One can see the duet (Bonney/von Otter) here on YT taken from the DVD and one notices that Bonney is very preoccupied with the smelling the rose at that moment (7:29) and probably got out of beat because of that - although I must admit that there does not seem to be a discrepancy between oboe and Sophie on that video - this performance we see of Kleiber here may have been another performance to the DVD release after all. It's nevertheless fascinating to watch him (and I am not even a musician :)

I think she starts too soon... But by 8:00 we observe his devotion for the solo voice.... and his approval smile, so deeply grateful

Does he conduct the whole opera from memory? Americans would say "awesome"! - but this really IS awesome!

Acacia Bloom The score would get in his way - he didn't need it. He conducted organically, not by memory, but by heart. I know first hand, having played 1st violin in the Met orchestra when he conducted 7 sublime performances with us. Lucky us, lucky me!

By 1994 he had conducted Rosenkavalier hundreds of times. So he probably knew it from memory :)

I've been repeating 7:29 moment and wonder what went wrong? What could have been done better?

The soprano has (fourth beat) equal triplets; the oboe (doubling at the octave) has a triplet of dotted eighth, sixteenth, eighth. The soprano lifted before the 4th beat, the oboe went on in time, the soprano then matched the dotted rhythm of the oboe. Such a little thing. But listen how carefully the clarinets, bassoons, and first vlns listen and match Sophie's rhythm 11 bars later (8:32); Kleiber barely conducts and rewards everyone with that smile.
