You guys are definitely correct that the feelings Rem has toward Subaru is a parallel to the feelings Subaru has toward Emilia. The other thing to keep in mind is that even outside the romantic feelings, Rem is forever grateful to Subaru for getting her out of her own head and move on from her depression. She sees Subaru going through that same thing and wants to help him too. Outside of all the insane plot devices, this entire show needs to be looked at as a giant metaphor for depression and loneliness, and the cast of characters are learning different ways to connect with people (not just romantically) and help each other out.

I hope that scene is adapted well in the anime. I guess it helps that the web novel can be more descriptive, and Tappei isn't limited by an "episode duration" so he can make chapters as long as they need to be.

Credit goes to @MrTimeattacker. Under Autosaves video, he made a brilliant explanation about the "I love Emilia" Scene (It’s really infuriating why so few people still don't recognize the real significance of this): A large portion of the point of this arc was that Emilia did not owe Subaru a relationship because he did so much for her, especially when he does stuff that ends up hurting both of them all while Subaru uses Emilia as an excuse for his horrible behaviour. That's not how real relationships or love works. As an extension of that, Subaru does not owe Rem a relationship for all that she's done for him. He does not have to accept the confession if he does not want to. Once again, obligation is not a good basis for a relationship, and if Subaru does not feel the same way, he just doesn't feel the same way. It's also pretty clear why subaru loves Emilia, even with the anime cutting some Emilia content from the mansion arc. That being said I think the best end to the discussion on the romantic part of this episode is hypothesizing what if subaru said "i Love you too Rem" it would have been an insult to Rem's feeling, It would have been cheap for what subaru's motivations him wanting to do something for her (even though just to satisfy his self-worth up until now) and ruining the earlier development and most importantly choosing rem was EASY way out. It would absolutely be a betrayal of his character, if he had chosen Rem here out of desperation. (There is an If-Story that goes to show what would have happened if he ran away with Rem.) Subaru is OUR definition of depressed, and unfortunately that's not something time alone can fix. However, with the right support system and the courage to reach out your hand even when you don't believe you're worth it... someone suffering from depression can actually go on to be an incredible person, stronger and kinder because of the understanding they've gained. It's really not on the nose like other shows, But a cold dread that creeps up on you. Also, at the end of the day, Both are laughing, and you can't help but betray how you feel about someone.

The way I've always liked to describe the "love confession" aspect of this episode is less as a central point, even though it _seems_ like a large focus of the conversation's final part, and more as one positive tool, among others, that Rem utilizes to try and help Subaru's self-esteem. After all, she says it herself: for every bad thing Subaru can say about himself, she can come up with a counter (which is itself mirrored by Subaru's declaration to Emilia in the final episode). That's not to say her feelings are untrue, or not important and meaningful, obviously; but I think people get bogged down on the question of "who loves who" a bit too much (partly, to be fair, because of how the episode is structured), while misunderstanding that that aspect is ultimately a rather minor part of the discussion. In other words, they miss the forest for the trees. To put it in shorter terms: Rem's goal here isn't to start a romantic relationship. She doesn't care about some date with Subaru - or she would've agreed to his proposal - she wants him back on his feet.

True, Subaru was doing exactly what Rem wanted him to do - chase for his dream, keep going for the future he wanted. Even if she was not the part of that future. This is a sacrifice in it's purest form. However, in the novels it's also clearly stated that his feelings for Rem grew way deeper than he could ignore and pretend it's just friendship. Furthermore, Subaru decided to use the same strategy with Emilia. Giving unconditional love and selfless devotion without asking for anything in return, making your loved one feel the strongest, most special and needed person in the world - just what he felt being next to Rem.

