Reviews of clothing, boots, and accessories for men, along with style advice and life philosophy. I've been working with my hands for my entire life as a mechanic, tow truck driver, and eventually a licensed electrician. Being a blue collar guy, I look for certain elements in a product: is it durable? Is it high-quality? Will it perform well over its service life? Whether boots, pants, jackets, or tools I believe it's best to buy once and cry once by getting the best you can afford. With so many options these days, choosing the best product can become a difficult decision, but that's where I come in. Helping you stay stylish, rugged, and handsome.
I don't care where it's made as long as it's made well, and allows you to buy less and buy better.

I'm 65 now and I've loved good boots for most of my life . I still work a part time job and wear my Iron Rangers for that. I have a couple pair of Nick's , Falcon Brown and Urban logger to round those out , I really like the arch support. One pair of Thursday Captains in brandy for a nice dressy boot . Years back I was into cowboy boots , had horses at the time so they were functional as well , now I just want a good fitting comfortable boot and the Nick's are as far as I would reach as for cost. Good vid Carl , thanks.

Carl, I have Never thought of myself as a "boot" guy. However since I have started watching your videos I have found my self becoming more and more intrigued by all of these different boots. My favorite so far are the logger types more specifically Nick's builder pro. I about cringed when I saw the price at first but they fit like a glove for your feet. There is literally nothing that these boots can't do. Like them so much I went ahead a bought another pair. I now have a full roughout pair and a more sleeker pair I wear when taking the wife out. Keep these Great videos flowing.

Well Carl...as you know from my emails, I'm a cheap bastard. I bought a pair of "worn one time" Red Wing Chukkas 9215 (retail $330) for $100 on ebay. I sent them to Brian The Bootmaker as soon as I received them for a rebuild (new welt, Role Club half sole, Role Club low stacked heel.) $240 including return shipping. Now, for the price of a new pair of RW 9215, I have a "like new" pair of Role Club-ish looking Chukkas. Basically the same thing you did with your Iron Rangers. They fit better and feel more comfortable than my RW 9216 new and original. My point...there are other creative ways to have great boots without taking out a loan. Great video! I always look forward to your new videos. Thanks!!

Glad you started with Viberg. I absolutely love the look and style of their boots, but I'm certain there are half-the-price alternatives that will do that style full justice and will be just as rugged. Sometimes a company just overcharges, and eventually it catches up with them.

Bought me an early early pair of Thursday Boot Captains....mmmm...was a tad scared when they were a wee kickstarter infant. But, boy...did I get a good pair! Budget win that makes me smile every time I lace em. My cheapazz Danner Jags (1980s throwback hiker, beat to all heck...) feel almost as good as a pair of my custom snake r-toes out of El Paso...sometimes a pair just gets ‘right’ with your piggies, regardless of price point. That pair of Scarpa Eiger full shank mountaineering boots however, oof...purpose built, and purpose used, but did not work for me. Man, I love boots...thought/suggestion: Lucchese for a great pair of cowboy boots to see if you’re ready for customs...

I bought a pair of the Silverado 8” Lumberjack last year after seeing your video. I had the plastic welt replaced with a leather welt because the plastic cracked after about 6 months. The interior plastic toe caps have also broken down - eg. I have to push the toe back into shape from the inside if I collapse it by kneeling, etc. Otherwise, the boots are great. The oil tanned leather is very supple. I have loved the honey Vibram outsoles. I’d definitely consider the 9” Logger if it has a leather welt.

Up until a year ago when I found videos like yours and Rose Anvil I had never thought about buying a boot over $125. If I remember correctly the most expensive was a Bates boot that lasted a little over 5 years and that was probably around 125 but as it was so long ago I do not remember for sure. I did buy a pair of Redwings or at least their cheaper ones called Irish setter and those were on sale around the time I found channels like yours for around 100. The only issue I have it the arch support is higher and they are a bit warm so can not wear them during the summer. I did buy a pair of Rockroosters and boy are those terrible boots. They were around 70 and I had blisters on the back of my heal and I only had them on for like an hour maybe less. Never buying those again. I also bought a pair of Carolina boots that look almost exactly like the Redwing boots I have and they were about the same amount of money, I like them but the same issue as the red wings. Now recently I found a brand I really like but the quality is hit and miss. The band is called Patron and they seem to be good quality at times but like I said hit and miss. They are around 70 and I got 3 of them. 1 is great and still looks new after several weeks of wearing them. The other 2 however have quality issues and seem to be too narrow. Patron has all different styles even like the ones you showed but again it is hit and miss with the quality.

Having owned many (‘90s) Vibergs and a few (‘00s) White’s boots, the Vibergs won on build quality. When I ordered my last pair of Viberg Bobcats, I was told the wait would be double what I expected because of a huge otaku order of multicolored Bobcats. That was when they discovered the value of the hipster market, so my order was cancelled and I bought my first custom White’s. Then White’s was gobbled up and started catering to the Seattle/Portland urban buyers, so I’m not sure where comparative quality stands now. Anyway, I’ve got a pair of custom 350 Cruisers inbound from White’s and should know in a few weeks whether White’s has lost its mojo.

