup would be: - Guitar> GT8> Amp > mic the amp > Mixer > headphone out to your ears. (or AUX out to your ears) Then you can control the volume to your ears AND the tone from the amp will be MUCH MUCH better (Assuming its an electric guitar). if its acoustic then I would go GT8 into a DI box, and send the XLR out to the mixer and the "link" out from the DI box into the AMP more as a monitor reference. OR you could also mic the amp and that would give you 2 inputs for your guitar into the mixer:)

Hey Carl! This is super cool and I actually have a very similar setup (both with the IEMs and pedal board). I’m just wondering how are you running 4-6 lines from your guitar..? I’m using the RC-300 as well and typically for me I have all guitar sounds going through the Main Outs of the looper (typically tracks 1&2) and then all drum sounds/beatboxing going out the Sub Outs (track 3). So I’m usually running 2 lines. I could make that 4 if I ran Stereo but I don’t. So yeah... what other lines are you running..?
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 5 жыл бұрын
Seth Kaminsky thanks:) you can just either make them stereo (4) or you can pan the outputs of each track to L or R which would effectively give you 1 stereo out and 2 mono out which you can link to stereo. OR you can also DI your guitar prior to the looper so you can use both main and sub outs exclusively for the loop if you want:) hope that helps!

@@carlwockner The Sound Sculpture Switchblade rack units are great for splitting a single input signal, if you're already lugging around a rack and have room for one. You can spend a ton on the 16 output model, or about half on the 8 stereo out model, and simply run TRS-to-dual TS Y-cables out of each one to 16 different targets, and control their volumes directly.

@carlwockner
@carlwockner 4 жыл бұрын
absolutely mate. Technically you should use a pre-amp which will give you the correct volume for headphones (which the wireless stuff has built in) BUT if you plug your IEM's using an adapter plug, you should be able to plug them directly out from any AUX send. You will just need to turn it up so you can hear it. It won't be the best option, but it would work at a pinch. Alternatively - you could plug your IEMs directly out of the headphone output. If you need the Main Speakers, then you could just link AUX 1 & 2 as a stereo pair then run the MAIN LR speakers out of the AUX 1, 2 - send so that you can use the headphone preamp the console has dedicated to the main mix. :) hope that helps

3:22 so if you have a band of (say) 6 people, and they all use those Shure IEMs, would you have to stack 6 of those Shure transmitter/receiver boxes together? I'm guessing that's gonna take a lot of space?
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 5 жыл бұрын
aussietomj actually no, the cool thing is they are rack mountable side by side so it would only take up 3 rack units - but that was if everyone was running in stereo. Most diy bands run most of their members IEMs in mono - which means using 1 transmitter for 2 people (all you need is an additional belt pack) almost all IEM transmitters can work in either mono or stereo. So in you case, you would only need 3 units minimum. But I would suggest 4, then 2 or your band can run stereo (keys or guitar) if they are actually running stereo FX. And also you would have a backup unit where everyone could run in mono just in case a plane crashes into your rack and only breaks 1 single transmitter. 😎

Hey Carl. Thanks for the rundown. Just wondering if you could expand a little about the power conditioner in this setup. All the Furman conditioners I have found have American plugs with optional adapters for Aus. Is that what you have going on in the back? Or is there a simpler answer for usage? Hope to hear from you! Cheers. \m/

Hey Mate, most power conditioners will have the appropriate cable and plug for the country it is purchased in. This one has a USA plug, I have other power conditioners in Australia that have an Australian plug etc. MOST (not all but most - especially new ones) are variable power level input, meaning you can simply use an adapter for each country and it will adjust the input power range from 100-250volts as necessary. You will just need to check the equipment you plug into it can handle the same if you travel between countries. I hope that helps