One of my absolute favorite episodes in Re:Zero. The scene with Rem not only felt like I was watching myself in an anime, pouring out all my negative feeling about myself, word for word. But it also introduced me to the idea that people see me differently than I view myself. My positive actions *aren't* just a passing thing that doesn't matter. My negative actions don't define me as a person. I still very much struggle with it, and find it difficult to comprehend people loving and appreciating me, but this scene at least made me aware of this as an idea. The thing that kills me most about the scene is how Rem sympathises, and holds Subaru in such high regard with only the knowledge she has in the singular timeline she has been apart of. She has no actual knowledge of all the pain and suffering he has actually faced in other timelines, and when he talks about things like "it kills you AND me", that comes across as a complete figure of speech, and Subaru being kinda dramatic and mega hard on himself. If you watch the cut videos on YT that show how Return by Death looks to other people, it really becomes clear just how difficult it becomes for characters to see him manage to do the impossible in the most amazing ways, just to suddenly stop and slip into trauma and depression. (Which frankly, is how it feels to suffer from trauma/depression irl sometimes) You can only imagine the overwhelming sympathy Rem would have in a more 'real-life' setting where she has real knowledge of what burdens Subaru has been suffered. This just contributes to the ongoing theme of loneliness that Subaru experiences.

A lot got made of the “I love Emilia” moment when it first aired and in that moment you feel for Rem. But, It’s not that he doesn’t feel anything for Rem. He just felt in that moment telling her anything other than what his original goal was, would be an insult to her and why she was trying so hard to save Subaru. By telling her this which she already knew, she knows now her hero has picked himself back up and regained his resolve to save everyone and not run away. It’s a real turning point for Subaru and his open relationship he forms with Rem as well. A lot of people get confused when Subaru then in the following episodes is falling all over for Rem after having just said he loves Emilia. Feelings can quickly change but Subaru already harbored strong feelings for Rem. they only intensified even more in this episode and beyond to where he holds only Rem and Emilia in his heart for people he truly loves. It’s a beautiful episode and it is one of my favorite anime episodes ever.

Huge respect for the reaction to the infamous line, especially to Ange! It's indeed *good* that he didn't lead her on. The sooner any potential false hope is dispelled, the better. When I first watched it, I was mad at Subaru for being "stubborn" but I was misguided. It wasn't stubbornness, one does not choose whom to love. He's a teenager boy with a crush, and I once was one too. It wasn't as simple as trying to be rational about it.

It's important to note that it's especially easy to root for Rem at this point. A. She's just the sweetest, but also B. She's been shown a lot more than Emila. We really haven't gotten to see Emila all that much to be honest. That all being said, it's good that Subaru didn't put any if's or but's about it. He told Rem that he loves Emila. He's not leading her on or letting her think she has a chance that doesn't exist. I know it's stated you've finished S1, but it's also made clear that even though Subaru loves Emila, he also loves Rem and cherishes her as well, non-romantically. The beginning of S2 is a prime example of that and I won't spoil it. Subaru will go to bat for Rem just as much as Emila to be honest.

Also another important note of subaru.. Subaru is a weak and dumbest character. But his decision, motives , ideology and actions play a major role and impacts the flow of story of the rezero world.

I'm probably the only person who's so infuriated with subaru that i ended up dropping this series after one season. The idea that one person can work so hard to earn the affection of another, but end up losing to someone who has done far less, is one thing I cannot stand about the human condition.

I’m sorry Rem Fans no offense, but ya’ll must love dating psychos that kill you, Subaru has been stanning Emilia since the start of the show & She has yet to hurt or even Kill him, unlike Rem, So the only one I feel bad for here is Subaru. Still love Rem though, but using his trauma as an excuse to make a move on him is kind of despicable, Don’t know why everyone pretends to forget what Rem did in the past ngl.

That's the thing, Subaru explains this in a past episode. Emilia is the only one who treated him well from the get-go. He has the past knowledge of Rem not trusting him, and even killing him, whilst Emilia always treated him kindly, and fairly - and he knows this. It's easy for us to say "Rem best girl" now, but Subaru's perspective is different. He still remembers Emilia being his 'hero' near the beginning of his time in this world, and values her unconditional kindness above all else.