I have a pair of belgrave (cap toe adalaide oxford), abingdon (NST derby in museum calf) and a scott boot. All sizes in UK, the belgrave is in 7.5, the abingdon 8 and the scott boot in 9. Do a large amount of research. That said the materials are top grade. My Scott boots have enough wear on them that the toplifts have been changed but there is almost no visible creasing on the vamp. It's also about _with whom_ you are spending your money. Who are you supporting and do you value their time, craft, and effort? That one guy over in small town America or Japan or...you name it It's hard to argue with the quality and construction of a Grant Stone in comparison to others at half the price----yes, Viberg, that means you of course. Viberg is not one guy but it's really really a small company. Once we take away impressions of exclusivity (warranted or otherwise), there is an economics and a politics of consumer goods. There is the issue of supporting artisan craft and what that means. Touchy subject, dangerous real estate but it's often the reason things are cheaper---but sometimes no less the product. Truth to tell, I think that if you're not conflicted about this, maybe you should be, some. It's not just boots, as you well know.

Ebay is also an amazing option if your looking for quality boots for cheap. Usually $100-$200 cheaper than buying straight from any brand and most times they've only been worn once... Also, if your looking for a cheap alternative to red wing mocs, they sell Herman Survivor moc toes on Walmart's website for $60!

Have you seen the adtec logger that comes in around 70 dollars? I would wager you get what you pay for, but they look real good. Compared to the chippewa. The adtec actually looks better. I'm picking up some Nick's once I'm through the Vermont heating season. Unfortunately I destroyed my chippewas and am stuck wearing an old pair. I was thinking of picking up a pair of these to get me through till March or April. I can't drop 5 bills on boots. When I'm filling my 🛢 tank every month and need to keep my cash reserves up. Just in case my furnace shits the bed when it's thirty below zero.

I've owned Vibergs for almost 10 years now. I've had both my pairs resoled. I think where Viberg wins is their choices of lasts. I've never seen anyone put so much effort into providing last options as Brett Viberg. The Vibergs you showed in the beginning also have Shinki horsehide, which adds a lot to the cost. And actually that's another cool thing about Viberg; the options of leather. I also own RW GT and RW Iron Rangers. Both are great boots but quality is not on par with Viberg (not expected to be) and they are also not as comfortable. My 2 cents.

Just bought a pair of Vibergs, how do they compare to Wolverine 1000 Mile for a casual boot?
@iKone911
@iKone911 2 жыл бұрын
@@apilkey I've never owned the Wolverine but have had Red Wings, which are about the same level of quality (about). Vibergs are quite a step up in construction and quality. They don't use cork for example but thicker more layers of leather for the sole. Is it worth almost twice the price? That's up to the individual. For me it is.
@apilkey
@apilkey 2 жыл бұрын
@@iKone911 Thanks I’ve owned both the Red Wings and Wolverine and definitely preferred the looks of the Wolverines for a casual boot. Plus everyone has Red Wings and they’re super common where I’m at so the Wolverines were more unique. The 1000 mille Cap Toe isn’t sold in Canada and it’s like $1,000 to order online and try and get shipped so I figured I’d go with Viberg this time as it’s around the same price for me. I should be getting them in the mail next week so looking forward to them hopefully they fit as I didn’t go with the custom fit option.
@iKone911
@iKone911 2 жыл бұрын
@@apilkey You made the right choice. At that price it's a no brainer (not to go with Wolverine). Here in the US it's much cheaper so more of a decision. Viberg is higher quality anyway and when it's time to rebuild you won't be shipping to the US.

Curious how the Thursday Vanguards you got a few years ago have held up.... I just put in an order for some and there's no going back, but I am curious how well they stand the test of time. Does the leather hold up? How is the poron insole? Etc. I got three years of walking out of my Iron Rangers, I'm hoping for similar life out of these.

Interesting that Wolverine claims their 1000 Mile boots are made in the USA. Either that is inaccurate, or another US based boot company is making them. Wolverine sold their last US factory over a year ago (to Original SWAT). I wonder who is making their 1000 Miles now!

A little off topic but on the Kreosote boots he puts a unique looking outsole. I've tried finding it online but can't make out the brand. What is the outsole called? And is it that much better than vibram outsoles or is it partially for looks?

Tried them all, and nothing for me, nothing, holds and secures my feet like a Viberg boot or comes close to the solid construction they offer. I can walk all day, my feel always feel completely supported, and always hate taking them off as they have such great support all around. While they are expensive, for me, they are worth every penny. Only other boots I own that are for a little more dressier situation are Alden's, another great boot in my opinion.

You about as close to a workbook expert as I know of. Therefore, can you recommend a workbook for my situation? My feet are average, nothing weird going on, I work at Home Depot on a concrete floor with much standing and walking. I currently wear a Wolverine pigskin with a lug sole and I’m pretty happy with them. My orthotics fit well in them and all. They have lots of miles on them and I need a supplemental pair to switch off with. Any help and suggestion is appreciated. Love the vids.
@CarlMurawski
@CarlMurawski 3 жыл бұрын
Sure man, I've worked in a lot of buildings with concrete floors as an electrician and you'll be best served by a boot with soft soles. Ideally a wedge sole so you can distribute the pressure across your entire footbed. Concrete is so unforgiving that it can be murder on your knees, hips, etc. The Vibram wedge is awesome, but so are the Christy wedge boots from Red Wing or Thorogood. I believe Danner makes a Bull Run with a wedge sole too. If thats just not an option for you, I'd look at the honey Vibram soles. They're softer but keep the 100 lug design for traction and a more traditional look.

I was trying to dig up some comparable options but all I really came up with was the Viberg 310 last. That’s the only boot which even looks close but it’s still too expensive IMO. It’s just impossible unless you go vintage and get really lucky to find that squared-toe service boot look that Kreosote is known for.
