Yeah I didn’t realize that till now and yes it may have been business but it was also personal. Technically one could argue that Carlo beating his wife the daughter of Vito was bad for business cause it could show to the other families that you can’t maintain balance in your own family and that can speak volumes to everyone else around you .
@howlingdin93326 жыл бұрын
When deciding who would be the one to kill Carlo, Clemenza probably volunteered.
@Cha0sLord936 жыл бұрын
I think we can agree for Michael this was business and for Clemenza it was personal, simply because Sonny was the item of business for both Corleones and Barzinis- Barzini wanted him gone and the Corleones had to control him from being a loose cannon.. Clemenza put Carlo to bed in the most violent way possible.. Only Luca Brasi saw the razor edge of a pianowire/cheesecutter, if guns aren't involved then the person doing it gets to decide how long the victim lives for while he strangles them, meaning you get to decide how long they get to live.. Clemenza went straight to business.. Meanwhile Luca Brasi actually put up a valiant fight, but his death was simply business because the Tattaglias didn't want a fearsome enforcer going to work on them if they hit the Don

There was a great scene in the books when Carlo was internally thinking that he should rightly have a greater place in the family, even be head of it. He mentally goes through every member of the family and thought about how he could defeat any of them in a one on one fight (except Sonny who gave him pause because they were similarly built, but he still thought at the end of the day he could probably beat Sonny). It gives a great window into Carlo. He didn't get it. He was a wannabe muscle without two braincells to rub together. He thinks Sonny was only being groomed to run the family because Sonny was the best muscle. Even before setting Sonny up, he beat Connie because it felt good to him to brag to the neighborhood boys that he could slap the Corleone daughter around without repercussion. He didn't even consider Michael except that he was sure he could beat Michael in a one on one fight. He was just a thug.

No one seems to notice how genius was Michael and the family in this scene, they set up a perfect psychological trap. First Michael offers him a drink (to make him more susceptible to speak), then giving Carlo the plane ticket to make it really feel like nothing is gonna happen with him, so he feels calm, but also because if Carlo didn't complain about the plane ticket, it would be another positive that he set up Sonny. If he didn't have anything to do with it, his first reaction would be "No, no, I don't wanna go anywhere, I have nothing to do with it Michael, you got the wrong person".
@thelawofdivineoneness4583 жыл бұрын
I noticed it for sure. The airlines tickets just showed the genius of Michael. They were just a ruse to get Carlo to believe he wasn't going to get whacked. Same with offering him a drink to clam his nerves a bit and make him more susceptible to speak just as you pointed out. Most people would think "Well if he's offering me a drink and giving me airline tickets then maybe he really won't make his sister a widow." Michael just wanted the confession before he killed Carlo and that's what he got.

I love the "Get out of my sight" when Carlo tries to apologize. It puts the bow on the lie that Carlo would make it out okay. It's like Michael is saying "I'm letting you off now, but doing so is physically painful. Leave before I change my mind." Makes it more convincing to Carlo that he could live through it.

Part of what makes Michael Corelone such a convincing liar and manipulator is the gestures he makes. Despite giving Carlo a cold dead stare everything he says sounds completely rational. Why would he buy someone a ticket and why would he be Godfather to his child if he was going to kill him ? Then there's the part where Carlo tries to hug him and Michael dismisses him immediately. It's the type of response you'd expect from someone who wasn't going to kill him . It's the behaviour you'd expect someone who really wanted Carlo dead but ultimately bit their lip against their better judgement and resented themselves for doing it . It makes the lie even more believable.

The scene is pure genius, and superbly acted by Al Pacino ... his calmness in getting the truth out of Carlo is amazing (since he probably wanted to strangle him right there) ... but first, he needed to find out which family was responsible for Sonny's assassination. He reassures Carlo that he wouldn't make his sister a widow, and his punishment was to move to Vegas. Pure genius. This made Carlo at ease enough to fess up. Then, once the truth was divulged , Michael was then 100% sure it was Carlo, found out it was Brazzini behind it, and could then whack Carlo with no doubts. One of the best scenes in the movie

Spellbinding scene. How lighting was used to give a contrast of highlights with deep shadows, especially on Michael's face. This is to metaphorically show that there is no gray area in the mafia. Things are black and white. Also to show the two sides of Michael's personality: the calm cool and collected side and his ruthless side. And then, to top it off, As Carlo is walking to the car, we hear crows in the background. Crows are a symbol of death. Marvelous...

I loved the fact that it was Clemenza who took out Carlo. In my “Godfather theory”, Capos are not usually tasked to do hits unless there was an exceptional circumstance. So to me, Clemenza personally asked Micheal to do this as Sonny was his Godson, and it was his way of avenging Carlo’s betrayal of his Godson.

This is my favorite scene in the movie. The scene where Michael officially becomes the new Don. I have seen this movie many times and this scene always stuns me. I still say Pacino gives the best performance of his celebrated career in this movie. This scene alone should have won him the Academy Award (I still can't believe he did not win.). To think that Paramount did not want Coppola to cast Pacino in this role (They actually wanted Burt Reynolds! With all due respect, what the hell was Paramount thinking!). Thank you Francis for sticking to your guns and saying you could only cast Pacino in this role. This role was meant for Al Pacino. Nobody else could have come even close to playing this as well as he did.

For me, Pacino should have won the Oscar for Godfather 3, here the Oscar went to Marlon. Burt, well maybe he would have played a great role. Burt is related to comedy, it is not known how Michael would have been. There's a Burt movie called Malone, where he plays a role similar to Michael Corleone, calm, cold, professional assassin. Also, Burt was considered to be John Maclane, Han Solo.