Subaru changed Rem from worse to best girl in this current episode. I don't know which part you are talking about that she is making a move on him but we do know that despite Subaru's offer of living with her for a lifetime, which Rem really likes the idea of that, she knows that it wasn't coming from the Subaru he knows and he loved and that's why she prefers what's best for Subaru and not what's only best for her. It's not that people pretend of what Rem did to Subaru. It's because the show changed our perception towards Rem through Subaru. Subaru already moved on from that past different timeline and loved them. Subaru even explained why Rem and Ram act that way. That's why the show also releases Emilia's story in order to have a more look of Emilia. The reason why people see Rem better than Emilia in this current episode is because when Subaru breaks down in front Emilia like a mad man, Emilia gave up on him (for Subaru's sake) and few episodes later Rem shines brighter when Subaru breaks down.

honestly I don't really get this. Subaru obviously understands both Rems motivations for killing him and that she would never do it again after the forest, which is the whole reason why he trusts her so much now. He's the one who brought up running away with her for his entire life in the first place. Why would he ever do that if she was just "a psycho that kills him"? I'm not trying to say he's wrong and should've chosen Rem, but nothing he does since the forest shows that he has any sort of distrust or harsh feelings for Rem in any capacity. As for Rem using Subarus trauma to make a move on him, I think it's wrong for two reasons. First, Subaru initiated the conversation of running away together, and Rem answered truthfully. I don't really see what the alternative would be. Secondly, Rem straight up told him that Subaru taking up her offer would mean leaving behind the whole reason she loved Subaru in the first place, so in a way, she kinda rejected him before she even confessed. In my opinion, the whole point of this talk was just to get Subaru out of his bad mind, not to make a move on him, otherwise she would've just went along with it from the get-go.

@@Gamed-dd7tj You forget that before the runaway scene, Rem put him to sleep the first witch run, wishing for him to lean on her more, then the second time where we actually saw the purple cloak witches & they kill Subaru again, He goes insane, hugs Rem, & that entire time he was traumatized, Rem was smiling that he was leaning on her more, Honestly Rem has redeemed herself for me towards the end of S1 especially in the Betelgeuse scenes, But I’m sorry Rem Fans literally have nothing that puts Rem over Emilia, or anything that should make them hate Subaru for not choosing someone he was never in love with, Rem fans seem to forget that, Especially When Emilia’s first encounter with a stranger was to help, heal, & save him, Meanwhile Rem’s first encounter with a stranger was to mercilessly kill him because he smelled funny [Exaggeration I know there’s more to that reason relax] and it Took Emilia telling Rem to chill out & that Subaru’s a good person to get her to finally stop killing him, So she didn’t even stop on her own, I understand your points, But Rem fans being mad at this episode is honestly the most immature thing ever, When you know Subaru said who he loves several times & know what has happened before this. Ya’ll be making her character look worse by saying he should’ve picked her or that Subaru wanted to Runaway with her when in reality he was beyond tired of trying to fight his fate & even Rem knew he didn’t love her & it wasn’t out of love.

@@K00300 Rem puts him to sleep because she knows that they will be in danger and that's why she doesn't want Subaru to be at risk. Making someone feel that you are a reliable person is not a bad thing. You are reading things wrong. Rem just saved him. There's no malicious intent from Rem there. If Rem is just really a bad girl, she could've just accept Subaru's offer to ran away but she didn't because it's not coming from the Subaru she loved. No one here is hating Subaru for not choosing Rem. No one here is hating Emilia either. Both are good characters. You are making thing up and readings things wrong. Remember, Rem and Ram had traumatic experience with the witch cult and just so you know the world has traumatic experience with the Witch. Subaru is very suspicious because of his smell of the witch within him and Subaru's actions is so unnatural and suspicious. It's not normal for any person to interact with strangers as if they were close that's why Subaru is highly suspicious. Remember, in this world, killing and dying is so easy. They literally have no seconds to defend themselves if they were caught of guard. In this world, there's no other person like Subaru that's why he became suspicious and he himself describes his own character as rotten. What's funny here is that Subaru explained why Rem and Ram acted that way and here you are still not knowing anything from their world and the show itself!