Very helpful tips - thanks! So how do you mitigate the danger of getting feedback and destroying your ears before you can manage to yank the IEMs out? In a pro set-up with all IEMs, no prob. But what us more hobbyesque bands who have a mix of IEMs - e.g. just for the singers - and normal wedges? And of course, even in pure IEM set-ups there is a danger of somebody‘s cable suddenly pulling loose and cause a grounds hum or a huge pop. Or a mic stand can get tipped over and blast everyone‘s ears when it hits the floor. So do you have any limiter or other hearing protection in place?
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Scott! Feedback is usually very rare if not almost impossible to get the more IEM's you are using - since each person in the band who has a set eliminates THAT persons stage noise from a wedge, which in turn reduces stage volume and the need for a loud wedge > getting feedback. In my experience in using IEMS, ALL of which you said (except the high end feedback) has happened to me on occasion - almost always in soundcheck, which is specifically the place to attack those problems. Also something to note is when you reduce stage volume - even just a little, MOST feedback would be in the mid's or the lows, which is more of a slow progressive feedback, and even that is still rare. As for the mic, cable tripping etc.. thats another story and would be much more chaotic if you didn't have IEM's especially with the "backyard garage band" style audio quality you mentioned above - as those things would almost certainly give feedback when the mic hits the floor right next to the wedge or kick mic etc.. All that aside however, yes it is certainly possible to add a limiter on your IEM sends, and is often doable within the transmitter and receiver if you are wireless. I personally dont like what it does to tone, and even on the extremely rare occurrences where I DID get feedback in my IEMS (though the source was from someones wedge on the stage) It wasn't deafening or a problem other then the fact it sounded horrible. hope that helps mate! good luck!

Carl Wockner A huge belated THANK YOU for your ultra-valuable feedback on feedback. ;-) Very helpful! Since I‘m a tone freak, your experience with using limiters in the chain has turned me off on that option. Can‘t stand losing tone. But I‘m still not sure I‘ll take the plunge to go in-ear because we have often encountered sudden in-gig feedback (both bass and high treble) caused by the speakers being too close to us, as is unavoidable in some venues. Our Mackies usually sit about a meter in front of us, and not too far off to the sides. So sometimes - despite a good soundcheck in an empty room - we later get all kinds of issues, and they often persist even when we turn the wedges down to zero. We‘re just not professional enough to get the job down better, and the venues can be small and acoustically tricky (like beer tents). Perhaps we‘ll instead go the route of getting a column system to kill two birds with one stone, i.e. FOH and monitoring (by placing them slightly behind us). But anyhow, if we do go the IEM route then your input will help us. :-)

Thanks mate:) yeah most wireless systems have simple output limiters, mostly just to avoid spikes etc... although I would absolutely recommend using an in board limiter plugin on the aux output. Especially considering you can adjust much more with it, and it sounds much better. Im glad you brought this stuff up - I guess in hindsight I could have spent some time speaking about the audio and mix elements of an IEM rig, but the forsight of this video was just to explain what it is and how to plug it all in. That info seems pretty limited online for sure.

Hey Carl, how do you eq what you have going through the ears in your set up? I was gifted a fairly decent pair of wired iem's but I'm currently bypassing the preamp by running it direct into my Headrush looper board. It has a very flat eq and sounds alright for the vocal but my guitar sounds thin on the low to low end mids. As is it sounds better without them in my ears because I can hear that thump coming through the PA.
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 4 жыл бұрын
hey mate! I don't have any EQ on my IEM's but that said, I have a set of custom mold's. Usually anything midrange to high end will cover more of the Frequency spectrum - the cheaper ears will sound good with music playback but for live they will either cheaply exaggerate the bass and high freq's or will not go much lower than 50hz. A lot of guitarist who like the "stage warmth" feel of an amp hitting them in the back of their knees will use IEM's but also will have a wedge at their feet facing them with only their guitar signal. that way they can feel it a little better. Same deal with Drums and Bass - most of them will have a sub setup next to them for reference along with the IEM's. 2ndly - I would ensure your signal sounds great out the Main PA, then just adjust the IEM EQ to suit your personal taste.

Hey mate, I use the Shure GLXD16 setup for most stages. If it’s a massive stage I usually hire a high end model, but the GLXD16 is killer for most applications. It also runs on 2.4gHz not a UHF so it works worldwide easy:)

Hi Carl , thanks for the video 🤗 Need to know some info , we r planing to buy a wireless in ear monitor system for our music band , we have 5 people in our band , how is it possible to do , basically I want to here my vocal and guitar from my in ear monitor and the bass player wants there bass guitar sound and the keyboardist want there music , so how to split all those individual from the main monitor system and plz recommend a good monitor system for us ! Thanks , much appreciate
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, thanks for the comment. Basically you set up everything just like you're setting up wedges / foldback speakers - except instead of plugging in the speakers, you plug in your In ear monitors. Either Wired or Wireless. There is a lot to cover based on your question so first I would start with looking at your mixer and how to send different mixes to each band member first. Once you learn that, then look at In Ear Setup options :) Good luck!

Good stuff Carl, quick question...could you just connect the In ear monitor system straight to the front of house?
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 4 жыл бұрын
absolutely if you like. If you are only using the mixer for your monitors, the mains can act as another stereo send:)

Thank you for the reply :) Just to clarify... So say we’re conducting a Live show with drums, Vocals, Bass and guitar all running through the Front of house.. it will still be okay to connect the wireless in ear monitor system straight to front of house only to be received into the vocalists ears? Cheers
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 4 жыл бұрын
@@link-1825 If you are already sending the mains to FOH then you wont be able to plug in your IEM's but if youre using the mixer purely for IEM's then you wont be utilising the Main LR so you can treat that like an extra, Stereo AUX send.

Hey Do you think this would be a good system (the XR18) to replace an analogue mixer setup at my church ? Use it as the main mixer to run main speakers including subwoofer speakers, all the instruments and wireless in ears?

Hey mate! Yes for sure! If you were using it professionally and for FOH I would consider getting the Midas MR18 (looks and acts the same but has better Preamps etc..) its only a couple hundred more $ and totally worth it. Although if your budget only extends to the XR18 its still well worth it!

Not sure I don't use it anymore. it was $3 haha. U can use literally any $20-30 wifi router. many of them are even small than this. You don't want a rack mountable option as it will take up too much space.

Hello, How can I do the same but use wired headphones instead of wireless ?
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, just literally plug a headphone extension cable into the aux bus. Although for the best results you should use a Headphone Preamp such as a rack mountable headphone preamp, or something like the Rolls PM50s or the Behringer P2

You can use in ear monitors especially doing a one-man looping show but I find it best to just come out of the stereo headphone out because you want to know what it sounds like if you’re mixing your own stuff depending on the venue my only problem with a near monitors is I feel separate from the audience big shows it’s OK but we knew you’re doing intimate Las Vegas shows where being involved with the crowd is super important I find myself not using them
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 5 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, thanks for the comment! Absolutely you need to consider the environment. If youre running your own sound and aren't sure on your master mix, and dont require a seperate mix then Id agree with coming out the master / or headphone out. Although usually reverbs and tones can sound a little different through IEMS than FOH speakers so sometimes its handy to have a seperate mix even if the difference is subtle. That said, if it is a low volume show, a wedge is often fine. I would also highly suggest using an ambient mic with your rig so you can hear the room and be more "part of the audience" it removes the separation sound! :) hope that helps

Isn’t it easier if you have your own engineer to mix on iPad and give the house desk left and right mix. Wouldn’t that save time in a festival situation? I imagine splitting signals would take some time.
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 2 жыл бұрын
If you had your own engineer then you would just run direct to the FOH but this is in a setting that you can control the variables easier. When you cannot just send a main LR.

Thanks for the video! Quick question, how does that wifi router work exactly with venue to venue? Is it a hotspot sorta deal that you add it to your internet plan or something? I'm currently in the process of gathering the products necessary for my bands in ear system and I keep seeing people saying to use it, but not really explaining how it all works. Thanks!
@carlwockner
@carlwockner 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes its a standard router athough no internet connection is required. Simply put - when you get Wifi (for internet at home for example) you pay for your plan. And the company delivers the signal to your DSL port (phone port) in the wall of your address. you then plug in your wifi router to that port and you router simply wirelessly connects between the internet and your device (phone, laptop etc...) in THIS case - your router will connect to your digital mixer (not the internet) and your router will still do its job of the wireless connection between your mixer and your device (iPad/phone/laptop). SOME venues have specific plans that enable them to connect their equipment router into their internet access point ALSO but that won't suit you unless you are only using your router in the 1 location. You don't need a plan or anything for this as you aren't getting internet. All you wish to do is connect your device wirelessly to control your mixer - and the router is the thing to do it.
